My First, First Class Ride On A UA 777!

Sat Dec 18, 2010 6:03 pm

So yesterday something happened to me way before I thought it would. I was flying in first class on a newly configured United 777. It was very nice, I was in 2A, I'd prefer to have been in 1A for more privacy, but I'm sad to say the entire cabin (while beautifully designed) didn't feel as exclusive as the nose cone of a 747! So, I thought of UA's future with no 747's and while being on a 787 or A350, just like a 777, you will be in a straight line, in a round tube with a flat bulkhead to look at, "First Class" may never feel as uber exclusive as on the amazing 747.

I don't travel in First ALL the time. Just a few times a year so I still feel the thrill. I wonder if I started a petition for UA to buy 20 748i, they might... But... How many millions of signatures would I need?

The nose of the 747 is indeed freaking amazing!! The first time I flew up front on one I was in row 3, window seat on the FO's side. Fantastic! I worked for Comair at the time and flew CVG-ATL-HNL(Y)-ATL(F)-CVG just for the 747 experience. Have you ever been able to sit upstairs? I did the same HNL run a little while later and was seated upstairs out of ATL. WoW! It was simply amazing. Like it's own little world or a private jet almost. Also last year I was able to fly on the retirement flights of NW's last 747-200 and was able to walk around upstairs. It was something else to be on that famous spiral staircase. I have a great photo of me standing on to remember forever. Is UA definitely phasing out their 744's?

What kind of seats do they have on their 777's? I've flown DL's 777-200 in J and the seats are nothing extraodinary but on the 777LR's they have the lie flats. Flew that to and from TLV, spent 5 hours there and came back. Oh wow was it nice to be able to actually lay all the way down and sleep as if I were in bed.

I haven't been on the nose of the 747 but last summer, I sat on the second cabin (Business Class section) on OZ's 747, twice. I could see the engine blades which is my dream! I can't believe my first ever sight of an engine blade inflight would be on a 747!  It was awesome! Experienced Sunrise, Sunset, Full Day and Full Night on both flights; stunning! The ICN-JFK flight was the best one; we flew near the North Pole (though not exactly) and it was sunrise, so the engine blades were well visible and the beautiful sunrise, plus the 5-star service from Asiana   Best flight ever.
It's a cultural thing.

I personally LOVE the new UA First class seat. It's a private pod that is beautiful in design. First is in the nose cone. My favorite seat is 1K where you have the first 4 windows all to yourself. You can recline just a little as you look out both sides and it's about 60% of what the pilot must see. On take off roll and lift off it's the only real time you get a sense of how FAST you are moving...then you feel and see the nose lift first until you feel like you are on a rocket or space ship as the airport below looks like a toy.
The UA bed seat is huge, longer than most and the seat is very comfortable, sitting up, recline or bed. It isn't Singapore but I think it's the best US product. And the same seat on a 777 lost that 747 magic!
