Looking For Travel Inspiration

Sun Jan 16, 2011 3:30 pm

Hi all,

I have a couple of days off at the beginning of February and I'm looking for inspiration on where I can travel to. I'm limited to travelling on BA as I am an employee travelling on a free ticket. I will be leaving on Tuesday 01st February and need to be back in the UK on Friday 04th February and just cant decide where to go.

I'd prefer to travel West as it maximises my time at the destination. So, where would you recommend? Which city is the one that stands out for you? What is there to do there?
As I say, I'm looking for inspiration and where better to ask than a website where people are constantly travelling and always willing to offer opinions.

I look forward to replies and who knows, I might even wrtie a TR about it.

cheers

Lee

Flying out to the U.S. on Tuesday would give you only 2 night stay at your destination, as your return flight will be a overnight flight ...

Facing this, you either are limited to the U.S. east coast - or you stay in Europe.
What about a city break to Lisbon ? Does BA fly to Porto (OPO) ?

I'm quite happy with a two night stay in the US. Being the aviation geek I am, the best part of the trip for me will probably be the flights   I have aso been known to travel to the east coast for 1 night before hehe.

BA doesnt fly to OPO any longer, it stopped a couple of years ago and was operated from LGW. Lisbon does sound interesting but I've got Club World priority so would prefer the Longhaul travel.

Would the jet lag be a killer if I went West Coast? I've never been to that side of the states before but would probably leave it until I have more time anyway

No, especially if you'd keep your body on GMT by getting up early and go to sleep early.
Spotting at LAX could be one option, the other could be a city visit to the Bay Area.
If you like to gamble, why not connect at LAX for LAS, then return flying LAS - SFO (or anything else) ?

The outbound journey (to the West Coast) is no problem but I usually get affected by jet lag for a couple of days (2-3) when returning home.

As you will be flying in J I would head to the West Coast. For instance you can fly to LAX on BA279 with a 1pm arrival and depart on BA268 at 8.30pm on the 3rd (you will arrive on the 4th at about 3pm).

If you are looking at East Coast try BOS. Much smaller than NYC and still plenty to do and see (especially if your are interested in history). It is easy to walk around the city center and there is always something happening around Quincy Market. Another option is ORD. Hotels around the airport are half the price the ones downtown and only about 45 min. ride on CTA Blue Line (subway) for only $2.75. You can get a two day pass for unlimited travel on any subway line or a bus. Great restaurants and apart from the busy touristy downtown and Michigan Avenue, there are plenty of trendy neighborhoods with great restaurants and local bars.
If your interests are a bit into architecture Chicago is the place to be with the first skyscraper and world famous designs (architectural foundation has daily walking, but and boat tours).
Another option is D.C., with clean subway and plenty of museums some still with free admission (my fav - National Gallery, Newseum and Spy Museum).

This is something I had thought about. I was going to fly into LAS and the drive to LAX on the 03rd to fly home that evening. I was even thinking about taking my first flight on an Mad Dog on AA.

If I just go to the West Coast I would probably head to SFO as its somewhere I've wanted to visit for quite a while.

BOS is somewhere I've been wanting to go to for quite some time and ORD also has the 773 operating there which is quite tempting. I may be visiting ORD in June so I don't want to go twice in 5 months but I'm looking forward to my visit later this year.

So many choices and so many different things to take into consideration.
Has anyone been to IAH or DFW? Those are another two cities I wold like to visit

The airports ? Yes.
The cities itself ? Dallas: No. Houston: Briefly, but I was not impressed.

You are not really considering to fly to Boston to explore the city early February, are you ? Save this for some warmer month (the same goes for The Windy City).

Forget about driving from Las Vegas to LAX and flying out of LAX the same day. Depending on traffic, you should allow 5 to 7 hours for the drive alone with no peace of mind as you constantly will think about missing your flight home.
Either drive the day before and allow time for spotting at LAX prior to surrendering your rental car on the 3rd or fly from LAS to LAX (or SFO or any other suitable place).

I have been tempted in the past but not on this trip. A friend of mine flew non-rev to HKG, arrived at 1600 and left that same night hehe

Given the dates you have given this seems like a easy choice to me. MIA!   Get in Tuesday have Tuesday and Wednesday night and leave Thursday Night. Good weather, beaches and good night life.

Or you can go to an east coast city that has a day time departure to LHR. So I think IAD, JFK or ORD might be a few others. But it will be cold.

I've suggested it before and I'll suggest it again: Cape Town
Due south so no jet lag, BA overnight flights both ways, and it's summer down there... Beatutiful scenery in the city, fantastic food, idea for a few days in the sun.

It depends what you want. If you want warm weather and beach go to MIA or CPT. If you want mild weather go to LAX, LAS or SFO. If you don't mind cold weather go to JFK/EWR, BOS, IAD or PHL.

With BA you really can go to prob any major city in the US NONSTOP from LHR. Or go to YYZ or YVR or YYC. I think Canada must be cool as well, although it is cold now.

I agree LAX888. My renewed vote is for Vancouver. It deserves at least two weeks, but 3 nights is acceptable!
