Your First Wide-Body International Flight

Sat Oct 30, 2010 3:27 am

An international flight is usually more exciting than a regular domestic flight, chances are you're going to fly on a wide body A/C (A300,A310,A330,A340,A380,B747,B767,B777,DC-10,MD-11 and etc)

So What was your first international flight?

Mine was on December 22, 2007 when I was still 12.

EY 421 : MNL-AUH

A/C Type: Boeing 777-300ER
Seat No: 24A
Departure: 15:45

It was one of the most memorable flights I've ever taken, it was my first time on a wide body jet and it was on the 77W and my seat was next to the GE-90 engines, when our flight took off, it was really really awesome!
It's a cultural thing.

Nope, first widebody was a BW L1011 500 LHR -BGI in 1990 and I was 9.

My very first was some time in November 2001, right after 9/11. Loads were just dead across the entire country so my family and myself nonrev'd to Germany. AA 763 both ways, ORD-FRA and FRA-ORD. I don't really remember much about the flights, though.

My first transoceanic that I remember like yesterday...

20 May 2007
NW27, SFO-NRT
A330-200, N860NW

I was on my way to NRT and then onward to GUM. Took one of the last 747-200's in NWA scheduled service on GUM-NRT.

Sept 2003 My first foreign holiday with friends after finishing school   I was impressed by the space but I thought it looked very dated in & out. They still had the crappy old livery on it, & I didn't like it & thought I was getting on some ancient thing!

Hmmmm, I was in kindergarten, so I was probably about 6 years old. My family and I non-revved DFW-HNL on what would have been an AA 747-100!  1983! Wow!

Nope for me also. My first widebody flight was an AC 763 YYZ-YVR. Flew 763's to YVR twice, an AA 777 MIA-BOS, and A310's several times to Mexico before:

IAD-FRA on United, followed a week later by VIE-ORD on OS.

First widebody was a DL L1011 on MCO-ATL when I was a sophmore in High School so 2001. First international flight I've ever been on was UA 747 IAD-FRA in 2006. That was back when I was working for UA so it was First   In fact, all the international flying I've ever done has been in First or Buisness. Man I miss working for the airlines!

Well, to answer this question, my first international flight was EWR-HAM on a CO 757-200 in October 2006. But that of course wasn't a widebody.

To answer the question in the thread title, my first widebody international flight was two weeks later, FRA-EWR on a CO 767-200. It was originally scheduled as a 767-400, but was later downgraded for some reason.

My first ever widebody flight was a domestic one, the same day as the above flight to HAM. It was IAH-EWR, also a CO 767-200. I found it a little ironic that a domestic leg of that trip was on a widebody while the transatlantic leg was on a narrowbody.

Complete route was PDX-ORD-ATL on UA, then ATL-FRA on WOA for military PCS. The whole trip was madness with delays resulting from post-9/11. Many thanks to the amazing UA check-in agent that wrote something on my boarding pass that helped get me through security easier.

My first widebody international flight is my very first flight:

1 December 1990
SQ B747-300
HKG-SIN

I was 9 years old at the time, and I enjoyed every minute of it. I have flown widebodies far more often than narrowbodies - if I had the choice I'd choose to fly a widebody over a narrowbody any day. For me, narrowbody flights are an exception.

Don't remember much but in 1990 flying NZ AKL-NAN on a B742, return flight was on a B762. Certainly do remember my next WB flight after that on EK from AKL-SYD on a 77W in 2004

mine was:

Air France
July 1984
JFK to CDG
B747 im guessing a -200
Class: Le Club

these were the days when there weren't 15 flights per day (exaggerating). But rather there was a 7:00 pm and a 9:00 pm flight. My father worked for another airline and we lived in Los Angeles, but there was no way I could non rev on the 'then' AF flight from LAX which was a 747 combi, so I opted to fly on the airline my dad worked for to JFK to be able to get on one of these flights. I didn't make the 7 pm one, but was thankfully called for the 900 pm flight and placed in the new "le Club" at that.

