Midtown Manhattan To LGA In The Morning?

Sat Jul 31, 2010 9:23 pm

Simple question for my New York friends... how long should I plan for the drive from near Grand Central to LGA to take on a weekday morning (1030 flight, so probably showing up at LGA around 0900)? I've spent a lot of time in New York but, oddly, never departed at that time. Thanks for your help.

I would say 20-30 minutes. It's not a difficult trip. Choose your route carefully and less hassles will ensure (ie check to see if construction is happening on your planned route).

Take the Queensborough (59th Street) Bridge or the Midtown Tunnel to the LIE, to the BQE, to the Grand Central to LGA. Otherwise, if you think it pays, FDR to the Triborough. That's a bit out of the way but it might be faster as there would be fewer lights and it's a straight shot on the GCP. As planeguy727 said, probably 20-30 minutes.

At that time of day I think the FDR to Triborough is faster, even if distance is a bit further.

While the drive could easily take only 20 to 30 minutes, I would give 45 unless you are the kind of person who likes the adrenaline of "will I make it/ won"t I". All you need is one fender bender on the FDR or elsewhere and it will be much longer. Also, Midtown at rush hour (the 9 AM Grand Central part) could be iffy. My office is in that area and if I were doing this trip I would leave at 8:15 and go via FDR/ Triboro which by the way is now officially named the RFK Bridge.
