45 Minute Connection At PHL

Wed Nov 10, 2010 2:44 am

Hi All,
In a few weeks I have a 45 minute connection in PHL. I realize I'm cutting it close, but its domestic-domestic, so I feel like I have a chance and US Airways allowed me to book the itinerary. I've heard horror stories about PHL, but nothing specific, just "Oh, its a bad airport!" etc.

Can anybody tell me what's in store for me? Will I have to clear security as a connecting pax?

Thanks!

You will not have to re-clear security.

Is the connection mainline-mainline, express-express, or mainline-express (for these purposes, count RW as mainline)? If you are staying on mainline or on express, 45 minutes is probably doable, though as I'm sure you know, PHL can have nasty weather/airfield delays.

Nope.

You'll probably make it. Try to get an aisle seat towards the front on your first leg so you can get in the terminal quickly.

Well, that doesn't mean they should have. US actually has a tendency to allow unrealistic connection times- once due to a reschedule I ended up with a 20-minute UA to US connection at ORD. Idiot call center rep kept telling me it's a "legal connection" and I had to talk to 2 supervisors to get it changed.

You're somewhat protected if you misconnect- if it's not due to weather they'll have to cover your hotel. Don't worry about it too much. If you make it you'll be glad you only spent a few minutes there.

Looks like you are in your early 20s, so I hope you are ready to make a mad dash between gates if need be! I must admit that being a really fit guy has helped me make several tight connections

As a flyer that once had PHL as my home airport and still a regular transit passenger there, 45 minutes is fine. I am not sure why people have such problems making connections at PHL, or if it is exaggeration. I suppose some people freak out if they arrive at the connecting gate and most of the other pax have already boarded - it doesn't necessarily mean you "nearly missed" the flight. And I believe some people get worried since they won't check a bag and if not early to board may not have space in the overhead bin, but that is a different issue than connecting time.

I say it's as easy as exit arriving flight, walk to gate for connection, board, and have a good flight. Even the Express to Mainline with the bus from F to B/C or A can easily be made in 45 minutes.

If you're connecting in or between B and C, which is likely if you're mainline to mainline, 45 minutes should be no problem assuming the inbound isn't delayed (which is common).

If you're coming from regional (often F) to B or C, 45 minutes is probably OK unless the inter-terminal bus driver decides to vanish for a break, which has happened to me a couple of times.

I've never connected from D or E; I think it's better now than it used to be, but I'm not real interested in finding out. I've never once made an inbound connection from A successfully, but that's always been immigration's fault and you are flying domestic.

In my experience, the real problems with PHL start once you've missed a connection. Let's hope you won't have to find out how things are nowadays.

Only a 45 min. connection at PHL?! IF everyone were only so lucky. I avoid PHL like the plague.
