Construction Near SAN Causes Problems For Pax

First of all, Mods...sorry if this would be more appropriate for the non-av forum, but I wanted to share here because this had a large impact on travel at SAN today.

This story really upsets me. Not only was I almost late to work at 7am this morning, but passengers had a miserable time trying to get to the airport all day long. SAN is already a pain to get to because there is no direct freeway access and there is really just one way in and out. What really has me upset is that this was planned construction, on a typical busy Sunday of all days, and no one at the airport was given a heads up! How can they justify messing with the main route to the airport without warning like that?! So many people missed their flights. Traffic was so bad, I heard of passengers getting out of their cars and walking/running a good mile or so to the terminals! The timing of this planned work and the lack of communication really has me upset about it.

Anyway, I just wanted to rant about it and see if anyone was affected by this ugly situation.  grumpy

Come in the back way: Rosecrans --> Harbor and come in from the north, or take the 8 freeway to Nimitz to Harbor. That's how I usually do it since that whole Grape/Harbor/Hawthorne/Laurel/Pacific Hwy area is a nightmare.

Is this an ongoing construction project or just a one time thing? The article makes it seem like it might be an ongoing thing...I'll have to leave some extra time to get a rental car back if this is an ongoing project.

Well yeah, there is a back way and it's a route I would only take if I know in advance to avoid the main route. That's the problem. There was no warning. It's also a route that someone only with some knowledge of the area would take. The main route to the airport, the one affected today, is the one guided by road signs from the freeway.

It has been part of an ongoing project, but until today it has been work carried out overnight. Why they chose to do major work during an entire Sunday, I have no idea.

Sounds like a mess. San Diego is a great airport to fly in/out of because of the views, both from the air and upon exiting the terminal area and driving along the water...but it certainly can be a pain! More than once it has taken 10+ minutes to get from the airport down Harbor to the 5, and then less to make it the bulk of my journey up to the Qualcomm area...

That's my route too these days...otherwise it's not worth it, unless it's really early in the morning.

Got stuck in this traffic yesterday going to the airport. Left the hotel at 1115 (staying at the Anduz in the Gaslamp area) - my friend was trying to grab the 1205p flight; he ended up taking the 1230p flight via LAX instead. I know on my SAN-ORD flight, my seatmate in First was a last minute upgrade since the original person must have been stuck in the traffic and didn't make it to the airport on time.

Was actually quite nice - does help that my friend is a Hyatt Diamond member - I'd stay there again in a heartbeat.
