What I Hate About The Airline I Love/admire

Wed Oct 06, 2010 6:58 am

Many, if not all of us here on A.net, are fans of one or more airlines. However I am sure you can agree with me that even the airlines we love/admire for their service, their product, their approachability, etc. have certain unique characteristics that we are not fond of or even may hate.

As my nick clearly suggests, I admire what Emirates has done since 1985 and closely follow their steps. Now, I will not go into all those things that I admire, as these have been more than analyzed on A.net. I do however hate (yes, HATE) the catering options on EK flights. Despite food being of a good standard, not excellent, but survivable, each and every time I fly with EK I feel like I am travelling on an Indian airline. With all due respect to Indians on this forum and in general, I do not see the logic to always find that my only two options on the menu are Continental and Indian. Where the Continental option is the “safe” option for the majority of travelers with any airline. I have flown and will fly with EK many times to many destinations and whether we are talking Frankfurt, Germany or New York, U.S. I am very disappointed with EK’s menu options. Is it really that difficult to add an Arabic option? How about other Asian, such as Thai or Chinese? The list of possible cuisines is almost endless, but all you can find is Continental and Indian. I certainly hope EK will wake up and offer other options without the need to pre-order special dishes online.

So, there is mine, what is yours?

I would say I admire Lufthansa, they are a really professional airline. But from admiration to love is a step impossible - due to the fact that LH is completely cold, and I miss the warm friendlyness other airlines have - even a FR cabin crew often is more friendly than an LH one.

I have seen meals described as Arabic on the menus of EK flights and Arabic mezze are offered on a regular basis in J and F. Perhaps EK's definition of Arabic meals and your's differ or perhaps you've just been unlucky on the dates that you've flown with them.

Not specific to any particular airline, but I hate touch screens in Y. There is nothing worse than having one's back constantly prodded throughout a flight.

I used to fly regularly between LHR and HAM. Yes, LH was very different to BA: LH was very efficient but not very friendly while BA was the opposite.

Flown domestically in the US much? Those LH crews will seem like angels once you get a 60 year old UA or AA F/A give you a death stare if you god-forbid ask for a whole can of soda or dare interrupt while they are clearly engaged in reading People Magazine while in the galley..

I found the LH crews to be very nice. Sure maybe a bit too professional in how efficient they are in carrying out meal service and what not, but didn't hesitate to get you anything when asked and always cheerful about it. Also LH has some nice scenery in their cabin crews as well..

Favourite Airline: Singapore Airlines (SQ)

What I Love:

- Wonderful cabin crew
- Wonderful food (albeit TG's is nicer)
- Wonderful seats
- Wonderful IFE
- Never had a bad flight with them

What I Hate:

- High prices (price for quality I guess?) in all classes
- Slightly inconsistent product (some planes with old seats, some with new seats, referring to the 77E and 773. Some planes with AVOD and some without. I know they are making changes now)
- Unable to accumulate miles with discounted tickets (some airlines allow 25% or 50% miles to accrue)

That's all for the moment. It's hard to think of things I hate about SQ!
One way I will fly around the world!

What I don't like about CX is their J class herringbone seats. Ok, I'll admit I've never actually tried them, but the thought of sitting on an angle and not being able to easily look out the window bothers me. I like facing forwards when sitting in a vehicle of any sort. I'd rather have forward facing angled lie-flat than herringbone.

What I also don't like is their cabin crew's insistence on shutting window shades. The reason I choose window seats is to have a view outside, I dislike being told to have to close the window shades to artificially darken the cabin when it's daylight outside and I'm wide awake. I'm not sure if it happens with a lot of other airlines - I don't fly often, but I have notice that CX enforce this more often than not. Eyeshades are available on request to those who want to sleep, so what's the point of closing window shades?

The crew can sometimes be inconsistent, but I guess you get that at every airline. It's no secret that SQ are their bitter rivals, but I think CX are trying a bit too hard to be different from them. I think there's no harm in not trying to be so different, but to take the good things about their competitor and implement it into their own fleet. To be honest, sometimes I get the feeling that CX seems to play second fiddle to SQ. Sure, when CX are on the ball, they're as good as anyone, but to my mind at least, SQ are just that little bit better with their seats (especially in J), food, and (arguably) IFE.

This usually correlates with the passenger profile of the flight, and with EK having such a huge presence in the India/Pakistan/Sri Lanka/Bangladesh markets, lots of our flights to and from Europe and the USA carry transit passengers to and from the Sub Continent. If you've flown our flights to South East Asia for example, you'll see other options on the menu - flights to Thailand for example, will usually feature a Thai/Chinese option, to Manila a Filipino option, or Osaka/Narita with a Japanese option. Options for J and F are more comprehensive and feature dishes from all over the world, one of the staples being the Arabic Mezze to start.

