AC7034 STL-RDU A320 12DEC10

Sun Dec 12, 2010 6:32 am

Just curious as I am not familiar with AC flight numbers, does anybody know why this is operating? It did not appear to be a codeshare. It is also operating at such as late hour. My one guess is this is a Carolina Hurricanes NHL charter.

That would make sense, but the thing is that the Canes are in the middle of a road trip with games in Dallas, Nashville, and St. Louis, followed by Florida and Atlanta. They are probably going back home since they don't play until Wednesday, but obviously, they could not charter AC for this trip as it would be illegal. My guess would be a repositioning flight of some sort.

Is it illegal for a team charter? The flight aware link shows the plane went to Dallas, St.Louis, and Nashville.

Cabotage is. I thought they wouldn't be allowed to charter AC for a domestic flight in the US, unless there is some sort of exception now. A few months ago there was an issue with certain team personnel from a Canadian team only riding on certain segments of an NHL charter throughout the US. Maybe the US and Canadians governments made a deal but I haven't heard about anything like that.

All of that has been worked out and US and Canadian airlines can again fly charters within the two countries and AC 7034 is indeed the Hurricanes charter. The problem was I believe when some passengers were getting on and off between the segments in the US and this is where the complaint was made; now all passengers must remain on the charter and no new passengers can board while the aircraft is in the US. This way it is like one long charter with overnight stops rather than point to point service within the other country so there is no issue with cabotage. The US airlines (like Miami Air who do a lot of NHL teams) also have the same privilege to operate within Canada as long as no one boards or gets off within the country.

AC (Jetz) flies the following US NHL teams:

7019/7020 Anaheim Ducks
7021/7022 Washington Capitals
7023/7024 LA Kings
7025/7026 NJ Devils
7033/7034 Carolina Hurricanes

That is why I questioned it. I didn't know that things were back in good relations between the US and CA. Thanks for the clarification.

Another question. Is Delta still doing NHL charters with the 31C (319 VIP)?

Yes, DL flies the Minnesota Wild and Philadelphia Flyers.

They also occasionally fly the Rangers and Ducks when needed.

That was the problem. Nice to hear it was all resolved.
