Your First Flight...what Airplane And Airline?

Sat Aug 21, 2010 2:37 pm

Hi,

I always wanted to ask people. When was the first time you've ever flown? What airline? What Airplane?

I'll start:

Date: April 10 1993
Route: Budapest - Prague
Airline: CSA
Aircraft: Tupolev 154

I remember the flight like it was yesterday, even though I was only a child. Whe we acceleated down the runway, I could not believe how fast we were going. Once we lifted up, I felt my stomach "raise in my head"... Loved the feeling. When we landed in Prague, I remember seeing a guy "plane spotting" and I was thinking "Wow! That must be really cool to do".
Superior decisions reduce the need for superior skills.

Good thread.

February 1998

Dublin - Frankfurt

Aer Lingus

Boeing 737

I screamed when we took off, haha! Such a great feeling, and like you Vio, my head being squashed into me seat! Such a smooth flight it was.

Mine was in 1983, NCL-GER, Orion Airways B737-200. I was only 3 so can't remember a lot of it, but do remember disembarking in GER and flying back to NCL at night time.

Mine was in 1987, flying LHR-MLA with Air Malta on a Boeing 720. I don't remember a thing as I wasn't even a year old, but someone travelling with me got a picture which confirms the type to me, all my family could recall was the Air Malta part.

My first flight was in 1996 on a US Boeing 733 from YYZ-PHL. I remember it was my brothers birthday (he was turning 2) and they upgraded us to first class for the flight. I remember the F/A bringing me tons of cookies during the flight, and visiting the flight deck also.

According to my parent's, I asked the Captain "Where is the turbulence button?". I was a funny infant.......

Great idea for a thread, I look forward to reading more of these.

As far as I remember, it was SIN-HKG in Nov 1999 on SQ's Boeing 747-400. It had PTVs so I guess it should be a 744 and not 743 which SQ still had at that time. However, dating back years ago I have some vague memories about going to Indonesia (probably on GA)...
One way I will fly around the world!

Geez fellas! This will really make me feel old. I was just a VERY, VERY young boy.....
Capital Airlines. DC-3. ORF-ECG-RMT-RDU. Summer 1954. Accompanied my uncle and he paid $5.95 for my "child's" ticket. Loved every minute of it including the airsickness and volumes of vomit he reported to my mother I produced. I got off the plane begging my parents to let me fly again....airsickness and all. My uncle refused to fly with me ever again!
My next ride was just a year later and it was a doozy......California to Guam on a USNavy C-118. Twenty-three hours of flying with an overnight in HNL/Barbers Point NAS and a fuelstop and lunch on Kwajalein. I was hooked thanks to the great guys at Squadron VR-21 that entertained me for most of that flight.
Now where's my walker........

Very good topic idea!

I don't have any details about my first flight, I was only 3 months old at the time in September 1986 (my parents were one of "those people" - I cried the whole way) it was apparently BRS-DUS, no idea what type of plane, airline or anything like that unfortunately

The next flight, that I have been able to get *some* info on was the summer of 1987 a 727 from BRS-FAO from what I've managed to get from my aviation-illiterate family it very well could have been this airline/aircraft:

June 1980 (I was 3,5 years old at that time)

PRG-BOJ

CSA Czechoslovak Airlines

Most likely a Tu-134 (?) My dad claims it was a Yak-40, but given its small seating capacity it seems unlikely to me they would send it for a holiday charter

Quoting PlymSpotter (Reply 3):

Unfortunately I am in the same situation and they didn't even took a picture...   Although I have one standing in front of BOJ terminal.
The next flight I have a positive recollection of was a PRG-SXF-PRG in summer of 1984. CSA Czechoslovak Airlines, Tu-134A, at that time I was already addicted to the magic smell of burnt jet fuel and the NOISE!!!

Easter 1970, aged 9, Luton to Girona, Britannia 737.

This and the return flight a week later are the only two entries in my passenger flying log book (which I maintain to this day) without a registration. If anyone knows how to get them, I can supply the dates!

Memories - watching the flaps and thrust reversers (wasn't expecting the latter!) from my seat behind the left wing. A visit to the cockpit. Spanish farmhouses and their arched verandas on short finals. Writing about it at school later, with a brilliant sketch of the flight deck. We have a black and white photo of my sister and I at the tiny terminal at Girona with the homebound aircraft in the distance.

I next went to Girona 25 years later. That original terminal building was still there!

Air Kentucky from Nashville to Owensboro, Kentucky (BNA-OWB - hence my name on this forum)
Beechcraft 99
My mom says I was quite happy during the flight. However, upon landing in OWB, she was horrified to discover that my diaper had leaked and my seat was completely drenched!! So, if you flew OWB-BNA in January, 1976 on Air Kentucky and sat in a very wet seat, I apologize immensely. How can I make it up to you?

I didn't get to fly for the first time until I was 23 years old, in October 2003. The plane was a BAe-146, operated by Air Wisconsin as United Express. I was flying from RDU to ORD. At ORD I boarded my second flight (with a pretty tight connection in retrospect), a United B757 going to SEA.

I couldn't have asked for a better airline or airplane -- I take pleasure in knowing that there are doubtless people these days who would kill to have the chance to fly the L-1011, let alone with TWA.

