3 Hours To Connect At ICN W/ New Check-in

Tue Dec 28, 2010 5:30 pm

Looking into flight options I come across the following one, albeit on two separate tickets :

Arrival on UA from NRT at 2050h.
Departure on TK to IST at 2355h.

Question is:
Are 3 hours sufficient time to cater for
- arrival to ICN
- clear immigration
- reclaim checked bags
- make new check-in with TK
- clear immigration
- reach my gate ?

Flights would be on two separate tickets/PNRs, so I am not sure (confident) that the PSA at NRT checking me in for my UA-flight to ICN will be able to a) check through my bags through to my final destination (on TK) and b) issue my BPs for my 2 consecutive TK-flights.

Realizing that UA 891 is a tag-on from a TransPac-flight, chances are that the flight arrives late. This only adds to my doubts whether I should book that flight or not.
But they offer the lowest fare for a ICN-NRT-ICN roundtrip by far (DL's timings are out of question), with the runner-up being more than 50 % more expensive (including flights between GMP and HND) ...

The least thing I want to risk, is missing my TK-flight home, so unless I receive multiple confirmations that above mentioned 3-hr connection is safe, I need to look into alternative flights between SEL and TYO.

Comments ?

Yes 3hrs is plenty. ICN while a large airport is pretty efficient and should be a model for more hubs.

Also regardless of being 2-PNR's, they should still be able to interline your bags to TK. Just show them your confirmation.
If you manage that, for check-in you should be able to do that in transit and no need to clear immigration/customs. I don't know who handles TK at ICN, but suspect its Asiana so you can go to their transit desk and ask.

Have a good trip.

I have done a connection in ICN where I had to claim bags and check back in at ICN. If you have to do this, it will depend on your flight arrival. ICN immigration can be slow depending on the number of flights arriving. I have taken as little as 5 minutes and as long as an hour to clear immigration. Also, bag claim can be hit or miss. I have waited on bags almost every time, regardless of how long it took in immigration. If you are flying on a Saturday morning, ICN can be an absolute madhouse with large groups traveling and going through immigration and security. After all of that, it can be done in 3 hours, but you need to check when TK check in closes.

If you can get your bag checked all the way through then you can transit and use the transfer desk on the departure level. Remember to have your TK ticket to go through security to the departure level after arrival.

The connection I am looking into will be on a Friday evening (01-APR-2011).

Overall it looks like I will go for a more secure option of flights from TYO to SEL, allowing more time for the transfer, but at more $$$ involved ...
Thanks all !

Why not book on one PNR? Or would that be more expensive? They should check your bag through since they are both Star Alliance partners, but it's not a 100% chance. It depends on the airline's policy.

Both the UA and TK flights are Asiana codeshares. You could easily book this trip on one Asiana PNR... but again that could be more expensive than separate tickets.

Why not book on one PNR?

The TK-flight is already booked and is routing HAJ - IST - ICN v/v.

The big problem with using 2 separate tickets, assuming they're at highly restricted special fares, is that if you miss the connection for whatever reason (look at the many thousands of passengers who probably had that experience recently in Europe and the USA due to severe winter weather), you are likely to lose your complete fare on the 2nd ticket since most restricted fares are non-refundable.

I think you will be fine with a 3 hr connection with 2 PNRs. When booking the UA flights, make sure your name is the exact same as in the TK itinerary and they should check your bags through. If they do that, then all you have to do is go to a transit desk at ICN.

If you miss the TK flight, I believe the worse thing they will do is charge you a no-show fee and then they will re-book you.

The problem with missing my TK-flight is that the connection to HAJ is not running daily.
ICN - IST is only 5 pw, and timings for IST - HAJ vary, mandating a night stop at IST on certain days of the week.

I will go for a more secure solution for the connection at ICN and allow more time, likely using OZ 103 arriving at 1810h from NRT.
The respective inbound flight at NRT for OZ 103 appears to be OZ 104 from ICN, reducing the risk of delays due to late arrivial of the inbeund aircraft (as could be the case for UA as well as KE 002 after a lenghty voyage inbound).

I think you are being a bit paranoid about the connection, but obviously you have your own comfort factor you need to satisfy.

As I will have to vacate my hotel room in Tokyo anyhow, I either have to kill time at NRT or at ICN, as departure time of TK out of ICN is fixed. In that case I just am balancing time and there are gaps in the flight schedule from NRT to ICN.
If not flying UA (DL operates too late), all other carriers plying that route like KE, OZ, JL and NH have matching fares in Eco; flying in Business Class, OZ undercuts the others on certain flights by about $100, but only on their very own metal.

Another option would be to kill time by deliberately booking a connecting flight from TYO to ICN with HND - MYJ - ICN being on offer on either JL/OZ or NH/OZ, but as my hotel will be in Higashai Ueno, getting to NRT actually is easier than getting to HND (with 2 pieces of luggage to drag) using public transport.
