Weight Restrictions On US-Australia Flights

Hello Everyone,

So I am planning a quick getaway to OZ in early March, do DL or QF flights usually go out with a weight restriction ot of LAX or SFO? I have heard this is a common ocurrence on UAL flights but I'm not sure if this is the case for the 777LR delta uses or the QF 747ER. Thank you all in adavnce for the information.

Flights between the US and Australia have some of the most liberal luggage allowances in the world. I fly the route all the time and have always found the rule to be the same - you can check for free up 2 bags of 50lbs each (or 23kg each ex Australia). That said, I've flown the route on QF, NZ and DL, never UA. But I've done it on both the 777 and 747, and the aircraft type hasn't affected the rule. I would've thought the rule would be the same with UA.

I heard once that the reason for the generous allowances is because very little freight (relatively speaking) is carried between Australia and the US, leaving the cargo holds free for more baggage. Not sure if this is true but it sounds reasonable.

as long as QF or any of them dont ask you to purchase another ticket due to your weight or girth, you should be a ok

I don't think that is the issue at hand here. The question was referring more to restricted boarding of pax for weight reasons.

For us a little further North... I don't recall seeing our (AC) 77L go weight restricted ex YVR. I have seen it restricted on a couple of occasions it was upgauged to a 77W, but that might have been due to more seats added, but no extra FAs called up (so they block pax at the capacity) versus a weight restriction.

Is anyone here on Anet staff with QF? I wanted to try the A390 out of LAX on 03/02/2011 (QF12) and wanted to know if it was even an option to try and nonrev on the flight. The DL 777LR is also on my most to do list, but I want to try the A380.

I'm not QF staff but i have read the posts somewhere here or other aviation site few years ago. It's NOT THAT EASY to get on Qantas A380s and 747s as it's the most profitable route - between USA and Australia. Some guys here have tried that before but no luck or have to wait for the next days and so on. I am not 100% sure about it. Good luck with that! Maybe Qantas won't allow to have nonrev pax to Australia.

From what I understand is that the DL flight has a lot of cargo between LAX-SYD

The 747-400 will take weight penalties when SYD has bad weather and the airplane has to carry enough fuel for MEL as an alternate. This can happen a little more often than you'd think since SYD gets limited to CAT I operations which means it does not take that many or the possibility of morning fog to require the extra fuel. The higher MTOW 747-400ER with the extra 20K lbs of payload available is just enough to make MEL with no weight restrictions, so if it is used on a flight to SYD, there will not be weight restrictions at all even if there is bad weather.

If the weather is good, planes usually do not take weight restrictions. With a full load of pax, and cargo the airplanes will be going out at MTOW so it can get tight as there is not a lot of extra margin. However with an 80% load factor, there are no problems.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!
