What Don't You Like About Your Airline

Sun Aug 15, 2010 5:49 pm

If you're like me, you primarily fly one airline for the sake of miles and convience, epecially if you live in a hub city (like I do).
I used to fly UA all the time, but it became more and more difficult out of SEA. UA kept cutting back, so for the last 4 years I've been flying AS. For the most part it is good. I love having customer service right here in the US with people I can easily understand. AS' schedules are mostly good along the West Coast. Lots of flights to pick from.
The check in procedure at SEA is slick as well.

But here are few things I'd like to see change (some aren't very practical of course):
1 - fleet - modern, yes, but I sure would like to see some bigger planes, especially on those longer haul flights.
2 - Interior. Honestly, I don't care about leather seats. I do care about PTV's ( I know AS has the video viewers) and legroom. There is no economy plus
3 - What do I get for my MVP Status - little. Offer me more perks.
4 - First class. I know first class on most domestic flights isn't much to write home about, but I find AS lacking. The seats are a little bigger with more legroom, but not much else
5 - I like partner Horizon's free wine/beer. AS, why not do the same? Or how about a meal on a 5 hour flight to the East Coast.
6 - Entertainment. UA has really nailed this with TV's that show various programs, even on shorter flights. AS has nothing.
Heia Norge!

I can't complain much since I'm a non rev, but for DL--

* Lack of retro paint jobs

* Their apparent dislike of props (even the efficient ones)

* Starting and ending the same routes like crazy

* How NW gate agents can't do some things DL gate agents can (nothing against the NW guys, it will take a lot of time and it's completely unfamiliar to them, but I have lots of problems going through MEM and DTW and other places with NW agents, I can instantly tell them apart when they start to work and can't do some things DL guys can do.)

Other than that, great airline
Ironically I have never flown a Delta MD-90 :)

On DL:

No same-day standby or confirmed for Silver Medallion and non-Elites. I find it very annoying to have a 3 hour layover in ATL, watch two flights ahead of mine depart to my destination, and know both flights have plenty of empty seats but I'm still told I can't get on the earlier light. I know this is not specific to DL as other airlines do have similar policies. It's still dumb in my opinion.

That's really my biggest complaint.

AA:
IFE, they need to start getting some on all their planes. Well not the MD-80s but the rest need PTVs. And fix up the interiors of some of the old domestic 757s. Besides for that I cant think of anything wrong. They have always served me well. Of course meals in coach would be nice but until most airlines start giving them I can complain about it.

WN In the past family boarding was coupled with pre-boards. Families with small children tended to sit in the first few rows. As I boarded I was happy to see this and selected a row a few back. Now with family boarding after the As, the screamers and seat kickers are dispersed throughout the plane.

Volaris I am pleased that they offer snacks but they tend to be junk food. Please offer a healthy alternative.

Yeah its kinda the same that the DL matic system can't do stuff as easily or efficiently as the old NW system.

As a Delta Platinum that will shortly make Diamond, the biggest issue for me is that international upgrades are only good on Y/B/M fares - much more restrictive than CO/UA/AA's offerings. From what I have been told by my sources though, this is being re-examined in the wake of the CO/UA merger.

Other than that, Delta is doing a lot of right. Wi-Fi on nearly all flights domestically is great, and there are enough planes with PTVs and inseat power out there. I get upgraded nearly all the time (have missed one this year), and love the new award ticket upgrade program - especially since as a Platinum on an award ticket, I am still ahead of all (non-full Y) paying Golds and Silvers on revenue tickets - a big plus, and something that's helping me drive myself to DM.

Now that I live in the Netherlands, I travel with KLM frequently.

