Questions About 1997 DL Flight

Tue Jun 15, 2010 12:04 pm

Hey guys, hope you can help me out with this one that's been bugging me for a while.

Spring of 1997, I flew CVG-SFO-CVG with my grandma to visit family out there and I always think back to it because it was the first semi-long haul flight that I can actually remember. It wasn't too long after the '96 Olympics in Atlanta because I remember Delta still had all the ads and special markings for it. Now 2 questions:

1) Could somebody with a time table tell me what aircraft I flew CVG-SFO. It was a daytime flight, I remember the seats were red and there was an in-flight movie, it was a single-aisle plane as well. I think it was either an MD-90 or 727 but I'm not exactly sure.

2) Would anyone be able to tell me what I flew back SFO-CVG because this is the one that really interests me. I remember we left SFO during the day. Here's where it gets interesting for me, I think it was an ex-United aircraft because I recall the seats being gray with that vertical rainbow pattern of United. Also, for some reason I think it was a wide-body, I'm not completely sure but I just remember feeling that the plane felt a lot bigger than the one going out. Did DL operate very many ex-UA aircraft?

Any info you guys could provide would be great.

Thanks in advance

I dont recall Delta having movies or TV's in their 727's...and I've been a few gadzillion. Was the seating 2-3? If so it was an MD-90.
The only one left with single aisle is the 757. I'm pretty sure the MD-80 wasnt used CVG-SFO. I think the farthest west from CVG the Delta MD-80 was used was to PHX......could be wrong though....

I don't mean to hijack the topic, but I too have a DL 1997 question! I flew on a 767 from CVG to MCO at some point. It was a very-late morning or midday flight. Any idea if it was a -200 or -300?

Using the BTS website, I looked at some random dates in Feb-Apr of 1997. I saw only the L-1011, 727, or 757 on CVG-SFO-CVG. Maybe the movie indicates that it was a 757.

Now on the way back maybe it was an ex-UA L-1011. DL grabbed about 5 of them from UA. It had been a long time though since they had been acquired in the late -80s, so I wonder if the interiors would have still been unchanged. Other than that I can't think of any ex-UA 727s or 757s that could have operated the flight.

It looks DL operated a late afternoon 767 to MCO. I checked some random days throughout 1997, and I saw all but one -300. So knowing DL, it could be either, but it was probably a -300.

Thank you! Any idea whether or not it was an ER?

You're welcome.

I only saw early build non-ERs in the search I made. For example, starting at registration N116DL to about N124DL. Doesn't mean an -ER couldn't have been subbed from time to time though.

Thanks MSPNWA! It would be really cool if indeed I did get to fly on an L-1011. And from my understanding after a little more research, the UA L-1011's that DL got were inherited from Pan Am.

As far as the flight out to SFO, it's still kind of a mystery I guess. The only clue I can clearly remember was when I asked my parents what kind of plane it was, it had 'stretch' at the end of it.
