Next summer, I will be doing some "backpacking" around Europe for a month and a half or so, and will be using a combination of trains and planes to get around.
I will be on a oneworld RTW ticket, but will be doing nearly, if not all, of my travels within Europe on my own (as opposed to using the oneworld ticket).
Basically, what I'd like to hear are some useful tips for getting the cheapest fares. Obviously, booking early if possible, staying away from weekends/peak times, but are there any other good ideas?
Furthermore, which airlines will likely be the cheapest/most accessible? I assume FR is right up there, but what are some that I might not have thought of?
Some specific destinations I'd like to hit up, that will likely necessitate air travel are Istanbul and Scandinavia. What LCC airlines serve these destinations?
One other place that I may or may not be using my last available segment on my RTW ticket is between LHR-CAI. Given that I basically want to do all of Western Europe, Scandinavia, Istanbul, and Cairo, where would you recommend using that last segment?
Currently, I have a surface segment between LHR-MAD. I am arriving into LHR from MEL on QF, and then leaving out of MAD to go to GRU (hopefully GIG, but LA hasn't loaded any award seats between GIG and SCL yet, and I need to book really, really soon).
As such, I'm trying to determine where I'll be saving the most money in using that last RTW segment. Part of determining that is finding out where I can get to cheaply.
At this point, I don't really have any firm "plan" as far as order in which things are done. All I know is that we'll be meeting my travel companion's girlfriend in Rome at some point during our trip, but when is really up in the air.
Some options I've considered:
-Using last segment on LHR-CAI, then going from CAI-IST, and then IST-FCO. The advantage of this is that I can then keep my Eurail train pass consecutive, rather than having to split it up and buy two separate ones.
-Using last segment on CAI-MAD.
-Using last segment on IST-MAD.
What LCCs serve IST and CAI, and from where?
Sorry, I know this is a lot of info and entirely convoluted, I'm just trying to figure it all out.
Let me know if I can clear anything up.
Thanks in advance!
