How To Connect Through Amsterdam Or Detroit?

Sun May 23, 2010 3:16 pm

Hi guys, I need your help.

My fiancee lives in the UK, I just spent two months with her, and in July she's coming to America to visit me. The problem is, she's never connected through a major airport before and I havent the funds to fly to England and pick her up, I can make it as far as Detroit but thats it. So, she'll be on her own connecting through Amsterdam, and going through U.S. Customs at Detroit.

I plan to pick her up after she has cleared customs and check her back in, and then we will fly together for the remainder of our journey. But I need advice on how to get her to the point of meeting me safely.

So, firstly. She's taking a KLM Cityhopper flight from NCL-AMS, where she will then connect with a DL A330 AMS-DTW.

She has a two hour connection in AMS. What will she need to do? Does she go through Amsterdam customs? Or does she bypass customs and continue on to her connecting flight? If so, how does she bypass customs, and how does she find the gate for her connection? I did a bit of searching and it appears that DL serves almost all of Amsterdam's concourses, so I have no idea where to guide her or what to tell her, having not been through that airport myself before and not knowing how they do it in that country.

Secondly, after she lands in Detroit, I believe she will be herded directly to customs and turn in her landing card as per usual for an American airport. Will she have any trouble with the fact that I bought the ticket for her? Where will she go from Customs there? I assume to go check in her bag again, that's how they do it at ATL. Is this correct?

Know of a good meeting spot in DTW that's near the exit from customs?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

As an aside, on the way back to England, she flies SLC-ORD-AMS-NCL. What will she go through at ORD for customs? Will it work any differently through AMS on her way back to england?

I can tell you about DTW. When you exit the plane you go down a long corridor/tunnel and then wait for your bags. You and your bags then proceed directly to the CBP station, where she may or may not be chosen for a secondary screening. In either event, next step is clearing the TSA checkpoint and up the escalator to the middle of Terminal A. Find your flight on the wall monitor and go to the gate. There is a food court in that area as well.

...So Delta's flight from AMS generally arrives at Terminal A?

EDIT: Asked a question about the north terminal, just answered it myself.

Everything mainline arrives at Terminal A. Delta Connection flights arrive and depart form Terminals B and C. SLC should be all mainline as it is a hub to hub flight. All Delta/Skyteam flights are at the McNamara Terminal, also f/k/a/ The Northwest WorldGateway at Detroit.

Connecting in Amsterdam is easy, especially as she will be conencting non-Schengen to non-Schengen.
She will arrive probably from a bus gate, she will go through doors and up into the main terminal. In front of her will be a big screen with all flights posted - she finds the Detroit flight and notes the gate number. There are maps posted on all the walls, in the KLM inflight magazine, and signs for the different piers. They are all in one big terminal. There are also Transfer Desks dotted about (if I recall correctly, there is one directly opposite where the bus gates arrive). If she is uncomfortable finding the gate herself, someone there will give her directions. There is no security at this point. Then she goes to the gate, where there is a security checkpoint leading into a small holding area - only go into here once she's done everything she needs to in the terminal (bathrooms, shopping, food...). From here the only way to proceed is onto the aircraft directly.

She will probably arrive in the middle of the E pier, and depart from the F pier - though this can change.

Hope this helps!

Thank you for that AMS advice. So how will it work on her return? Coming from Chicago, and connecting through AMS. She only has a one hour connection to her KLM flight.

Also, the KLM plane is a 738. So does this mean she will go down some airstairs and then board a bus?

If the KL flight is a 738, it will probably use an airbridge directly - it's mostly the Fokkers that are bus gates.
On her return from Chicago it will work exactly the same. If her AMS-NCL flight is using an airbridge gate, then there is the same security-at-gate system with a holding pen. If it is a bus gate, the bus gate area is well signed downstairs in the E pier - there is one security check there with multiple bus gates, so a bigger holding area. There are also toilets and vending machines in this bigger area.
If her flight is delayed, go straight to the Trasnfer Desk and they will re-book her onto the next available flight.

Here's a trip report I wrote a few months ago. There's a brief description of our 2 connections in AMS, though we had a baby with us!

There is no such thing as Amsterdam Customs, only Dutch (/Netherlands) Customs, and no, she will not pass them or immigration.

Don't be fooled my the million codeshare flights (it even gets to me...), virtually all Delta flights operate from the E-gates.

Well, I meant to say customs at Amsterdam. I meant no disrespect.

That is very helpful info, thank you!
