Layover At AMS For 3h From 6.30AM-9.30AM

Mon Jan 17, 2011 10:30 am

Hi all

I will be having a layover in AMS arriving on CX from HKG and departing to ZRH with LX. I guess I will have to transit from the Non-Shengen to the Shengen area. I have heard many horror stories that this can take a long time in the morning? How long do I need to reckon for this? Also what can one do in the Shengen area? I can access the Servisair Lounge which LX uses but am not sure if it is any good. Also I heard that if you fly in C or F you can use the priority lane at the security check points?

Any help, inputs or suggestions are welcome.   thanks a lot!

I wouldn't worry too much... shouldn't take more then 15-20 minutes... feels like a life time though if you are in a hurry.
If you have boarding passes and you would be allowed in Schengen , if the airside Non-Schengen->Schengen gate is a total messyou can even consider by going landside and then return to the Schengen gates, but again, you should be fine.
Indeed there are priority lanes but I am not sure about the airside checkpoint.

I have not come across any such thing yet when crossing from non-Schengen to Schengen hall. Usually it is just a (more or less) big mass of people waiting in front of immigration with security check immediately behind them being the bottleneck.

I second MEA-707's recommendation to take the detour via landside.
This also enables you to shop for food and/or drinks (if in need) in a proper supermarket, located across from Burger King in the public hall dubbed Schiphol Plaza.
Some typical Dutch Liquorice make for very good presents !

Do not be fooled that you are safe once on the far side of security control. You still can be 20 minutes walk away from your departure gate !
However, with 3 hours to make the connection, there is nothing to worry.
Just do not hang around in the non-Schengen hall for too long. If start the immkigration/security control process about 1 hour prior to departure of your LX-flight you should be fine.

ok thanks MEA-707 and HT.

That's good to know. So what can you do in the Non-Shengen hall? Is it nicer?
Yes I might clear immigration and enter the Netherlands for the first time!   Yes I will make sure that I won't miss my flight. I heard that you need to walk a lot at Schiphol.

Thanks again for your replies!

'landside' is basically a shopping mall, I even have friends who go shopping there while not taking a flight or seeing someone off. Like HT said there is a pretty good supermarket, there's also a DC-9 forward fuselage and cockpit (an ex TWA bird in new KLM colours). On the other hand I am not sure if it's a very enjoyable experience in the early morning. You might just go there if you have time or want to go outside for a while.
Indeed Schiphol has become stretched out but someone healthy should be able to walk from one end to the other in 15 minutes.

That lounge is very poor. Opens from 6am. No sandwiches for example. Only some crisps and drinks. Limited seating, lounge is shared with e.g. LH (several departures around that time, so can be busy). I found no newspapers last Saturday during my visit. Internet is not for free in this lounge.

AMS offers 2x 30 minutes free WiFi now to all passengers in transit. You'll find the information on your arrival at some information desk.

3 hours, should be plenty of time to transfer, and grab the Eggs XXL at Cafe Amsterdam on the mezzanine above the 'lounge' between concourse F and G. I always take a longer connection in AMS to get the breakfast and hit the duty free!

Good to know. In this case I prob won't waste my time and visit that lounge. I kinda expected to hear something like that. Usually LH/LX are not really famous for having good lounges. Even at their hubs they are just barely ok. Also Servisair is not famous for great lounges.

Yes, that was exactly my thought...I think transiting in the morning is the worst, even in a great airport. Also I am kinda dreading the 3h layover but can't help it since I most likely won't make the first LX flight at 7AM since I am arriving at 6.20AM from HK. Also I was looking at the map of Schiphol and it seems that I must walk quite a bit from Arrival 3 to Departure 1 and if I am flying from the B gates it looks like at least an ordeal of 30-60min depending on immigration/security.

Ok well I am connecting to a Schengen flight so I am not sure if I should really stay in the Non-Schengen area for too long. How is the food etc in the Schengen area? Anything good you all can recommend? No fast food options though
