SAA 744 Current Routes And Details?

Mon Jun 21, 2010 4:06 am

I just discovered that SAA has 1 or 2 744s back in service and I am curious if anybody knows their utilization plan?

Apparently they are to be retired 'at the end of the year' but as I am booked on SA61 LOS-JNB on 12/27 I'd really be curious if they'll still be in service then (reservation shows equipment as 747-400)

Also I can't find any seating plan for the SAA 744 and would be grateful for any resources - seatguru only has their Airbus equipment these days...

I think they tend to be utilized on the JNB-LAD and West Africa routes like ACC,etc on less than daily services, hence the need for lots of capacity.

F cabin is 1+2+1, J is 2+3+2 all on the main deck, and Y is 10 abreast on the main deck + 10 rows (79 to 88) of 3+3 (ABC+HJK) on the upper deck.

Thanks - I read they were pressed into service for the LOS route, but didn't know if they operated the odd LHR service during the northern winter

Good info on the seating - no idea that SAA is offering F on these flights - I guess the F may be similar to the one on the Transaero website: they seem to have picked up an ex-SAA 744 and from what I read haven't made much change to the cabin - can that be right?!

These have been put back into service for some time. LOS-JNB is one of their 744 routes as per schedule. The 340s are nicer though.

ZS-SBS (GE-powered) and ZS-SAZ (RR) are still listed as active. Both are quite young, 1998-built, the youngest 744s SAA had. A third frame (ZS-SBK) has just been picked up by Transaero and is already flying for them since some days.

A few years back I flew SAA´s A346s and 744s. The A346s biz seat were excellent, though I preferred the more intimate front cabin of the 744 (as always, because its unique and unbeatable).

I flew LHR-JNB on an SAA 744 on April 14 this year. Remember what happened the next day? (It seems so long ago now...)

It was a late aircraft change for the scheduled 346 and the upper deck was closed, which is my favourite place to sit on the 744

The good thing was that the flight took an hour less than scheduled

so the product on the 744 is an older generation? I have to try and find a pic of the J seats on the 744 - I selected seats in front of zone 2, so without a seatmap I'm really just taking a chance (I guess there are no 'bad' seats in J   )

bummer...only 3 airlines then - SA, AF and BR - still have Y on the upper deck - can't think of any others

I believe JL and NH still have a few 744Ds used on domestic routes. They have Y on the upper deck.

''South African Airways (SAA) is planning a second phase-out its Boeing 747-400 fleet at the end of this year.

The Star Alliance carrier first grounded its remaining 747-400s in 2007 as part of a fleet and network restructuring. But while the grounding was initially intended to be permanent, SAA decided to reactivate part of its 747-400 fleet in late 2008.

SAA initially called the re-introduction of 747s a temporary measure but 747-400s have continued to operate in the carrier's network over the last 18 months.

SAA's new CEO, Siza Mzimela, says the carrier is currently operating two 747-400s on its Johannesburg to Lagos and Luanda routes. But she says the aircraft are now scheduled to permanently exit SAA's fleet "at the end of the year".

She acknowledges this represents a "re-phase out" of the 747 rather than an initial phase-out but explains: "You can't exit aircraft if you don't have a replacement."

SAA over the last few years has had to push back multiple times its plans to lease additional widebody aircraft. The carrier is now scheduled to begin taking delivery in early 2011 of six new Airbus A330-200s which SAA last year agreed to lease. While the A330-200s are mainly seen as a replacement for SAA's A340-200s the new aircraft will also allow the carrier to finally pursue a permanent phase-out of its 747s.

SAA at one point operated 10 747-400s but returned one batch of aircraft in 2006 and a second batch after the 2007 restructuring was initiated.''

Absolutely. The 346 J seat is a true lie flat, while the 744 J seat is "straight but angled". I flew them both on a trip a couple of years ago and the 346 is a much better product. Better seat, better IFE, larger screen, newer quieter cabin... I love the 747 but the 346 is just.... better. (Except for performance)

I was just in Jburg. It looks very impressive painted in the SAA scheme but I believe only one in painted and the other remains white. I think there were brought back to compete with Arik Airlines which at one time was flying A345 on the route to Lagos which since have lost out to SAA 744.