I dislike:
- 25% mileage accrual for all but the most expensive tickets
- website is absolutely terrible; website often times out in the middle of a reservation, award bookings nearly impossible without calling, cannot change flights online unless purchased at their website, etc.
- flights at convenient times are always more expensive than early or late flights; also, expedia is often $100+ cheaper than KLM's own website
- no seat assignment until check-in, and even elites are charged extra for exit rows
- snack service within Europe is terrible, usually just prepackaged cookies or crackers
- priority boarding for elites is not usually respected
- middle seats are not blocked on Europe Select, meaning you're just as uncomfortable as those in coach despite the higher price

Despite the issues above, flying with KLM is light years ahead of the domestic travel experience within the United States. The biggest difference is that travel within Europe is free of much of the baggage drama, since the first bag is free and carry-on limits are much more strictly enforced. Now, there are some good things too...

I like:
- only 30 FF segments to gold level, which includes free lounge access
- out of 30 flights, only one has been more than 10 minutes late, and it was in the middle of an ice storm
- fast check-in and security for elites at AMS, and many other airports
- first bag is always free and carry-on limits are more enforced, leading to less drama about bin space

I have a gripe with Cathay Pacific's frequent flyer program, the Marco Polo Club... dislike the fact that there are no lifetime miles or status (I know, I know, most airlines don't), but the fares are expensive.

What I don't like about American Airlines is the regional jets they contracted to fly!

My two airlines of choice right now are US Airways and Virgin America.

US Airways:

- I hate having to connect through Phoenix to get anywhere, I'd like a little choice, like through PHL or CLT!

Virgin America:

- They don't fly to either SLC or IAH, but I am patiently waiting.

I have a wierd love-hate relationship with Qantas' on-board catering...

I love the fact that they still have it! Breakfast in the morning, snacks and sandwiches throughout the day, and dinner in the evening washed down with complimentary bear and wine. All on ~ 1 hour flight. Seriously I think QF's short haul catering is probably the best in the world.

But that doesn't mean I like it! The dinner service is usually fairly inedible. I only fly QF domestic and use EK and EY international so maybe I've been spoiled and expect more from airline food than I reasonably should but still...

While it's never going to be a problem for me I'm also annoyed that they've reduced the account inactivity limit on QFF from 3 years to 18 months. It just seems like a cheap and trashy move.

Oh and now I've got going, AVOD on all trans-Tasman and trans-continental services would be nice. It's unnecessary on SYD-BNE but on a 5 hour leg to PER it could be useful.

Still all up they're pretty hard to fault which is why me and thousands of others book them without even considering the competition.

I fly United Airlines the most.
What I dislike about them the most is that they have no orders for the 747-8i.
I wish they had more direct flights to their destinations in Asia instead of having to connect in Tokyo.
Not a fan of the proposed livery change for the merger with Continental.

Try coming up to the good old USA, where there IS no domestic catering on US airlines, except in First Class...on flights of 4 hours or more.

That's why I said I love it and hate it at the same time!
Love the fact it still exists.... Far and away the best thing about QF (domestic). It also happens, paradoxically, to be IMHO one of the weakest aspects of their product.

Maybe I'm just bipolar!

That's surprising. I find KL's website very good and have never had a problem, including award bookings.

Quoting rwSEA (Reply 8):

Not correct. If you're Gold or Platinum there's no charge for exit row seats or other seats with extra legroom. Excerpt from KL website:

If you are a Platinum or Gold member of Flying Blue, you can get a seat with extra legroom free of cost.

Quoting rwSEA (Reply 8):

I agree, although you are slightly more comfortable since the first 7 or 8 rows on KL 737s have 34 inch pitch, about 2 inches more than the rest. When flying economy it's always best to choose a seat as close to the front as possible as several rows with the extra seat pitch are often part of the Y cabin when only 3 or 4 rows are used for Europe Select.

Being based in Australia then I usually just fly Qantas.
There is 2 things I don't like.
- no international confirmed upgrades at time of booking.
- the seat pitch on the long haul aircraft, both the 747 and the A380, why Qantas didn't go for 32 or 33" instead of the 31" seat pitch I find annoying.

There are plenty of things I like about Qantas so will continue to fly with them.
Why fly non stop when you can connect
