How Many Times Meal Served In A Long Flight?

Fri Nov 12, 2010 9:00 am

Hi!
I didn't have a really long flight before and I want to know, in a long flight (for example UAE- Dubai to Australia - Sydney which is 13h40m flight) how many times the meal served? For this example Departure time is 10:15am in Dubai local time and Arrival is 6:55am Sydney local time. As we know the time goes faster for west to east routes then how they server breakfast, lunch and dinner in this situation?

Different airlines may offer different options depending on destination, duration and time of departure and/ or arrival.

On flights aboard EK between DXB and PER (westbound 11 hours, eastbound 10h 30) in J and Y there have typically been two main meals served, with snacks being available in between. In Y the meal is presented all at once on a tray, while in J individual courses are served separately. In F meals are a la carte on demand - i.e. you eat when and as often as you wish.

The most I've ever had was on Qatar's DOH-GRU-EZE flight. Breakfast, lunch and dinner were served on the DOH-GRU portion (about 15 hours), and then another dinner on the last hop down to EZE (about 2.5 hours). These were by no means small meals either, and there were several generous snack services in between these. On the return just two meals were served on the longer flight, with one on the hop to GRU.

It's usually two full meals. I've done DXB-SYD-DXB on EK and don't recall being hungry. There might have been a mid-flight snack inserted in the middle there. Just did a pair of 12h flights on BA (LHR-SIN, BKK-LHR) and we had hot meals after takeoff and before landing, with noodles, fruit, potato chips, chocolate bars etc laid out in the galleys whenever you felt hungry (or just a bit bored).

You won't starve, even in Y. Enjoy Australia dousteman!

I just flew SFO-HKG on CX in Y. I was served 2 full meals - lunch within 2 hours after takeoff (it was a noon departure) and dinner about 5 hours before landing at HKG in the evening (local time). However, there were snacks available throughout the flight which lasted for almost 15 hours. The snack items were small sandwiches with cheese or ham, apples, crackers, nuts, chocolate bars, etc.

Last year on an OZ flight SFO-ICN (about 12 hours, also noon departure) I also got two full meals but there were no substantial snacks available between meal times - I could only get some packs of pretzels or nuts.

here is what we do on a DXB- SYD as well as DXB - YYZ:

After take off we serve breakfast, then when we start collecting the trays, few of the crew go on break, then after few hours we start a service called: As you like it, which is basically a snack service. this service on the outbound to sydney contains cheese and chicken pizza with a drink, and on the way back, either chicken or vegetarian pie. now on north american flights, the pizza is on both directions. then before landing we serve a hot meal.

I flew EK in November of 09 between SFO and DXB (14:55 flying time on the day I flew). They served a snack (crackers if I recall) on takeoff and then a dinner service, there was a snack item mentioned on the menu for service midway through the flight but it was never served. I'm assuming you could serve yourself in the galley, I was not hungry so I did not go to the back to check. A breakfast service was conducted about 3 to 2 hours before arriving into DXB.

When i've flown CX between BNE-HKG (flight times have varied betwen 8.5 and 9 hrs), in both J and Y we were served two main meals, dinner then breakfast (midnight departures), in J they have an additional snack menu if you want

LOL having said that, on a domestic service with Qantas last month between MEL-BNE (2hrs), i got a hot dinner, three snack services and four glasses of wines! ...and that was in Y! Great service

Ah yes, now I remember why I rarely fly low cost carriers

Last time I flew on BA to/from LAX they only served one full meal after take off and some snack in-between. Then before landing they served a small sandwich and for breakfast only some yogurt with something in the likes of a muffin.

Usually 2 meals.

Recently flew with OZ from JFK-ICN-JFK in Y

OZ 221: 12AM Departure

After Take-Off: Full Dinner (Steak or Bibimbap) Plus Regular Beverage Service

Somewhere over Western Canada/Near Alaska: Sandwich: Ham/Turkey/Tuna IIRC, it's only given to pax who's awake since most of the pax are sleeping.

2 Hours Before Landing: Breakfast (Lasagna or Shrimp w/Rice) Plus Regular Beverage Service

*Snack are available upon request in all classes as well as FAs walked around with beverages throughout the entire length of the flight

OZ 222: 8PM Departure

After Take-Off: Full Dinner (Same Choices)

Mid-Flight: Snack Upon Request + Beverages

2 Hours Before Landing: 2nd Dinner Service (Fish or Ravioli)

It depends on the airline, OZ and most Asian carriers gives you food non-stop.

Other Flights:

EY 421 MNL-AUH 3PM Departure (9hrs): Lunch After Take-Off, Light Snack Before Landing (I was hungry and thirsty by then)
EY 101 AUH-JFK 2AM Departure (12hrs45min): Dinner After Take-Off, Midnight Snack, Breakfast Before Landing.
It's a cultural thing.

You got your reply for EK service

It really varies for airline to airline. On VS I was shocked to get one rather skimpy full meal right after take off from LAX, then a breakfast that didn't consist of a tray service; it was a muffin I believe. And this was on a 10+ hour flight!! I mean on EK we serve a more comprehensive meal on flights to Mumbai which is under 3 hours.

That said, on TG on their LAX-BKK service which is about 17:30 hours, they serve a full dinner after take off, a lunch mid flight (which is another full meal) and a full breakfast before landing. That's the most I've ever been fed on an aircraft, three full meals/tray services. Not even SQ does that on their LAX-SIN run which is marginally longer.
