Booking With Expedia, Do I Get The Seats I Want?

Mon Aug 16, 2010 9:42 am

Instead of doing Air France Directly, I saw it's cheaper on expedia, but I don't know if i can choose my seats? I want to be seated with my friend when I book us both

It's ok Found something:
Many flights booked on the Expedia site will give you the option of using the 'seat pinpointer' to request your seats. If available you will be able to select your seats here. The 'Seat pinpointer' link can be found under flight details on your itinerary page which you can access through 'My Trips'.

Please note the request will go through to the airline, but in most circumstances it is best to check-in early in order to guarantee your seat choice.

A word of warning with Expedia .... getting a refund out of them is horrific.

I had to cancel a flight to Thailand at the beginning of May because of the political issues (not that they are that much of a problem, but when the UK decided to advise against all travel that makes travel insurance invalid).

Thai were offering cancellations, I guess as they are the national carrier and so felt obliged to in some way. So I cancelled the booking with Expedia who told me 10 weeks for a refund to come through. It's now 16 weeks and despite several length calls to their call centre still no joy (and of course those calls are chargeable with Expedia making money from them).

I've given them until Wednesday until I go first to my credit card company and if there is still no joy to the small claims court.

A little research on google will show you this is not an isolated issue. Do book it with a credit card not a debit card even if it attracts a charge.

Thanks Ming, have you tried the CAA? I know if something goes bust they do something...

Once I've booked the flight I wouldn't change it anyway as it's only in september and other flight costs are alot more, I don't like travel insurance either so the invalid thing is ok, and probably the reason I wouldn't get travel insurance, because they make practically everything invalid lol...

I only have 3 things I need to protect with my life, My Camera, Money (£150 ish) and passport   oh and laptop, but that never leaves my side apart from if i leave the hotel room but I guess it's not covered there either

Thanks too. Not really the CAAs problem in this case, nothing has gone bust, Thai very nicely allowed people to cancel flights during the political problems in Thailand, it is expedia that is not refunding the money. They are not in any sort of financial trouble as far as I am aware, they just have unreasonable business practices, which seems to involve holding onto your money until you do something serious about it and also making you spend money on hours of phone calls to their premium rate call centre lines.

The Credit Card company has a duty to sort out these things, so hopefully they will kick them into processing the refund.

I'm not really bothered about travel insurance either, it is really just the potential for medical costs that is the issue. Even those in somewhere like Thailand would be bearable in most cases, but something like medical repatriation back to the UK would be pretty horrific.

As I say, just be careful with Expedia ... they seem great until they aren't.

That's bad about not giving it back easily...i'll try lastminute too then, but I think £1150 is the max for me on 2 pax to lax lol

I've used Expedia many many times and never had a problem.
If AF have more expensive tickets, have you tried booking through klm.com, or delta.com? For the cheaper seats, you may not get to choose your seats until checkin, but 99% of the time 2 seats booked together will get placed together anyway.

I have no experience in Expedia, but some in seat picking. I booked ORD-DCA on UA through Orbitz last summer and used the seat picking option. I don't believe it cost me any extra. I picked seat 10A and 10B on what seemed to be a A320 hoping to get a good view of the engine. Despite this being about four months prior to the flight there were several seats already pick on the seat map. When we got to the airport it turned out our ride had been changed into a 757, but that didn't affect our seat request.

So to answer your question: my experience is that you get the seat you requested.

I've never used Expedia, but when I've booked through other travel sites I've always received an email with the confirmation number from the airline. I've always been able to go to the airline's web site and bring up my reservation using that confirmation number, and select my seat there. I've never flown Air France, but I would assume that would work with them.

Can you elaborate this ? I didn't know that the credit card company can put pressure on the travel agent ?

Anyway some explanations can be very useful...

Many thx !
