Y Or J On AA118/34 (LAX-JFK)?

Mon Jan 03, 2011 11:12 pm

I have some BA miles and I thought about spending them on a one-way LAX-JFK flight with AA this coming summer. The Y ticket will cost me 12500miles while the J class ticket will cost me 25000miles. Is J class on AA's 762 worth the extra miles? I will be either taking AA118 (7am-3:25pm) or AA34 (8am-4:35pm). What will the service be like on those morning flights? How about the menu?

Any inputs are appreciated.

As a regular commuter to NYC, I have frequented those flights pretty often over the years.
Food wise in J class you'll have a choice of a hot or cold B-fast item. I'm not into high cholesterol omelettes or pancakes so I choose the cold cereal and fruit plate.

As far as the value, it all depends on what importance you place on your mileage. For me with hundreds and thousands sitting to be used, I'd opt for business, however if you dont have much maybe saving them for something else would be worthwhile.

As to between 118 and 34, I prefer the earlier 118 flight as it means a little less traffic into the city, and also I've noted 118 tend to have less inbound ATC issues to JFK.

Enjoy the trip!

Thanks for the help.

I think I will go ahead and book on J class. How is the load usually on AA118 on weekdays? Also what seat would you recommend?

The flights will be full. Its very rare to see an empty J seat except maybe on the afternoon LA departures.
Seating wise I prefer the middle-2 seats(avoid bulkhead) so I don't have to disturb or deal with anyone getting in or out.

Enjoy the trip.

Thanks for the info.

I picked seat 8J as I want a window seat.
