Most Radical Livery Changes

Tue Feb 15, 2011 7:41 pm

With the great love/hate fest going on over the 748i paint scheme, it got me to thinking about airlines that made major livery changes that completely changed the look of their planes. A couple that come to mind are UA's gray and blue after the predominantly white with red/orange stripe, CO going with the globe on a blue background on their tails after the "meatball" on gold and NW's "bowling shoe" livery after the mostly bare silver scheme. I'm sure there were others, these are just some fairly graphic examples.

When America West went from the medium blue and dark red trim to the greenish-turquoise and orange trim, along with the bolder graphics.

I think the most dramatic of all changes was Braniff's decision to change from the Charles Beard/"El Dorado" look to the Alexander Girard/"Jelly Bean" look in 1965. One might suggest that this change brought about all subsequent livery modernizations. In one sweep Braniff completely remade it's image from a rather solid but stodgy player into a splashy, glamorous organization that was ultimately better at promotion than actual service.

Alia to Royal Jordanian in the mid-to-late 80's. First time I saw the Royal Jordanian 747 parked at the JFK international terminal all decked out in its new grey, gold and red livery I was amazed at how forward looking it was for that time period.

Avianca has had quite a history with livery changes.

First, the original and beautiful red and white:

Then the horrible gray Alianza Summa livery when they merged with VX (Aces):

Each change has been quite a departure from the previous design. I know that the change from the classic "Widget" livery to the livery introduced in 1997 (AKA the Ron Allen livery) was quite a departure, but the change to the "Deltaflot/Wavy Gravy" livery was a huge departure, especially since there was still a number of a/c flying around in the "Widget" livery at the time (The Ron Allen livery was short-lived), and even the tweak to the "widget" was surprising and eventually abandoned and the older widget was brought back. By the time we all got somewhat used to the Delta livery, they come up with the new one to reflect a new Delta once they emerged from bankruptcy, and it too was a radical change since Delta's iconic "widget" logo was turned on its' side (figuratively and literally).

IMHO, the new PLUNA livery is one of the best out there. Probably not appropriate for a legacy carrier like LH, BA, AF etc. but perfect for a nice little airline.

Actually, that livery change occurred 4 years before (1975) AL changed their name in 1979 to US.

As a matter of fact, planes that still wore the older 'wedge' livery at the time of the name change were the first planes to be wear the bare metal scheme which became US' first official scheme:
