Sat May 29, 2010 12:57 am

OK lots of Airline geeks smarter than me so lets find out where the Top Ten airline Hubs are! Heres my take:

ATL: DAL
ORD: UAL
DFW: AA
IAH: CO
CLT: US
EWR: CO
ORD: AA
MSP: DAL
DEN: UAL
PHX: US

It doesn't have to be a mystery:

http://www.flightstats.com/go/Home/home.do?

The order including regionals is:

DL-ATL
AA-DFW
CO-IAH
US-CLT
UA-ORD
DL-DTW

I am certain those are the top six hubs in that order as they are the only ones with over 500 flights a day. After those six, AA-ORD, DL-MSP, AA-MIA, and CO-EWR are the next four though I don't know the order. After those four, UA-DEN, UA-SFO, US-PHL, and US-PHX would be next.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, I don't know why but everyone always thinks UA at ORD is a lot bigger then it actually is. DFW has over 450 mainline AA flights compared to just over 200 mainline UA flights at ORD.

That's what I thought. US at CLT, CO at IAH, and AA at DFW are both bigger than UA at ORD. As for the rest, I thought US had more flights out of PHL than CO has out of EWR.

500?...., no way. Maybe 210.

For the 12 months ending March 2010 B6 handled 11.6 million passengers through JFK, for the same time period CO handled 24 million through EWR.

jetBlue has around 170 flights at max on peak days. DL has the largest slot profile at JFK, in fact, with over 200.

That's as a result of the runway closure at JFK, which has reduced B6 and AA's peak flights as well. Last summer DL and DL Connection were running around 210 daily flights from JFK.

I'll take you word for it I've never seen DLs operation above 200 at JFK but its right around there.

Well DL mainline is currently running 102 peak day departures from JFK, whereas DL Connection used to routinely have over 100 daily flights. With the slot reduction DL pulled many DL Connection flights and has increased mainline flights. Once the runway reopens many of the DL Connection flights should return.

I'm quite sure DFW has alot more than that. For me having never been to CLT, it's hard to believe CLT is 4th. I'll have to swing by there sometime to see just how big their hub operation is.

Actually it's less then that AA is flying 405 mainline flights out of DFW today the rest is Eagle/Executive with 300 flights today....I'm sure its higher during the summer.

Please visit flightstats.com and look at airline scorecard, which lists the daily flights for the ten largest cities in the network. This summer AA will be running roughly 480 mainline flights daily at DFW. And CLT is indeed the fourth largest airline hub in the US.

Airline's schedules are heavily reduced on Saturdays and Tuesdays as compared with other days of the week.

It's pretty amazing the amount of flights US operates at CLT considering Charlotte isn't a very big city (both population and O & D) and the airport itself is pretty small. I like transiting through CLT for this very reason although because the airport is so small yet handles so many travelers it can get quite crowded.

I had no clue that US PHX operation was larger than PHL! That's shocking!

How is DTW with DAL and PHL with USA left off this list?

Isn't DAL bigger at DTW than MSP? I know it is for international
also isn't US biggest hub at PHL? it is for international

I thought this was the case as well. I also thought that PHL was larger than CLT. Shows the things one can learn I guess..

True....I actually forgot it was Saturday...

Here are Fridays numbers...

AA Mainline:477
Eagle/Executive:317

So AA has around 794 departures out of DFW...

It's because ORD is split between UA and AA. If either one of them had the place to themselves it would easily rival, although maybe not pass ATL.

and for what it's worth MDW and LAS both have ~220 daily flights from WN. I think MDW just recently passed LAS as the largest station by a few flights, but overall they're pretty much even.
