More TSA Crap

Thu Oct 21, 2010 10:53 pm

Hello All,

I just got back from a quick business trip to Madison, WI, and encountered something I had never seen before. I went through security at MSN (literally 10 TSA agents standing around and I was the only one going through security at the time), took everything off my person that would set off the metal detectors, and passed through without any alert from the magnetometer. After I pass through, the agent on the other side asked what was the slight bulge in my right pocket. I replied that it was my wallet and he asked me to remove it from my pocket. I did. Then he asked me to open it, so I did...briefly. Then, he proceeded to read what was in my wallet, so I closed it. He gave me this look like he wasn't done, but I put it back in my pocket and moved on without any further incident. Anyone experience anything like this? I'm just guessing that I came across a TSA agent who is making up his own rules and procedures...which seems to be common.

Sounds like a bored agent looking for trouble.

I usually stick my wallet in a side-pocket on my bag and manage to avoid this sort of thing. Guy has absolutely no right to go reading whatever you've got in your wallet. I think your reaction was totally appropriate.

I did not, but a good friend of mine did. It took an FBI agent getting involved to tell the TSA agent and the airport police cop (this was a major station) that the search of the wallet was without valid cause and they had no constitutional right to search his wallet.

Bravo to the FBI for standing up for the Constitutional rights our country has and that the TSA doesn't care for.

Something similar happened to my mother going through U.S. immigration and customs several years ago. The agent pawed through my mother's purse, removed her address book, and proceeded to leaf through her address book page by page. My mother, who is barely over five feet tall and at the time was in her sixties, politely took the address book from the agent and told him he was done.

Exactly my thought when I went through MSN back in July!

It's always a crapshoot with my wallet if I will get called out or not. Most times not, but once in a while they will ask me to take it out. In that case, they glance at it for a millisecond to confirm it is what I said it was (wallet) and say "OK" as long as it didn't set off any metal detectors.

I have noticed there are MANY more TSA agents on a power trip in the smaller city airports then the larger hub cities.
Have you?

Actually, I have. It must be the boredom factor at those places. SFO, any other majors, no problem usually. MSN, SBN, those guys at the regional airports with hours between flights sometimes have nothing better to do than figure out new ways to inconvenience the traveler under the disguise of "security".

Yeah, same here. Personally, I would think of it as the obvious thing to do. Don't the signs even say to take everything out of your pockets? But given the circumstances, I think you did the right thing.

Recently while departing from KONT on a WN flight, I had a boarding pass that I printed at home by using their on-line check in. I handed the Agent my boarding pass, he read it then turned it over to the blank side and stared at it for about 5 seconds before returning it. It seemed like a long time for someone to view a blank page.

My experience has actually been opposite. I have seen plenty of power trips and made-up rules/procedures in SEA, PHX, DEN, ORD and MDW, while I've had consistently friendly and efficient TSA agents in BOI, GEG, BUF, PUW, LWS.

I am flying to MSN in mid-Movember, though. We'll see how much hassle I'm given there.
