Which Is Better? Virgin Or AirNewZealand To LHR

Tue Jun 08, 2010 9:32 pm

I'm planning a return trip from LAX to LHR shortly and am torn between the 2 airlines. I'm interested in flying 1 of the legs in Premium Economy but am not sure if Virgin's is as good as New Zealand's and wonder if its worth the extra $100 to fly with ANZ? Anyone have any experience with premuim economy on either of the airlines that they could share or should I just book it in economy and go with the cheapest instead?

NZ PE is excellant value for money IMHO. I have flown PE a number of times and it more like C - rather that Y +.

Gate to gate IFE, similar food to J, great crews.

As much as I love Virgin Atlantic, Air New Zealand is, in my opinion, the world's best airline. Even the CEO of SQ has publically acknowledged their superior service so that certainly says something! However, you won't go wrong with either one.

I've flown both airlines on the LAX-LHR route, albeit in Upper/Business Class. To me (my opinion), the flight attendants were much more helpful and attentive on NZ than they were on VS. Both carriers fly the same exact seat in Business class (not sure about Premium Economy). You can go to seatguru.com to get some info on the pitch, width, etc.

From a service perspective, however, I think that NZ is better. But to be fair, VS still has very good service (mostly). It's just a little bit more of a flashy airline, I think.

the amount of times i've flown between LAX and LHR which is around 8 times now, 1st experience was with VS and i was down the back, service was OK. every other time I have flown with NZ their's just something about them that's makes you on your holiday from the moment you check in to the moment you get off the plane. Premium Economy i've only done that a couple of times and that's on the long sector LHR-AKL via LAX its worth the money, service is fab, food is overwhelming, IFE is beyond this world. and NZ now have the International Airline Concierge which No other airline have, there a great help if you need something last min and your forgot to do it.

shortly means your being flying before NZ take hold of their new 777-300ER in November then and they have released a new product for this aircraft which will take the airline to great heights.. !
Vietnam time..

NZ all the way. I beleive their Y+ is very similar to VS' when it comes to configuration, but other than that, there's no comparison. From what I understand, VS has cutback on Y+ catering and it's now the same as Y albeit on some bone china vs. high end plastic dishes.

Catering and service are of a much higher caliber, standards on NZ. Personally, I would take NZ over BA any day too.

This choice of Y+ for NZ will soon get so much better too as the new configuration (introduced by the 77W earlyish next year and followed by the 772 retrofit) is turning the product further away from being Economy. They'll have a 2-2-2 layout in Y+ and from what I've seen, I'm keen to try it out! Window facing seats as opposed to the herringbone ones in J. The person on the aisle only needs to swivel to allow the person at the window to get out.
It's all about the destination AND the journey.
