Huge Temp. Changes Between Departure And Arrival?

Wed Jun 23, 2010 10:57 am

Which current nonstop route would have the largest temperature change between departure and arrival at certain times of the year? Perhaps SVO-DXB, MSP-MIA, or ANC-PHX?

Also, have you ever been on a flight with a temperature change of at least 65F/35C between departure and arrival?

I think the KLM/SLM service AMS-PBM faces major differences sometimes.

I once was on a LPA-AMS flight. Gran canaria was having a very warm winterweek at 35C, my -9C arrival at AMS wasn't pleasant at all. While normally I don't mind some coldness.

A shorter flight to the extremes. MCO-PIT in January. MCO 78F. PIT on arrival -14F. Amusing to see a guy trying to smoke by running out to the curb dressed in shorts and a Disney tee-shirt taking a few puffs, laying cigarette on the curb, running back in terminal to get warm, running back out to puff, running back in..........all while waiting for a parking lot shuttle bus!

Yes, and it wasn't a too long one either. YYZ - ANU in February 2003. -17 C in YYZ, +31 C in ANU.
310, 319, 320, 321, 333, 343, 345, 346, 732, 735, 73G, 738, 744, 752, 762, 763, 77L, 77W, 788, AT4, AT7, BEH, CR2, CRA, CR9, DH1, DH3, DH4, E75, E90, E95, F28, F50, F100, Saab 340, YAK40

BGI-MIA-PIT. I forget the year, but it was 32C (just shy of 90F) in Barbados, and something like 5F (-15C) in PIT. MIA was maybe 80F / 27C. I wasn't the guy PI4EVER saw, but I sure did get a lot of strange looks in PIT because I was in shorts and a tee-shirt. I had to stand out on the curb waiting for my wife to come pick me up -- THAT was cold!

How about GFK-IWA in the winter? -40 F in Grand Forks and 80 in Phoenix. Talk about a shock to the system.

I had a connection in ATL, but when I flew MSP-FLL it was below freezing in MSP and 80+ in FLL. When I got back to Minnesota (by car) a few days later, it was below 0F. I missed Florida at that point. I've also flown MSP-PHX a few times in the winter, but it's been long enough ago that I can't remember temperatures.

MSP-HNL/MIA in the winter would be a consistent shock to the system.

Hell, yeah...almost any time I fly to BOS from BDA in February. I can leave BDA in 72F temperatures, and less than two hours later I'm at Logan, freezing my backside off in 0F weather!!!

I've experienced about a 55 degree temperature difference. Got on the plane in MCO where it was about 65 degrees. Landed in LGA and it was 10 degrees.

Well I flew DEN-AMA-DAL on WN's one-stop service on December 25th, 2007. IIRC, it was a chilling 28F in DEN with 8" of snow on the ground from the night before. We got off the plane in Dallas to a temperature in the 70's. We got home, my dad put shorts on and went out front to mow the lawn.

The absence of airbridges can catch you out too. I recall flying Gulf Air from LHR - DEL, leaving a cool London (5-10C) then walking across boiling tarmac at Muscat as there were no airbridges (40+ C)...

DME-SYD on TransAero must be quite a shock.
Likewise winter CPH/OSL/ARN to Thailand flights must be a massive change.

Here is a one of mine. Leaving SEA with it being 50F and arriving into LAS 112F. I describe the opening of the cabin door and walking into the jetway like stepping into a pizza oven.

Or "New in Town" when Rene Zellweger flew from Miami to New UIm, Minnesota and walked out of the terminal into a blizzard in her little black dress and heels.

Personally I travelled from Johannesburg to Rochester, MN via JFK and ORD in January, which is the height of our summer so certainly I met the criteria of 35C difference.

ANC-HNL

I flew that route on Jan 3, 1987 and yes there is some serious temp. change as expected. Goes without saying on the flight back people were in denial and kept their Hawaiian tshirts, flip flops on all the way to inside the terminal at ANC. It is always a great scene at ANC to see few people like that, in the middle of the winter, coming back from vacation.

Flights from Canadian cities like Edmonton or Winnipeg, where winter temperatures of minus 40C (same as F) are not unknown, to points in Mexico or the Caribbean, would see a temperature difference of about 70 deg. C or about 120 deg. F since the temperature at the destination is more likely to be plus 30C (about plus 90F). Even shorter flights of about 3 hours to southern California or Arizona can mean temperature differences almost that great.

How about any AA A300 flight out of JFK going to the caribbean during the winter? Apparently that's where the former birds struggled with the most.

Even into late May and early June there are some interesting temp swings when traveling from place likes YYC and YEG to places like LAS and PHX. My firends that live in those areas flew down to LAS earlier this month and it was over a 50 degree difference in temperatures.

To me, the heat isn't the problem, it's the humidity. When I came back from LAS a few weeks back, I got off the plane here in Atlanta and the change from little to no humidity to 60+% humidity was a huge shock to the system (What was interesting is that it was hotter in Atlanta for the bulk of my trip to Las Vegas. They had been having record heat in Las Vegas a few days prior to my trip, but the hottest it got during my trip was 95 the day I arrived. Usually once the temps go above 100F, they stay there until sometime in early September.).

Not the biggest temperature change but it felt like it...

...a few years back flew, MIA-LGW-EDI in February. Departed late afternoon/early evening on a warm sunny day in South Florida, arrived at EDI next morning, stepped out the aircraft, no air bridge and facing straight into (what felt like) a gale force wind driving sleet into our faces. Temp must have been about Zero Celsius but I hate to think what the wind-chill factor was. It sure drove home the idea our vacation was well and truly over!

Yeah. That reminds me a trip from SYD-LHR once, from around 30C to about 0C. SYD and DME in Jan/Feb could have temperature difference of I guess 40-(20) = 60C?

I did MCO-KEF-LHR on FI one winter, I don't know the exact temps, but the difference between MCO and KEF was extreme. Have also done MCO-YQX-LGW in the dead of winter on TZ, that was *not* fun on an overnight flight, walking down the airstairs to the terminal was the coldest I'd ever felt (at that time).

Cheers

Just looked at Wx for both CHC and DXB for last week. You could go from -4 deg C in CHC to 50C in DXB.

I recall a flight in 2004: Sin-Moscow in January: Singapore: +33 degrees, Moscow was -26 degrees. Ok, the flight was via FRA, but still the change was quite a shock to the system. To make matters worse, our (checked) bag with coats for three adults and one child went missing - so it was a quick dash to the thankfully waiting car in just our pullovers.

Moscow went on to drop to -37C later during that week....

BKK +30C ---> HEL -30C happens sometimes, probably bigger differences will be seen when AY re-opens SIN.

This summer I've seen a bit confused visitors at HEL arriving from DEL, prepared for the arctic summer with vwarm clothing and the thermometer shows +30C and above
