Upgrading On Hawaiian Airlines

Mon May 10, 2010 12:16 am

I'm taking my dad to Hawaii for his birthday next week and wanted to do something special since my mom actually passed away the day after his birthday last year so it wasn't the best time. I want to do something special like upgrade us to first class, does anyone know how many points Hawaiian requires or if they allow you to pay for an upgrade at check in or something like that?

I don't know how many point it takes, but we do offer upgrades at check-in and at the gate if available. You can do it for $ too.

Ok thanks. Do you know if there is a set cost or does it vary by flight?

The last time my wife and I did this on Hawaiian it was $250 per person to upgrade at time of check-in (or at the gate). That was a couple of years ago. At the time it was a set fee of $250 on flights between Hawaii and the U.S. mainland.

As a frequent HA traveler, I can chime in....

Currently, it will be approximately $349 to upgrade for flights between US mainland destinations and HNL for non-elite passengers.

For Pualani Platinum elite passengers which is the highest level, it is about $225. And, for Pualani Gold elite passengers, it is about $275.

All of the above upgrade rates are only available at check in at the counter or online (space available of course). You can get a confirmed upgrade, but I think it is about $600 one way per person (don't quote me on this though).

Whether or not these rates are worth the upgrade is personal preference. Speaking only for myself, it is not (and I fly HA regularly and am a very loyal customer). The F cabin is pretty tight and the seats are standard business class seats with no lie flat...only leg and footrests. I get better legroom in their exit rows believe it or not.

The food in F class is excellent. However, HA is now (or soon will be) the ONLY US carrier that offers a complimentary meal service that is very good for Y class. There is also an upgrade meal option which I honestly believes rivals F class food in other domestic carriers.

What I do is just get an exit row at check-in at the counter and go for the upgraded meal rather than pay the $275 to upgrade as I am a Pualani Gold member...oh and hope that HAL is flying the plane  Smile

Thanks for the info. And I'll stick my head in the cockpit and find out, I want to be a pilot and can't think of anything better than flying a 767 between hawaii and California!
