AirAsia X Newly Refurbished A340...

Sun Apr 25, 2010 5:22 pm

I was just wondering if anyone has flown Air Asia X's newly configured A340-300's on the STN to KUL route, and how it was?

I cannot find anything else regarding the newly refurbished aircrafts on here...

I notice they have begun to rollout the new refurbished cabin, unsurprisingly but disappointingly it will have a 3-3-3 abreast config in economy, with a 16.5 inch seat width and 32 inch seat pitch. Capacity on the aircraft will increase from 286 (J-30 & Y-256) to 327 (J-18 & Y-309).

I was hoping deep down that the airline may retain the 2-4-2 config on the A340's, due to the 13.5hr flight time on the STN-KUL route. I need to keep reminding myself in the back of my mind they are a LCC!

The "premium seats" seem like they will be lay flat, and unlike traditional airlines the premium cabin will be in the middle of the aircraft.

Unlike the A330's that were first delivered, the seats will be of the traditional recline type and will not slide forward to recline, the airline has responded to compalints that the A330 black seats were too hard, uncomfy and when reclined knees were knocking up against the seat infront. Also AVOD PTV's are not being installed, due to the high costs and weight issues.

All existing A330's in the fleet with the old black seats will have these replaced with the new traditional recline seats and PTV removed. It also seems they will be removing USB and power points too from Economy.

I got the information from the below blog and it would seem from Wikipedia the first A340-300 is now flying:

Why put it in the middle of the a/c? Any reasons?

Also, it seems like they are removing PTVs from the whole plane? Please no! I'd love to fly Business Class at a low price still, but without PTV is such a torture!
One day I will fly around the world!

This is only on the A340-300's and I think this is due to the airline using the 2nd door on the aircraft for boarding, it provides quickest boarding for these passengers on to the aircraft...

It does seem weird you will have Economy in front and behind the Premium cabin.

according to the blog above, its also to do with the number of pax seated across the plane, to ensure that the numbers are distributed evenly between the doors in an exacuation. I suppose because of the high density 3-3-3 seating in "y" if they were all at the back of the plane they would just not fit out the doors, or onto a raft in an emergency evenly if it had a traditional layout.
