UA JFK-LAX 12/30/10 Upgrade To J At Kiosk?

Tue Dec 28, 2010 2:51 pm

Hi Everyone,

Quick question. I'm flying to LA for new years and used 50,000 UA miles to get an economy ticket (yes, I booked it two weeks ago and I was desperate.) My fare code is Y and I'll be flying P.S. (flight 25.) I'm looking at the seat maps for thursday and economy is completely full as well as business but there are 6 open seats in first. Is it possible they would upgrade high ranking elites to first, which would open more seats in business, allowing people to pay for upgrades at check-in? If so, how much would it cost? It's a long flight out there this time of year and I'd be will to spend $200-300 for an upgrade.

Thanks for your help!

Award tickets are not upgradable. I think they would upgrade elites in coach first. Unless you find an agent willing to bend the rules.

Your fare code is most likely XY and not Y though.

Can an agent bend the rules? UA.com says Y not XY (unless "XY" wouldn't show on the website..)

XY should show on the website under your reservation. If it only says Y then that means you paid full fare coach.

I do not know enough about your specifics situation, but if you used miles to purchase the tickets then theoretically you would not be allowed to upgrade. I have heard reports on another site that people have upgraded award tickets before though. It can never hurt to ask..

I should mention I had to pay $325 to buy miles to make it to the 50,000 mark (I had 41,000.) Is that a factor of maybe how "Y" shows up on my ticket?

United is operating an extra section JFK-LAX on the 30th using a B744. Don't know what your flexibility is but maybe trying to stand-by for that flight at 12noon you can land an upgrade into C.

Kinda like the old TWA/Pan Am days with a 747 on a transcon!
