Emirates - The Best Airline In The World?

Thu Dec 23, 2010 2:29 am

Hi All,

I believe Emirates Airlines is the best airline in the world at the moment.
Especially if you are on their skywards program. The whole experience from start to finish is extraordinary.

It would be nice if you can share you own experiences.

Emirates - The Best Airline In The World?

Thu Dec 23, 2010 2:36 am

Well, according to the 2010 Skytrax World Airline Awards they are #8, behind the likes of OZ, CX, QR, and EY to name a few.

EK definitely does have their pros, but unfortunately they are developing some flaws, in my opinion.

But, to each his own. We all have different flying experiences and preferences.

Sorry, but no airline with 10-abreast Y class seating on 777s will ever be the best airline in the world.

Yes what you say is true.

Can you explain which flaws you are referring to?

And of course we all have our preferences and it would be nice to know your preference and why?

A few negatives from my point of view

- 10 abreast in Y on 777s
- An inconsistent F and J Class product - there are currently several generations of both classes on various a/c
- Cabin Crew not 5-star as they have been in the past and inconsistent service levels (mostly due to expansion)
- F Class is offered, but I'm sure it's rarely sold, at least ex-USA. That's unfortunate, because it's probably used for corporate upgrades and takes up valuable real estate on the a/c

Overall the product is leaps and bounds better than many of their competitors. EK is a fine airline and provides a top notch product for their customers.

Yes, you have raised some valid points.

However, I have been flying with them since 2003 and I have never had any complaints.

Which airline do you prefer?

Emirates is pretty good, but their service is inconsistent, some are excellent and some are horrible. My family has flown with them a couple of times and it was a positive experience.

- Impressive IFE
- Excellent Food
- Service is decent but inconsistent

But I think EK is the most successful airline in the world.

For me, the best would be OZ, based on my experience. But OZ isn't really well known since they dont advertise much.
SQ is definitely on the top. Excellent Product + Excellent and Consistent Service.
It's a cultural thing.

Agreed, ten abreast is a bit tight. The legroom may be fine but it is difficult to eat when seated so close to another passenger. Narrower aisles mean aisle-seat passengers are more likely to be knocked by meal carts and passengers passing by.

This is probably true of most airlines that operate different aircraft and that have taken delivery of aircraft at different times. Some of the aircraft are being retro-fitted while others will not be as EK intend to retire them as newer aircraft are delivered.

Sometimes (not always) the differences can be justified by what routes aircraft are used on, for example a private suite may be appropriate on a long haul overnight flight but less so on a medium haul daytime flight.

Quoting AABB777 (Reply 4):
F Class is offered, but I'm sure it's rarely sold, at least ex-USA.

I have experienced being the only passenger in F on flights between PER and DXB. It felt a bit odd, but when I asked the purser assured me that the cabin is usually busier.

Quoting AABB777 (Reply 4):

I have certainly heard such reports from other passengers but I have been lucky to have received very good service. On two occasions I felt it appropriate to send an email commenting on the service excellence. But I have heard that EK's phenomenal growth, coupled with a high labour turnover, has resulted in changes in performance. This is something that EK will need to address in its staff-training and development.

On this issue, perhaps a member who works for EK can clarify what ongoing training and support cabin staff receive.

Flown their 777-300, and I had no complaints about the seating. I was able to eat normally (though the A380 was easier)

A lot of airlines do have this problem, buy some don't as much as EK does. For example: in the states AA offers a consistent product across their entire widebody fleet (something UA/CO and DL don't). In the GCC QR offers a consistent product - one Biz Class seat on all Boeing 777s and one on the Airbus widebody fleet. In the UK BA offers a consistent product in Business Class, however as we all know the F Class cabin is currently being upgraded.

My preferences are AA in the US, BA in the UK and QR in the GCC. There are also other great product offerings out there, but those are my first choices.

Let me turn this around: what points makes EK the best airline? Why should I choose them over, say, BA or SA?

Compared to BA or SA, EK will probably have a better service, better food and of course, the IFE is the best out there. If you're flying from LHR or MAN, then you could be on the A380, which will be an experience

But you would find 9-abreast much better. Putting one more person in the space of 9 can't help but be less comfortable.

It is a few years since I last flew with BA so I can't comment. But SA can be very hit and miss. My own experience is that on one flight you can have a good crew who will ensure that you have a pleasant flight. On the next you will be lucky if you see the crew at all. Sometimes the crew, while friendly, appears to be directionless and just plain disorganised. It really can be the luck of the draw.

I have never flown SA, but I've flown BA last year, one of their 777-200's. Entertainment was fine, nothing to complain about. Food, nothing to complain about. Legroom: awful. If I won't need something on a 8 hour flight, then it would be knees in my back. This means I felt like a sardina in a can, making my flying experience worse.

That is true, but one thing that matters is legroom. 9-abreast or 10-abreast doesnt matter for me (the matter is getting from point A to point B comfortable, and with EK's 10-abreast 777's I never felt uncomfortable)

I have flown EK couple of times and it left me completely underwhelmed.

The seat (in J) was just awful on the A330 - I could not get my legs under the table. It was also narrower than the BA Y+ seat, and not very comfortable as a bed either.

The food was okay (nothing special) and the crew were a real mix. One American female had no idea what I meant when I asked for a "white Burgandy" (remember, this was in Business Class) and on another sector I had an Australian woman who was - frankly there is no other word for it - a complete b!tch to everybody. The other crew members were pretty good; I particularly remember an Middle Eastern man who was very efficient and helpful.

The lounge in Dubai was excellent, but what a long walk from the lounge to the gate!

The experience of seat, and that nasty female Australian crew member (I have never had a crew member actually snap at me before) have left me looking for other carriers first. I may well fly EK again, but only when there is no other choice.

Definitely not the stuff of "the best airline in the world" I think. I personally would rate AY, CX and BA above EK. (In J anyway, I cannot comment on Y)
I only turn left when boarding aircraft. Well, mostly. All right, sometimes. OH OKAY - rarely.

You departed from terminal 1? From the lounge to the end of T1 is really far...

There are two EK lounges available for passengers in J; one half way along T1 and the other covers a large part of T3. The two lounges are very different, as is to be expected from lounges opened at different times, but it sometimes pays to check which gate you are departing from before deciding on which lounge to visit. Now, if you were travelling in F (P) and you had to depart from the far end of T1, you might have grounds to complain unless you request a buggy.

Yes, I worked that out just as I arrived at my gate, which was right next to the alternate lounge. Pity no one told me - you would have thought that when I checked into the lounge, the reception staff might have indicated that the alternate lounge would be more convenient for my use. I mean, they had my boarding pass so it is not like they would not have known which gate my flight was using.

Oh and one other bugbear: there is no facilities to short term store hand luggage in the lounge. Every other lounge in which I have been around the world offers short term stowage at reception. I asked, they refused. That made shopping out of the question, so I did not spend any money in the airport.