That said, I can see how the "creamy chicken korma" main dish or the "tikka masala wrap" off the as you like it menu gets old for the Economy passenger who regularly flies our routes to Europe and the US.

Spot on with this comment sq_ek_freak!

The menu "strategy" makes sense I just hope that EK would bring the world cuisine to all flights/classes. I would love to see a japanese and thai or chinese and italian main menu option on a flight to e.g. LHR.

This is by far my biggest dislike when flying, and its slowly creeping through many airlines. Even LH have now jumped on this bandwaggon. Do they think passengers are like birds, and as soon as it gets dark we will all instantly fall asleep?? I can sort of understand it while flying West-East during Summer months on over-night flights, but why on earth do the INSIST when you are on a daytime flight EU-US??? Most people will only have been up for a few hours, and infact it helps to stay awake to adjust to the new time zone on routes like this.
I have specifically chosen a window to look out of... and i dam well will!!!
I last flew VS 2yrs ago MCO-MAN and i found their approach to this so threatening that i vowed never to fly VS again (plus other issues with VS which i wont go into!)
BA on the other hand, request you do it, but do not physically enforce it...wel done BA! Its not a safety/legal requirement so let it go. Basically the airlines have realised that the more people sleep, the less they want off the Crew (drinks, food etc etc..)
The only airlines which i LIKE, regarding this policy are Charter and Low-cost! They dont give a dam!!

Although it also has to do with passengers wanting to sleep withough sunlight in their faces, I think that for the most part they want you to close the blinds because of how hot it would get if the blinds were left open. I actually very much appreciate this rule, and for those who want to take a peak outside from time to time (like me) they will not kill you if you do it. Furthermore, on airlines that do not mandate you to close your blinds, you will find that the large majority of passengers will close them regardless.

Although this is only a fanboy comment, I hate it that my favorite airline (British Airways) hasn't ordered the 748i!

I admire Asiana, my all time favorite airline. Flown with them a lot, I'm actually an OZ Club Member. The one thing and only one thing I hate about them is that they have to close the shades down on long flights. I understand that people are sleeping but it would be better if they supply eye masks.

Quoting CXB77L (Reply 5):

YESYESYES. There's a reason why I chose a window seat, to get a view. And i want my dang view. I just flew on OZ221/OZ222 and we passed the North Pole but I couldn't really enjoy the view since the FAs insisted the shades to be down since it was very bright. I would open it once in 10 min just to check the view, but it'd probably be way better if they'' just leave it alone.
It's a cultural thing.

When I'm flying over the North Pole, trust me, the window shades will be open. No matter what! It's the most awesome view!!

Depending on where you are in the plane, there can be a lot of reflected glare which could become more than a little uncomfortable. I also suspect, having the shades down makes it easier to see what's on those horrible little screens in the back of the seats. But like you, I also request a window seat because I want to enjoy the view.

I've pretty much settled into being a Southwest fanboy, but there are defintely those few things I wish they did differently.

LUV (pun intended, obviously):
No BS, just a good flight. They don't have the perks of the legacies or even B6/F9/VX etc, but at the same time they don't try and squeeze every penny and genuinley treat their pax well and give them a good flight for a good price (typing that out I realized that actually makes them the Miller High Life of the industry)
The legroom and seats are my favorite among domestics.
The open seating. I used to HATE the "cattle call" but ever since they changed to the number system it makes everything clean and orderly. Everyone else with their "zones" just end up being a crowded mess (especially if one zone is for elites that take up half the plane)

Don't Luv quite so much:
Comparatively limited network. Not a huge deal since they fly where I want to o 90% of the time, but still.
737s. Not that I don't like them, but if given the choice I'd take a DC9/MD80/MD90/717 with no middle seat anyday. Fotunately enough, I can look forward to that soon enough.
They are more than a little responsible for the demise of my former preferred carrier, ATA.

I love Southwest...

Booking with them is a breeze, the prices are fair, and the schedule is fantastic (at least to the places I travel). The operation is smooth, orderly, and the crews are efficient, professional, and quite often down home and entertaining. They also have stayed true to flying respectable sized airplanes.....flying from BDL to ORD on an American Eagle jet that's smaller than the bus that brought me from the park and fly to the terminal is a total joke. Uh...you used to fill 727's and MD-80's AA!!!

The only thing I don't like about them is while the "cattle call" has improved a great deal, you still get the individuals who try to find ways to get aboard first. Though that's not the fault of their own.

NZ for me. I'm not a big fan of the 3-4-3 config on the 777's comming in and they are a bit stingy with airpoints. I don't agree with new new short haul product having a fare structure where you pay extra for food & bags etc etc... too much like an LCC for my liking for a 'legacy' carrier

Qantas:

1) The food is usually not all that great, edible but not much more
2) Their insistence on blocking out vast swathes of the aircraft for all but the most senior frequent flyers. At some point I would like to sit somewhere other than the last 5 rows!