Unfortunately I do not remember this flight as I was not quite a year old at the time! Fortunately I had the opportunity to fly TWA's L-1011 on other occasions as well and I do remember some of them, especially my last L-1011 flight, JFK-SJU in February 1996.

I miss TWA, the L-1011, and in general, plentiful widebodies at LGA and PBI (let alone flying between the two).

I was adopted at age 2 from South Korea. My first flight was a Northwest Orient 747 Flight # 22, April 6, 1971, Seoul to Tokyo. And then Northwest Orient 747 Flight #4, April 6, 1971, Tokyo to Seattle.

This has to be the reason I'm obsessed with 747's, right?

United 737

I believe it was a 300, but I'm honestly not sure. I don't know exactly when they retired their 200s and it could have also been a 500. My mom insists it was a 727 but on our tickets that she kept for her vacation scrapbook it says 737 (with no specific model)

1 December 1990, HKG-SIN-PER on Singapore Airlines. Leg 1, HKG-SIN on a 747-300; Leg 2, SIN-PER on a 747-200. I loved every minute of the flight and didn't sleep a wink. I think I spent the entire flight looking out the window.

My first flight is the coolest flight I've taken yet.....but I can't remember it

It was around 1991 when I was about 2, me and my mom went to go visit my grandpa in Udorn, Thailand. So technically my first flight was on Northwest CVG-DTW, but eventually we went CVG-DTW-SFO-NRT-BGK-CNX and on the way back CNX-BGK-TPE-NRT-LAX-DTW-CVG. The only thing I faintly remember is a flight attendant on Korean Air on one of the 747 legs giving me a box of toys to play with. My mom told me that the flight attendants on all the foreign airlines loved me and were always wanting to pick me up and play with me, but when we got back on one of the Northwest flights, she said I walked up to one of the american flight attendants and held out my arms wanting her to pick me up, but she just gave me a weird look LOL.

The first flight that I can remember though was a 737 US Airways flight CVG-PHL-BOS back when US actually still had mainline service to CVG out of that 1 jetway addition in Terminal 3.

Well I think it was in '98 (I wouldve been 4)

if this was my first flight it was ASA embraer 120 brasilia that we took from Louisville to Atlanta. Then we took a Tristar from ATL to MCO or JAX. Not quite sure though.

My first flight was in Sept 1954 during the Olympic Games in Melbourne. I was 4 yo. It was from SYD-MEB (Melbourne - Essendon) & return on an ANA (Australian National Airways, later merged with Ansett Airways to form AnsettANA) DC4. While I don't remember the flight as a whole I remember scenes from it including climbing the air stairs, looking out over the wing and those two big round engines and staring at the fake wood bulkhead.

My first flight was when I was still in the womb, a couple weeks before I was born. I can't say where it went, but it was from Seoul, Korea, and ended up at Norton AFB. My parents say it was C-5.

My First flight was in November of 1987, I was 3 months old, and my grandmother took me to visit family,
My Grandmother is the type of person who logs EVERYTHING, so I have been able to gain knowledge of almost every aspect of the flight

It was From CPH to LHR with Sterling Airways 727-2B7

...

My Nan tells me that I never cried during the whole flight, but that I actually looked as if I liked it,
I guess my love for planes started then :P

The first flight I remember was the same route at age 3,

CPH-LHR on Varig's 747-200 it was part of their LHR-GIG-GRU flight, The plane would fly LHR-CPH-LHR for cleaning in CPH.

...

I Don't know why I remember this particular flight, but it changed flying for me,
The flight was packed and I remember the awesome Varig service, the lemon scented napkins, and the prawn cocktail starters with Dill. My Mom and Grandmother tells me that the stewardeses LOVED me and took me to the cockpit everytime, and also sat me with them in F class. I remember big white chair like seets

Since then, every-time I smell Dill or lemon, it reminds me of flying! Do you guys have any certain smells, places or things, that somehow gives you a smile and reminds you of flying ?

Anywho, I was forever enchanted after that flight, and My parents tell me, that ever since that flight I wanted to be a pilot or an airline employee :P

Although we have all the BLING on board today, flying just is NOT what it used to be, I used to love the whole part of flying from check-in to baggage claim! today it's just ughh!

Also, what ever went wrong with Varig, I remember them having an awesome service, kinda like today's Asian carriers!

I Will never forget the Y cabin interior of Varig, I LOVED IT!

...

On a side-note, My first longhaul flight did't come until 2004 CPH-SIN on SQ 772ER
And what a flight that was

Regards

Daniel

Thats when I started to love planes. I know everything about the flight. The prepacked Breakfast (cold), the toys we got and my mom bought me an inflatable L-1011 and a model L-1011 of LTU on board!

Quoting 330lover (Reply 13):
Mine was Alitalia, BRU-LIN, DC-9. 1st of July 1995. Continuing on 310 to Athens.
Quoting BOACCunard (Reply 22):
I miss TWA, the L-1011,

My first trip was SLC-DEN-JFK-ATH on TWA's L-1011 from SLC to DEN and onto JFK, then a 747SP, (yes, the short squat 747) to ATH.

I don't remember too much about my first flight, I know it was BNA-SAT either on a 727 or MD-80 I was 4, I kept telling my parents "make it go faster, make it go faster" my parents said I loved the turbulence. And now I'm an air traffic controller, and still love the joy of flying.
