Cheapest One-way From BKK To PVG (Shanghai)

Tue Nov 09, 2010 9:46 pm

In January I'm going from Bangkok to Shanghai as part of an Asian tour. From Shanghai I'll be going back to USA.

I only need a one-way ticket from BKK to PVG and need to arrive like 4pm-ish, as I'm meeting up with friends.

Thai Airways has the best schedule, but they are ridiculously expensive going one-way - like 530 dollars.
Another option are China Eastern (approx 310 dollars), but it's not really cheap if you ask me. Return is 385 dollars. Shanghai Airlines can't be booked online as far as I know, but they are around 320 dollars one-way.
China Southern has a fare of 274 dollars, but the booking can't be completed for some reason.

Would love to not pay more than 200 dollars as that's what I find a fair price.

Anybody know any tricks or what the best way to get a one-way fare is on this segment?

From your 4pm schedule the TG flight is certainly the best choice. You can try booking for FM through MU's website but I'm unsure if it is possible. Also, try websites like orbitz etc and see if you are able to get any cheap 1-way tickets.

Another way is to fly down to KUL and take AirAsia X KUL-HGH (Hangzhou) and make your own way to PVG (2 hours by car). They have some amazing fares! KUL-STN is around 270USD all inclusive, KUL-OOL is only 76 USD all inclusive! Although you might have to bear with the menial seat pitch for a while (reports say that it's quite good actually). Currently KUL-HGH is running at 138USD and with all perks added in (seat selection, food, luggage) I'd say it should be somewhere around 160-170 USD. Definitely a good choice, and I'm sure you can secure nice fares from BKK-KUL.
One day I will fly around the world!

If you'd give a definite date it would make things a lot easier, but anyway, the cheapest i found for a random day in january meeting your needs the best is on CZ via CAN arriving at 4:20pm. Total price $305 on orbitz. I don't think you'll find anything cheaper.

try amadeus.net.

The cheapest I could find doing a 1-month search in January is around $300:
BKK - CAN - PVG on China Southern arriving around noon but with an overnight stop (there's also an option to arrive at 4:20pm without the need to overnight but its pricier)
BKK - PVG on China Eastern or Shanghai Airlines both arriving early morning

Thanks guys,

The date in question is January 14.

I have tried to book the China Southern itinerary through CAN arriving at 4.20pm. The fare listed on Orbitz and the like is 305 USD, but it is not available once you try to complete the booking.

I have also tried to book it directly through China Southern, where it's supposed to cost 274 USD, but again, you can't complete the booking. I have been trying to call China Southern costumer service, and they just told me the listed fare is sold out. I asked whether it was possible to buy at a higher price (higher booking class), but they told me I had to wait. I would think that a booking system would automatically quote you a higher fare once the cheaper booking classes selles out. Am I missing something or does it work differently in China?

I have two other options. One is Shanghai Airlines, which departs BKK at 2.20am. I can't seem to find a place to book it online, but a chinese travel agent has given me a price of 2075 CNY, which equals around 313 USD.

The other option is to use milage on Thai, but it will cost me 30.000 miles as I can only book a return flight and I have to pay the taxes which adds up to 180 USD. Not a big difference although I will get to be on the flight I want.

Thanks for your contributions.