I don't love Southwest, but I guess I like them a lot. That being said, I've got a fair number of gripes...

1. Meta-search tools like kayak might show their flights, but not the price. I HATE that, since I often make dummy bookings for trips I am thinking about. Thank the Mozilla gods for inventing tabbed browsing, or comparison shopping would really suck. It's cool if you don't want to sell tickets on expedia and the like, but all kayak does is link to southwest.com anyway, so I just don't get why they can't show the price.

2. After the new number-boarding system, I HATE the cattle-call even more. I used to have this trick where I would show up to a gate in BNA (where they never have enough seats) and queue up, then everybody else would jump into queue, then I would go sit down and board at the end of A group. I hate it, but I know the open seating gets the plane loaded faster, so I'll live with it and I hope they don't change it.

3. I know ancillary revenue is important, but I HATE priority boarding because of the following anecdote: LAS-MDW diverts back to LAS late at night. Huge queue for re-booking and the agents (who were supposed to be off work by then) are seriously working their butts off to get new tickets issued. (Hats off to them, btw, they did a helluva job.) Then, the woman in front of me, who paid for "priority boardin" gets issued an A40 boarding pass. Still A group, but not A1 like she was "entitled" to. Royal bitch-fit ensued, with over a hundred people who were supposed to be in Chicago still waiting. Offering this service is just inviting this sort of thing.

4. Due to that same flight, I hate that they fly to MDW. The reason for the diversion was that MDW got fogged in and closed. ORD stayed open all night. Used to love MDW when I lived in Hyde Park, but now I live in Rogers Park and going to MDW sucks.

5. While I love the absence of RJs, the nerd inside me hates the lack of aircraft variety. You know it's boring when you get all excited because you boarded a "rare" 735 instead of another 73G!

6. Last but not least, I hate RapidRewards! It's simply too restrictive with the way your credits expire after 24 months (at least they upped it from 12!) and you automatically get a "reward" after accumulating 16 credits, which in turn expires in 12 months. I've had to use rewards on tickets which would otherwise have cost 50 bucks just because they were about to expire, instead of being able to bank them for a longer trip.

Wow that was a long rant... and to think, they're my favorite domestic airline! If I start in on US or UA in a future thread, you guys can just tune me out

Well then... One can only imagine the fit/tantrum many an "elite" throws when, in similar circumstances, he/she loses the first class upgrade to which they are "entitled" with their loss-leader coach fare

I too "luv" WN and never gave serious consideration to DL or US or SY for an upcoming MSP-PHX trip now that WN flies the route...1) can check up to 2 bags without being shook down for $25-60 each way; 2) in the unlikely event my plans should change, I simply apply the full value of my unused ticket to a future flight -- or flights if the new fare is lower -- within 1 year from booking date -- without being fleeced for a $100-150 'administrative fee' on top of any fare difference... even with web-only "Wanna Get Away" fares.

As for what I "hate" about WN... stay tuned...will have to wait and see what my upcoming trip brings...last time I flew with WN (SAN-PHX) was 'way back' when, well... the 73G, sans winglets, operating my flight was still painted in the old livery as was what seemed like ~50% of their fleet. WN's recent addition of MSP-PHX non-stop   has made me so pleased with WN that I am 'blinded' to any of their shortcomings I may have noticed when I last flew with them.

If there is anything negative to say at the moment, it seems that WN does not answer calls to their res centers as quickly as they once did (which was ~immediately).

I don't think you can call any company these days and actually speak to anybody before you've lost a piece of your sanity listening to their dreadful tastes in music.

At least I didn't until today when I called QF, and after I'd pressed 1 for this and 7 for that and keyed in my frequent flyer number, my call got answer right away. I almost fell off my chair with surprise!!!

United Airlines
Great airline that I'll be loyal to when flying within the US but I wish they'd order the 747-8I and do something with that horrid livery they chose since the merger with Continental.

Thai Airways International
My favorite airline in the world but there are few changes I'd like to see (but will never see) is the entire fleet to go back to the previous Landor livery and make the A340-500 a 3-class aircraft.
Would be great to experience Thai Royal First Class non-stop between Bangkok and Los Angeles.
Would be even better if they added San Francisco as a destination.

No kidding... nothing like an airport to bring out the dark side in folks. However, some elites also realize that it is a small perk which is not a given, just a bonus. WN's problem is that they are selling the low boarding number, so the people who feel they are entitled- well, they kind of have a point! While I don't feel it is ever appropriate to hold up a queue for some petty disagreement, this lady should at least get her money back. OTOH, as my steel-hearted girlfriend pointed out... she DID get the A1 number on the flight she just took so she got what she paid for, the fact that it diverted is irrelevant!

