Airlines That Have Occupied Same Gates For Years..

Tue Jun 22, 2010 5:11 am

What airlines have had a long history occupying the same gates/ terminals at various airports.

I'll speak for Boston Logan. While United has been in the the same terminal for year and years (back to the 1960's I think), it hasn't been using the same gates the whole time.

But both American and USAirways have used virtually the same space since their terminal was built. Pretty much all other carriers at Logan have played musical chairs. International carriers I put in a different category!

zrs70, you are asking at airports other than at a HUB/focus city where the particular airline has had a large presence for years, correct?

Well, put it this way.... DL/ NW has had a large/ hub presence at DTW for years. But they have not occupied the same gates (new terminal/ gate changes). But AA has stayed in the same place at DFW pretty much since the airport was built!

I'm looking for airlines whose space has not budged in years and years!

Up until a few years ago, DL & NW have occupied the same terminal space and gates at PHL (Terminal E) since it opened in the mid-1970s.

CO & UA (minus the more recent Hammerhead D gates) have used the same gates at Terminal D for decades as well (again, PHL).

US has occupied most of if not all of Terminal B (& its gates) for decades also; dating back to when it was still AL (guess) and before PHL became a large hub for them.

Quoting zrs70 (Thread starter):
I'll speak for Boston Logan.

EA occupied the original Terminal A (& its gates) from when it was built (60s) right up to the carrier's demise.

Until the new Terminal A came to be, I believe that at least some of the gates (maybe more?) that DL used in Terminal C date back to the 1972 merger w/NE and to when the terminal was first built (NE only).

I know NW occupied I think it was B21 (may be B19) at BDL for a really long time. Up until they moved to the new terminal.

CO in Terminal C and IAH since the mid 80's and before, if you consider the pre TI stuff. IIRC, it seems CO at LAX has been in near the 60's Gates since the early 1990's, if not before.

At Brisbane (BNE) Qantas, and TAA before them, have used the same gates at the Domestic Terminal since it opened, I can't remember when that was but certainly well over 20 years. The stands in question are 1-25, although only 16-25 are jet-bridges, the others been used by the QantasLink.

DL has had all of the gates on Concourse A and all of the gates on the south end of Concourse B at ATL since the Midfield Complex opened in 1980.

An interesting thing to note about ATL. When you factor in the mergers, there are gates that have historically been occupied by the same airline since the Midfield Complex opened.

Some of the former NW gates on D-South were originally assigned to Southern, who had merged to form Republic prior to Midfield opening. Republic was bought out by NW, who was bought out by DL.

Some of the US gates on D-North date back to the Piedmont days. When Piedmont was bought out by USAir, they became USAir gates. When US Airways was bought out by America West, they moved their flights to US Airways' gates (Years earlier, HP did have a gate(s) on D-North but relinquished them to DL and moved to the end of D-South.).

In TUS Delta has been at the same gates for many years dating back to at least the mid 90's. With the exception of Delta leasing one gate to B6 during their stay in TUS. The gates have been re-numbered which I did not know about until I flew in there back in May of this year. In fact most of the airport had been remodeled which I will say it very much was in need of.

ORD's international airlines tend to hold onto certain gates, it's quite interesting:

Aer Lingus has been using Gate M9 for as long as I can remember. (When there has been 2 flights in a day eg. last year - EI123 from DUB, EI127 from SNN - They have also used M7)

Alitalia usually use M4

Air India M12

Air France M7

KLM M8

British Airways M10/M11

LOT M1

Virgin Atlantic M16

Swiss M12

SAS M15

When Austrian Airlines was at ORD it would always be seen at M21

At Shannon there are certain gates that airlines always use too:
Continental Airlines - Gate 108
Delta Air Lines - Gate 109
Aer Lingus flight EI132 (arrival from BOS, departure to DUB) - Gate 11
British Airways - Gate 108
