Testing My Jacket At The Airport!

Thu Nov 04, 2010 4:59 pm

So, I was going through security at FRA before a flight to DUB this morning and everything went as per usual. However, a lady then came up to me and said "Are these your items, sir?". When I said they were, she explained that they needed to bring me a different room to test my jacket.

When in that room, she seemed to rub some sampling paper or something off the inside of my jacket. She then put the paper card into a machine which gave her some sort of reading. After, she told me I can go ahead.

I didn't see them do this to anyone else.

Was this some sort of a jacket drug test?! Maybe I look like a bit of a stoner or something

Anybody on here know what this was all about? Cheers!

I believe this is to test for explosives residue. The machines are quite sensitive and I think the theory is that if you were handling or constructing some type of explosive that tiny parts of explosive residue would be on your cloths and be able to be detected, and if so you and your luggage would get additional screening.

I've heard exactly the same from someone who regularly works at quarries.

Yup, that's what they are doing. They did this to my laptop after I just finished doing an inventory shift for my airline and I had to handle squibs. Being in full uniform w/ airline badges hanging around my neck and getting onto a flight (positive space) on my own airline, I didn't think they would be testing my laptop but when they pulled it aside to do the test I self disclosed what I was doing all week and it may come back positive. That was a dumb move...they gave me a look like I was ready to blow them up right there and then! I called the Supervisor I was dealing with all week of the airport over and he confirmed to TSA what I was doing all week and what I had touched (which was not only the squibs but various flammable liquids, etc.), they saw all the paperwork in my laptop bag and they went easy on me LOL!

You'd be surprised what household products have explosive making materials in them. I got my laptop swabbed at Manchester, UK. Turns out shampoo has explosives in it.

So that's why some people are bald...

Ohhh Germany... Every bloody time I go through Frankfurt I get this happen to me, I have a feeling that it's because of all the camera equipment I carry (batteries times a million etc...) Then they take you to that pokey little room with the swabs..

Only airport it happens in though I find!

I went through security one time behind a local bagpipe band. Bagpipes in their instrument cases look like... well... pipe bombs. Unfortunately, the TSA screener muttered "oh my God, its a bomb" when he first saw the xray, shortly followed by some other pax in the security line taking a sharp step backwards as a reaction.

Fortunately a simple explanation, the explosive swab, and a good chuckle later, everything was ok. The funny thing is, they did not manually inspect the instruments - just swabbed and when it came out clean, all was well.
The above post is my opinion. Don't like it? Don't read it.
