Air Canada 77L & 77W Long Haul - How Good Is It?

Sun Sep 19, 2010 5:32 am

I've been wanting to visit California for a while now. I have a large selection of airlines available and I'd definitely go towards Star Alliance airlines since I have KrisFlyer membership and I want more miles. =D

Checking on the AC website, they seem to offer great prices on the HKG-LAX leg with a transit in Canada. Prices were just around 8000 HKD round trip, which I found it very good. Checking on seatguru, it states that they have 32 inches of seat pitch for their long haul planes, I wonder if it'll be comfortable for a tall person like me? I am 187cm tall. What are the seats like? Soft/hard?

Also, the I'd like to find out how the IFE is like on Air Canada. It seems fine to me and I guess it is almost certain that all their aircrafts has AVOD? How is the food like? I certainly do not like to have yucky food on an aircraft..

Last but not least, I noticed that they have an option of letting you subtract $120 from your airfare if you choose not to accumulate aeroplan miles. Does that apply to other Star Alliance's airlines membership too? It'd be great if I can subtract the $120 from my airfare and get my KrisFlyer miles, though I don't think I'll be able to get the best of both worlds!

Any replies are appreciated. Thanks!

Daniel

Hi Daniel!

Check my trip reports on AC 77L and 7W. AVOD has a decent selection but probbly slightly less than SQ. The AVOD system is not that great and crashes quite oftern although not something I have experienced. Meals are good but not as great as on SQ or NH. Depends on how picky you are.....

Not sure about the last question; call AC reservations in SIN and they should know.

Hi why don't you use the SQ 747 service to LAX. They will be phased out too soon and their service and product is still a lot better than AC ones. How high is the price difference there?
I never flew AC myself, but a good friend of mine did a roundtrip on AC 77W Frankfurt - Toronto and he swored himself to never use it again, because after one hour the IFE crashed and only one videochannel was available.and except for the icecream, the food all tasted the same and was not really good.
If I were you I would go for an asian carrier, because they're still the best

SQ 744's are really bad to fly long haul in Y, service probably not but the IFE and seats are pretty unpleasant for a 20 hour journey.

I flew with them a few times on the FRA SIN and FRA JFK route and I always enjoyed it, the new SQ Y product is better, but the old one still has its charme and is better than most of the other airlines around Europe

AC's B777's are amazing. I don't really like AC's medium range liners like the A320 and A321 because for some whatever reason, the IFE system ALWAYS has a glitch. I've flown on the 77W from YYZ to FRA twice in the last year and my dad has flown the 77W and a few times on the 77L on the YVR-SYD route and YYZ-FRA and YYZ-LHR route numerous times in the last year and the IFE on ALL occasions was flawless. To me, it's the quality of the food and the awesomeness of the IFE system that make a long-haul flight comfortable. the seat for me is a secondary thing. If I have good food and a good movie, I usually forget about the seat.

What i'm saying is AC's IFE system is awesome as it is and from what I've heard, it's usually flawless on their long-haul flights and rapidair flights. The economy meal is great too. As much non-alcoholic beverage as you can drink are complementary. Usually you get one hot meal and the quality of it is good. Always steaming hot, tasty and hunger satisfying.

Also, if you fly AC and are nice and personable with the check-in agent, usually if there are open "Preferred Seats" which are emergency exit row seats that are empty, if you ask, you'll get one. providing the standby list for non-rev is short and those seats are open, the rule is if you ask nicely, chances are you'll get the free upgrade and be happily on your way.

Enjoy your trip on whichever carrier you choose.

Kind Regards

I love AC. It is so much better than United and various other American carriers. I also prefer AC over LH. It so much better. Definitely go for AC any day!!!!

Let me be very clear, I believe he is talking about the 'upgrade' from a normal economy seat to an exit row or bulkhead seat (but still in economy). There will be no upgrade from Economy to Executive just because you are being nice (doesn't work that way I'm afraid).

Yup, that's what I mean  . While flying on AC, It is not rocket science to get the upgrade from a regular economy seat to a Preferred Economy class seat if you are very nice and personable- and of course if you ask for it.

Most, if not all airlines, don't specifically offer Preferred seats in J cabin so Preferred seats are only noted in economy class. I was specifically referring to upgrades from regular econo seats to Preferred seats in economy. But thanks RJLover for clarifying
