I did it a year back when wifi was just introduced onboard, even though the brochure said voip was blocked, skype worked just fine ... Now I did so with NO seat mate, in domestic First class and ONLY did so to see if it was blocked. I WOULD NOT do it AGAIN and will PROTEST till the cows come home ANY effort to allow telecommunication inflight! I am a techno -geek and did it just to see IF it could be done. I have heard from friends that certain ports are blocked and they have not been able to connect to voip, mostly via gogoinflight.

On a side note I was on a DL DC9-50 flt to ATL two weeks ago that had gogoinflight aboard.

Why would you protest telecommunications in flight?

Why because it is completely obnoxious to be trapped while someone has a loud phone conversation next to you or in a neighboring row. Text away but shut up no one is interested in your conversation but the person on the other line. Besides it is specifically against airline policy to use VOIP with the inflight wifi.
Enough about flying lets talk about me!

I agree, telephone call should not be made on a plane unless they provide a kind of telephone boot, on long haul flights maybe, were they don't disturb other passengers.
And because there will always be people who find a way around the blocked voip I believe airlines should opt for a system of connecting to the internet with a cable in stead of WiFi and such that F/A can disconnect certain seats if the content is inappropriate or it's used in violation with the airline policy.
