Delta.com Schedule: Aircraft Type - How Accurrate?

Wed Dec 15, 2010 6:45 am

Hello,

I will be flying ORD-PHL for a round trip next summer. I want to book with DL to ride the DC9-50. I noticed that I can get on four DC9-50s via DTW, on select flights. This will be a Fri-Tues trip.

Through my research, I found I can book the following for 6/24-6/28 and 7/1-7/5:

  • ORD-DTW - DL 2420 - 7a deptarture
  • DTW-PHL - DL 2062 - 1:59p arrival
  • PHL-DTW - DL 1889 - 2:35p departure
  • DTW-ORD - DL 2467 - 7:52p arrival

I'm eager to book, but I'm concerned the aircraft types will change. (Yes, I know any given flight can change less than 30 days out). But what are the odds of an complete domestic ops update before the summer of 2011? I would appreciate if any of the DL folks - (personnel or followers) could advise on the odds of a network re-shuffle, if I should wait, and for how long.

Last year I booked 4 717s with FL four months out, only to have two flights change times and equipment type with an update that covered FL's entire domestic ops. I would hate to have the same happen here.

I know this is a petty question, but I don't want to miss the opportunity to get on a few DC9-50s.

Regards,

Greg

It's hard, I usually fly san-atl and its always a 757 as scheduled. But for shorter hops like ATL-CHS it's pretty common for my RJ flights to change to another but my MD80 usually doesn't change

PHL and ORD have been long-time DC9 markets from DTW. In fact, I think they were some of the last holdouts to see service with the DC9-30's before they retired. I'd say you're probably safe in booking it. That said, changes always CAN happen, depending on future booking demand - MD88 might show up here or there, seeing DTW these days!

But, again, given that itinerary you're bound to have a DC9 stay on at least one of those flights.

At this point it is very likely it can and will change. The schedule in the system now is currently a default schedule for the summer. They are still working the April-May schedule and haven't done a major upload for the domestic summer schedule yet.

That said, DL frequently changes frequency and aircraft type up to about 90 days out (or even less).

As T-Pac said, ORD and PHL do see a lot of DC-9s, and DTW will continue to have a significant amount of DC-9 flights. The do change CR9, E75, DC-9, MD-88 dependent on aircraft availability, capacity, etc. so you really can't be certain at this point. Odds are that not all 4 will change, but don't be dissapointed if they do.

I've booked two flights on DC9'-50's in the past two months 4-5 days in advance, one PIT/ATL and the other ATL/IND. Both were swapped out for A319's because of maintenance issues. Bummer.

Schedule changes are inevitable, especially this far out. I would almost bet on at least one of those flights getting swapped out for another aircraft simply because DL will shuffle capacity for different markets and aircraft types where they are needed.

That said, I flew ATL-JAN last week and when I booked it two months ago, it was scheduled as an MD-88. A few weeks ago, it was changed to a DC-9-50 just for that one day I was flying, every other day it has been an MD-88 so you never really know what DL is planning for their schedule changes until it actually happens. Sorry it's not the answer you were looking for, but that's the way it goes...

I've noticed there is a nice variety on these legs I'm planning. That is part of the concern however. The DC-9s are only 2-3 times daily most of the year on these routes. They are good markets and I like my odds, but I may not be 4/4.

Thanks for the info, this is what I'm looking for. Can we expect the summer schedule to be uploaded during Q1?

Ouch! That's what I'm trying to avoid. I feel for you.

You're probably right. I'm trying to "minimize the damage." I'll be happy with 3/4 DC-9s.

Hopefully your flights stay DC-9s for you, but don't be surprised to see a change. When I purchased a trip to Puerto Rico in 2009, my CMH-ATL flight went from a 757 to an MD-88 to a 737-700 in the matter of a few months between purchase & travel.

ATL-CHS is usually a D95, but that's a bit far from you
