Let me guess, you work for Emirates?

LOL. My mom's cousin works for EK and somehow she regularly flies on the A380 Destinations and she's fairly new. (LHR, CDG, SYD, AKL, BKK) She says she loves her job! It's quite an adventure, going to different places for free!

She's from the Philippines BTW. A great country with friendly people!

PS: If you're an FA, how does the whole route assignment work? Like, is it random or do you have the choice where to go and etc? Thanks.

Haha is it that obvious?

There's a lot of us out here who love the job, it's an amazing experience and seriously a great bunch of people to fly with. There are some hard realities to deal with living in Dubai and working for EK, but to me the benefits far outweigh the negatives.

Also, if she's exclusively flying those destinations, she is most likely on the A380 fleet which means she flies only with the A380; at EK there are two pools of crew, one who work on the A380 and one who works on what we call main fleet, which is the rest of the fleet. EK gave the option for people on the main fleet to jump over to A380 if we wanted to (we had to apply though) - personally for me I stayed on main fleet because I wanted to maintain the diversity of destinations we have, and also keep my flights to MRU   That said, a lot of people went over to A380 because the destinations are consistently "pleasant" and don't have any turns save for JED - essentially bypassing the hardest flights to do in our network - the midnight Indian subcontinent turns. GRU is a tough one too but I love the layover so it balances out for me. EK also put some new joiners directly on to the A380 pool as well I believe.

She's from the Philippines BTW. A great country with friendly people!

Oh man the Filipino crew have are an awesome, awesome bunch! They are so fun to fly with as well, and are super hard workers and have a really great customer service mindset. On layovers they are a ton of fun to have around as well - they tend to fly in clusters, as in they probably roster or swap together. They call themselves the "Filipino Mafia" I believe haha. I distinctly remember a ridiculous karoke binger in BKK with a bunch of Filipinos, and also a Luanda flight I worked of which about half the crew on the Airbus were Filipinas - was a fun flight.

As for MNL - well it's hands down one of my favorite flights to get and work for a couple of reasons. First off, given that we a good amount of Filipino crew with us, people are always wanting to give up really good flights or even pay up to swap into a Manila. If I do end up working the flight, there usually several Filipinos in the crew, which as I said is always fun. The passengers on our MNL flights are also always a joy to fly with, very courteous and understanding, and just generally great passengers. Laying over in Manila is also so much fun - I LOVE Filipino food, and the shopping is great. It also helps that I lived in Manila for a long time growing up because my parents were expats there, so the Philippines always has a soft spot in my heart. I'm really hoping we start Cebu flights at some point!

PS: If you're an FA, how does the whole route assignment work? Like, is it random or do you have the choice where to go and etc? Thanks.

Well it's a little bit of both - our bidding system essentially works on a 7 month rotational basis, so if in January I am top bid, I am more likely to get what I asked for. If I'm top bid in Jan it means I'll be bottom bid in Feb which is essentially reserve, which means I'm on standby and don't know my flights for the month, and I'm called essentiallly when they need an extra person to crew the flight. Then I work my way back up again to top bid, and with each month passing my chances of getting the flights I want increasing. Now, that's the way it supposed to work in theory. Reality is things change all the time, I might get a great roster to begin with but get switched out to do a bunch of turns, or not get any flights I want even when I'm on top bid. Conversely I might be on reserve but instead get a roster for the month and have it be all good layovers - you just don't know. Sometimes it's a bit infruating because you get flights back to back - there was a month where I got Jakarta three times in a row which meant in the span of three weeks I went there three times. There was also a time that on my top bid month I got nothing that I asked for and all flights were turnarounds. So in the end I guess it's kind of a crap shoot.

A side note is what when you get a roster you can swap with other crew if you want to fly a certain flight so long as it's conensual and it's "legal" as in you don't go over the max hours of duty time for a month and you have at least minimum rest between flights.

Hope that helps!

NZ 176 PER-AKL B763ER
NZ 84 AKL-YVR B744

February
NZ 83 YVR-AKL B744
NZ 175 AKL-PER B763ER

This will be my first time flying NZ. Also, I haven't been on a B763ER or a B744 since January 1996 ... far too long. I can't wait, especially for my first ride in a B747 in just over 15 years.

...

Only have SJU-PHL-SEA-CLT-SJU confirmed on January.

There may be some SJU-?????-SJU later in the summer.

By the way, this might not be the place to discuss it, but what kind of jobs enable people to fly so often?

ROC-ATL MD88

Many times when I fly out of ROC, that MD-88 pulls up to the gate next to us. Puts any CRJ or ERJ to shame!

JFK-ROC E145

Do you have any idea what happened to the CRJs that used to do most of the flights? I heard Comair was dumping their CR1s or something like that, and Pinnacle picked up a few of the trips, but now it's pretty much ALL Chautuaqua.

I'll also most likely be traveling in March some time, for spring break. ROC-NYC-ROC, hopefully with a stop or two along the way at some point.

WOAHHH. That was more than I asked for LOL. Really detailed. Being an FA sounds so cool, especially for EK, where you get to travel to different places all over the world for free and you get paid! But I wouldn't want to deal with rude and unruly passengers, but i guess that's reality.

Thanks for that very detailed response and I'm glad that you like the Philippines a lot!

My next fights as a passenger are purely to fly on the MD11 and F70, so I'm doing this routing over two/three days;

LHR-AMS KL 739
AMS-YUL KL MD11
YUL-ATL DL CRJ700
ATL-AMS DL A333
AMS-BRS KL F70

Which will make me two new airlines, three new aircraft and three new airports, and my 24th and 25th transatlantic flights!

After that, I'm looking at 3-4 PHX-SLC roundtrips each month typically on WN. July looking at SLC-BHX/MAN probably DL, Sept: SLC-NRT-SIN, DL Oct: SLC-LAX-AKL either NZ or QF.

No doubt there will be more.
