Travel Time Vs. Ticket Price Importance?

Mon Aug 23, 2010 2:00 am

Example route is PDX-LHR-PDX.

Air Canada -> route through Calgary (12h total and RIGHT on the GC route) *BEST*
Air Canda -> route through Toronto (more hours, not near GC)
Continental -> route through HOUSTON! (and it's like 14h and no where near the GC)

I am happy to pay more for the more direct option, even if it only saves 2 hours or so. It drives me nuts taking an out of the way pathway to the final destination! (Ignoring novel/new equipment or new airlines) does this bother anyone else?

If the costs/equipement/airline were the same, moot point. But anyone else willing to pay extra to avoid:

- A 15hr flight when there is a 12hr option

- Backtracking / Indirect routing (per the Great Circle, such as PDX-SFO-LHR instead of a PDX-YVR-LHR)

No I wouldnt avoid any extra flights. For instance this summer I flew ARN-LHR-IAH-LAX instead of ARN-LHR-LAX. On the way back I flew LAX-IAH-EWR-ARN with a 5hours wait in EWR instead of LAX-EWR-ARN.

Since I am a college student with no income I take the cheapest route possible. My vacation time is important to me, but flights are part of my vacation. I do however really only fly within the US at this point, so it's not that big of a deal.

Assuming I am traveling for leisure, my decision would depend on the price difference and the number of tickets I am buying. For example, if I am buying 4 tickets and could save $300 per ticket for traveling 3 hours more each way (or $50 per person per extra hour of travel), the $1200 saved could be used in London towards hotel, food, attractions, etc.

I actually seek indirect flights over direct ones, and the madder the routing the better - especially if it's on new airlines or aircraft.

In a month or so I'm flying BCN-DOH-GRU-EZE. Why? Because it was dirt cheap, I add two new aircraft types plus a new airline, and because I really love flying.

When I am traveling on vacation the time option is not so important. For example, I need to travel from SMF to GDL on Christmas Day and arrive as early as possible. With Mexicana not in the picture, I am looking into taking the 6:00 AM US through PHX. It appears to be the best option with the best price.

LOL, I look at it as more flying time per dollar.
When I went BOI-ABQ years ago, BOI-DEN-ABQ was $79 on Frontier, and ABQ-LAX-SFO-BOI was $59 on PSA. Great trip.

I was looking on Delta.com about two years ago, and for an instant there was a nonstop BOI-SLC trip for $228 ow, but one that was BOI-ATL,then connect to DFW, then connect to SLC, for $198 ow. Almost did it just for the fun of it. Naturally, later , that option was no longer there.

Even when you're wedged into a middle seat on a 15-hour nonstop?

Looks like I'm in the minority here then. Not rich but happy to pay a few hundred extra for the direct route.

There is just something that bugs me about backtracking or taking a less efficient routing. Viva La Nonstops!

Well..for example those very cheap flights are often early morning, like 6am departures. I don't do mornings so that's off the agenda. Often with long haul there are many time choices and the price is the same for all of them. Check out BA to NY or Cape Town.

It's always a balance. Price vs timings. Easyjet know this very well as their midday departures are always the most expensive.

If it was just about price I'd be flying out of STN on Ryanair all the time, like the millions of other people who do every day.
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

Luckily never happened to me before, and I don't anticipate it any time soon. Even so, I wouldn't call QR's layout wedged.