I had several TATL flights, all on 707's, until finally my first widebody International was a Swissair 747-200 from Zurich to JFK in 1977.

First widebody flight ever was a TWA 747-100 JFK-ORD in 1970.

Well I'll tell you about the first time that I can remember. I used to fly the DC10, 310, 742 all the time when I was a kid so I don't recall anything of those.

However my first TATL was at 12 years old, in 2001, and I remember it like it was yesterday. We flew on the 747-206BSUD PH-BUO "Missouri" in service with KLM, on AMS-LAX. I got an exit seat with an extremely good view of the wing, I am convinced this picture was taken from the seat I had.

This flight was only 2 months before 9/11 and regulations were very easy, and I got invited to visit the flight deck by one of the cabin crew. Somewhere over the US heartland I visited the 3 man cockpit and the crew were all very nice. The vacation itself was very good and we got flown home on the PH-BFC. PH-BUO is rotting away in CGK according to my latest information, but she will always be my favorite 747 out there.

I had to ask but it was a Boeing 747-100 PanAm from LHR to JFK I was less than one and according to my folks I even had my own seat to sleep in (we were in first class). I am quite angry with myself I can’t remember!

First flight I remember I guess was LHR to JFK on British Airways, on a Boeing 747 was very young remember wondering just how something so big could get off the ground – I also remember wondering where all those people went whom seemed to walk through the door (I would later learn they had turned right at the door, we had gone left).

I still like that the Boeing 747 can make you feel that you’re on a very small aircraft (if sat in the right place).

Okay, I will probably be the oldest reference: a BOAC 747-100 from DTW to LHR (via Boston), August, 1972, with my Dad. That was so long ago, the seating in economy class was 3-4-2. Can you imagine? Also, the audio had a kid's channel that played a silly song entitled "There's a hole in my bucket, dear stewpot, dear stewpot . . . "

I've spent three days walking around that island. I went there to look at puffins... which were late migrating and arrived two weeks after I left. Still, it was an interesting place to explore.

My first widebody flight was LGW-MAH on a Caledonian L1011 in 1996 IIRC. There is an outside chance that it was a Monarch Airlines A300 a few years earlier, but I have no confirmation of that.

First widebody flight was back in 1984 SJU-ATL-LAX (DL L-1011), I was a year old so I can't recall the experience,
My first international widebody flight was on Dec. 14, 2005 between ATL and FRA on a DL 777-200. It was a great trip and I enjoyed every minute of it.

It was the Fall of 1974. AC YVR-YYC-LHR on a 747. I had flown international many times before, but never wide-body. I still remember how spacious the cabin was, with 9-abreast seating in economy. It was 3-4-2 configuration. Even the middle seats in the centre were fairly spacious, and I recall having a fair bit of legroom as well.
Unfortunately, that experience of spaciousness was fairly short-lived. It was a few years later, that they started with 10-abreast seating. I think that by the time CP Air got their 747, it was delivered with 10-abreast in Y.
The inflight entertainment was not what it is today, but still a movie and about 10 music stations. The meal and roominess were a lot better, and given the choice I would take that 70's standard of service without the inflight entertainment offered today. However, I doubt that choice will ever be offered!
Cheers,
Carl

Quoting Viscount724 (Reply 17):
Can't remember my first international widebody flight, but my first widebody flight was on a Pan Am 747-100 LAX-HNL in April 1970, 3 months after Pan Am inaugurated 747 service.

Very early for the 747, Viscount, you were one of the first ones to fly it!

It wasn't international, but my first widebody flight was on a CO DC10-10, IAH-LAX, summer of '74, on a plane like this one:

That flight connected with a UAL 747 at LAX to HNL, on a bird like this one, a 747-122, N4714U at LAX , Apr 1979:

But my first international widebody flight was LGW-EWR on a VS 747-200 in the summer of 1985 -- on a plane like this, but it was shinier:
