Delta Opening Up Premium Seats For Everyone?

Tue Sep 21, 2010 4:46 pm

I was just looking through some upcoming itineraries that I have. I notices that middle seats that used to be blocked off for premium members have opened up for general selection. The ones I saw were on the MD88, 763, 752, and 777lr. I am sure they are on others as well. Probably not a bad Idea seeing as the middle seats are undesirable anyways. But an elite booking last minute might want an up front seat in economy if a tight connection is involved.

Middle seats are no longer premium, only the aisle and window.

As a non-elite DL flyer I was moved out of a seat that was formally not premium and is now a premium aisle seat a little farther back in the plane (738). Kinda ticked me off, but what can I do?

Not true for all carriers. AC still considers them as Premium or preferred.

So I'm assuming that these premium seats will now be available for the general public at a premium rate. What AC has done for quite some time now is called these premium seats their preferred seats and during seat selection when you purchase your ticket, you pay an additional fee to choose a preferred seat. My experience has been that most regular economy travellers don't bother with the extra service charge for the premium seats. It's mainly the upper class economy travellers like the occasional business traveller who select these seats so I really don't think much will come from this change for DL. IFF they offer these seats at the same rate as the regular economy seats, well then naturally some problems might arise like sectflyer said with Elites.

Choose another airline to fly on.

You are a customer and you have to spend your dollars where you feel they serve you best. If a company is doing something that you do not like, actively look to replace them. If you can't then you can't, but at least you tried. Be an active consumer. Spend your money where you want to (if you have control of it i.e your company is dictating Delta) and get the best product/service available for your needs.

Trust me. WN can't get into GSP fast enough for me. The university I work for (shouldn't be too hard to figure out) says I have to fly the cheapest (within time reason) fare I can find. Here in the southeast that's usually DL. I can't wait for the chance to fly someone else.

This is just Delta making a change

No, it's just a normal seat, Delta doesn't really have anything where you pay more to get a certain seat, only the premium seats held for medallion members etc.

Assuming that premium seats are the exit row seats, that seems odd that they would now offer these premium seats to the general public at the same rate as a middle seat stuffed way in the back of the plane. How are they going to have benefits for Elites who want an economy premium seat when there are non left because they were already purchased by other econo pax?

Good news to expand premium seating - Delta was way too stingy with this in the past, which was annoying when I'd book a ticket within a few days of departure and would have to hope my upgrade would clear rather than have to sit in a middle seat since Delta only had 4 rows of elite seats.

A good move for elites at Delta to give them more premium seats.
