The Least Comfortable Seats

Sun May 02, 2010 5:34 am

Which seat configuration is the least comfortable, 8-abreast in a 767, 9-abreast in an A330, or 10-abreast in a 777 (assuming the seat cushions are similar and the seat-pitches are the same)?

I've never experienced any of the configurations you mentioned, but how about 6 wide in a BAe-146/Avroliner? Not fun at all, even with an empty middle seat.

I've flown on an A310 with a 3-3-3 configuration. Brutal to say the least, even if it was only a 3 hour flight. Airline was Air Transat.

Ten-abreast in a 777 may not be the one because the configuration is used by major airlines like Emirates, KLM, and Air France. On the other hand, the others are only used by charter airlines and LCCs (like AirAsia X).

Of those the only I've had the pleasure of experiencing is 8 in the 767, and that was not much fun.

I'm guessing the 2-5-2 seating in a 777. Just thinking of it makes me feel claustrophobic.

Thomsonfly's 767-200s in 2-4-2 configuration and a 30 inch pitch were not nice.

SATA's A310-300 in 9 abreast config was also a bit claustrophobic if you had the window seat.

The Kavminvodyavia Tu-154 I flew recently had the tightest legroom ever. My legs were jammed against the seat infront, not much more than the minimum 26 inch legroom. 3-3 configuration, but something like 32 rows, or maybe more in the Tupolev.

J31/J32s are also a bit tight on the legs.

Just because major airlines use such config doesn't mean it's not comfortable. 10 abreast on a 777 is dreadful anyway.

Least comfortable for me have been charter airlines (Airtours, Air 2000, Thomas Cook and First Choice). 28" seat pitch - I'm only 5'10 and I can't sit with my legs in front of me. Physically impossible. Probably just as well I can't afford to go abroad this year

The absolute worst seat I have been in is the front row of JL Y+, that seat was plain uncamfotable.

I had the unfortunate experience of having to sit in a middle seat of a 6 abreast RJ85 between two strangers on a 2+ hour flight once. Needless to say I couldn't get off that plane fast enough. I try to avoid these aircraft from now on, they make FR's 738's seem spacious and roomy.

For me, it would be NW's A319/320 and DC-9 seats. Those seats were hard as a rock w/very little padding especially towards the top.

Close second... CO's seats on the 737. It was a little too firm for me.

The seats IMHO almost mandate me to bring a supplemental pillow along.

Anything that's not Y+ or F on United...

But seriously, 2-5-2 on anything is awful.

2-5-2 is fine if your an isle or window, otherwise I would agree. Had my best TATL on a AA 777, ihad an isle by a window seat, perks of an isle and I could see out the window.

Ill second that, flew the CRJ 200 with SAS and I couldn't beleive how cramped it was, and im only 185CM

Also Corsair 747-400 Had VERY tight seating (28"), WOW that was the worst 13 hours of flying EVER!!!

Last one was City Jet (AF) Avro Bae 146 3+3, Wow I was so PISSED As I payed for the 2 exit seats on the last row for me and my Fiance, and Online it showed a 3+2 with an exit row in the back config, but it was the 3+3 when we got onboard and NO exit! Man I was pissed off!

Most generous in Y, were SQ 777-200ER 3+3+3 Config and Also SAS A321 and I also Like the seat pitch on SAS mad dogs  Smile
