My preferred route was from BGR to LGA then JFK to HKG, but according to local New Yorkers the travel between LGA and JFK is definitely not worth it..!
Well i can tell you that I didn't have any issues when I did it. Just leave yourself enough time. I did the reverse, and did what some would consider cutting it close by leaving only 3 hours between scheduled arrival time and departure time. Even with an issue at baggage claim, I still made it to LGA with no hassle. Granted, my flight arrived at 5:35 am, and left at 8:30, so I was just before rush hour really hit. Even still, it was still pretty heavy traffic. Furthermore, normally, there is a shuttle between the two for like $10/person, but I needed to leave before the first shuttle did, so I had to take a taxi (I actually got conned into a car service, but as I recall, it was only like $30, which I think is like $5 more than a taxi would've been).
If you leave yourself enough time, it shouldn't be much of an issue.
The real issue, though, is that American Eagle doesn't fly to Maine. Depending on when you're leaving, AA/B6 might have a codeshare agreement by then, and B6 flies to PWM. Other than that, you're best bet is going to be either drive to Boston, or pick another airline to get you to NYC, then fly to HKG on CX.