I think if WN wants to sell this service, that's fine. I'm never going to pay for it (and I still usually manage an A pass) so it doesn't concern me. When b.s. like this happens and I end up further delayed on an already crappy night, then it becomes a problem for me. The airline needs to have a system in place to account for this type of thing, or they need to not sell it!

Not sure who your favorite was, but mine is Northwest. I really like Delta and I think the merger is positive over all, but I'll always miss the red tails...

My new favorite is US Airways, who I started flying after the HP merger (another airline I miss a great deal!). I love a lot of things about US, including...

1. Their brilliant livery and logo. They have the best corporate image of any airline in the US, in my opinion.
2. Their fleet. I'm an Airbus and Embraer fan and US flies a lot of them!
3. Their hub in PHX is located in one of my favorite cities in the US and a frequent destination of mine.
4. Their focus city in DCA... another one of my favorite places.
5. Quality and reliable service. At the end of the day, this is really what it's all about.
6. Retro jets. No other airline seems to respect their heritage as much as US does.
7. Star Alliance. You can book a flight to nearly anywhere in the world on US.

But there are two things I wish I could change...
1. They have some gaps in their domestic network that need to be filled -- particularly in the midwest and northeast.
2. Their labor situation is less than ideal. I hope they can find a resolution to the pilot's contract issue soon.

Sun Country Airlines

I like:
Minnesota based airline
affordable flights to expensive vacation destinations
young fleet of 737s
cheeseburgers and hot sandwiches offered

I don't like:
baggage fees (like most airlines)
sometimes crazy new routes (like their new focus city in LAN)
limited frequencies (seems like most destinations only have 1-2 flights weekly from MSP)
It ain't no normal MD80 its a Super 80!

1. They have some gaps in their domestic network that need to be filled -- particularly in the midwest and northeast.

BTW: I meant to say in the northWEST.    Obviously US has the northeast pretty well covered.

I am a US fan and preferred member for many years now.

The biggest "issue" I have with them is the fee for booking award travel via phone on partner airlines. I know many airlines also have this fee. My objection is that booking with partners via the website is not an option, so it is a mandatory fee. If I chose to call over doing my own online booking I would not like it, but could understand it. I believe these fees should not apply if the self-booking site does not offer this option.

And an idea that I believe applies to many airlines, if you pay a fee to check a bag and it does not arrive with you on the scheduled flight, I think it should be SOP to refund the bag fee.
I want to live in an old and converted 727...

Delta (by force; Northwest forever):
Bag fees
Boarding passes combined on one

Midwest:
High fares
No more mainline
No more all-signature class
Confusion between the brands
Flying an aeroplane with only a single propeller to keep you in the air. Can you imagine that? -Capt. Picard

Absolutely! I was surprised when I found that this wasn't the case at most (all?) carriers.

I'm surprised you don't like that. I'm always paranoid about losing mine, so keeping track of just one boarding pass is nice. I *think* that if you check in at the airport, you still get an individual boarding pass for each flight, though.

For me, YX died when they introduced Saver Service in the mid-2000s. Unfortunately, the "signature" business model just doesn't work in the era of LCCs, sadly. They, along with Skyway, were unique airlines and I'm proud that they were a part of Wisconsin history!

It's amazing they held on for as long as they did.
I took one of their last remaining 717, 88-seater Signature Series flights over Thanksgiving weekend in 2007.
What a terrific airline they were.
I just picked up their 1:500 scale Herpa Wing last month.

AirTran. I like the reasonable prices and reasonable upgrade charge to business class and I love the 717. What I hate is no matter where I seem to fly them I have either a 30 or 40 min connect time in ATL or 4+ hrs. Seems like there is no middle ground except for a few flight segments. Now I hear SWA is going to remove the biz class after the merger is approved. That sucks.

United:

-no snack in domestic economy to go along with your drink.
-ORD is too cramped for my taste
-need more WiFi

I've admired UA for years and only recently flew on them for the first time. After having to fly Delta most of the time lately, it was a breath of fresh air. I felt like a valued customer from check-in to check-out. There's so many things I like about UA that the "hate" list was hard to build. Next time it's works out, I'm flying UA.

From this side of the Pond, I like BA Cabin crew but find the ground staff a different animal, as if they were taught by another airline. I fly Club & First and find the service on board 98% very good, once on the ground I feel I am a problem asking them to do/get/sort out something for me.

I felt the same about JetBlue.
They have a wonderful flight crew but their ground staff at JFK.....
I remember showing my US Passport when the agent asked for my ID and she said; "What is this?"  Wow!
She flipped through the pages as if it was something she had never seen before.
Granted it was a flight from JFK to OAK which is domestic but I had lost my driver's license on that trip so my passport was my only form of ID.
She pulled me aside and had me go through extra screening.
