Greatest Aviation Movie Ever?

Wed Feb 16, 2011 4:39 pm

Just last night I finished watching "12 O'clock High" (Gregory Peck - 1949 - B&W). Available on NetFlix. I try and watch it once every 5 years or so. I find the movie incredibly inspiring, very dramatic, historically significient and accurate, well produced and the story line is as close to accurate as can be - in my opinion. I would be interested in hearing some a.netters views on the film AND other opinions of the greatest aviation movie ever?

Forget accuracy, intrigue, cinematic genius, significance, drama....

I would have to go for Airplane!!! Comedic genius!!

"We have to get this man to a hospital!"

"A hospital? What is it?"

"It's a building with patients but that's not important!"

Classic!!

The movie that inspired "Airplane", "Zero Hour"

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0051221/

In a bit of a twist one of the writers of Zero Hour, was Airport's author, Arthur Hailey. Most people incorrectly believe that Airplane is a spoof of Airport.

Do yourself a favor, watch these movies back-to-back, it's a riot!

Good question, tough call IMO.

Aero Space-
"The Right Stuff"

Military-
"Strategic Air Command"

Commericial-This is real tough one for me
"The Aviator" has a lot of history in it, albeit Hollywood-ised

Comedy-
"Airplane" is there another choice?

Obviously "Soul Plane" tops them all but we don't even need to talk about that one

I am an avid lover of Mystery Science Theater 3000, so when I found out that there was a made-for-TV movie about airports that they riffed, it made my day. Thus, 1970's San Francisco International ranks up there for me, with all the made-for-TV corniness, pretty good aircraft/airport scenes and of course the treatment from Mike, Crow and Tom.

"Airport" filmed at Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport late 1969 early 1970. IIRC released in 1971. Staring Dean Martin, Burt Lancaster, George Kennedy and the Boeing 707. They used a Northwest Airlines 707-320.

For me, it has to be "Airport."

However, "Zero Hour," "The High and the Mighty" and "Airplane" can't be ignored.

Those two would be near the top of my list.

Excerpt from "Strategic Air Command" (released 56 years ago, 1955). The title of the Youtube video is incorrect as the B-52G model didn't go into service until 1959. I think those are B-52Bs:

Snakes on a Plane (Just kidding, but the kid that flew the plane at the end was pretty funny).

For me its: The High and the Mighty with John Wayne and Robert Stack.

I also liked Passenger 57 due to extensive footage of the L1011 and Elizabeth Hurley.

As far as an entertaining and exciting airport scene I should have mentioned Bullitt (Steve McQueen, 1968 ). PanAm 707 taxing to take off at SFO.

Funny you mentioned Tora, Tora, Tora. I was in that movie! It was filmed in Hawaii. We were pulling into Pearl after transiting from Vietnam. The attack on Pearl Harbor was being filmed and there were actual Zeros buzzing far overhead. Word was passed on my ship that we might be in the movie. We could actually see explosions on the beach. If one looks closly you can see ships in the harbor. The USS Fox (DLG-33) is one of them. My only claim to fame!

Great flick (Big John Wayne fan, here). Let's not forget "Island In The Sky" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0045919/ , another Wayne/Wellman aviation flick. If you love the DC-3/C-47, get the DVD, you'll love this movie.

Yep, sit down with a bowl of popcorn and prepare for an evening of chuckles. The funny thing is that "Zero" is a drama, but when viewed in the context of Airplane, it's a scream.

While not a great aviation film, the Chuck Heston flick, "Skyjack" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0069278/ is worth viewing. I dig the F-100s filling in for MiG 21s and Soviet soldiers armed with M-16s, never mind the horrible editing (check out the scenes as the plane is approaching ANC, as it seems if ol' Chuck can't decide whether he wants his gear up or down). Still, it's a fun flick to kill a rainy afternoon.

I think some mention should be made of Dr. Strangelove; I know it's not strictly speaking an aviation movie, but it's fair to say that aircraft (and the inability to recall them) did play quite a role. It was reported that the USAF was quite shocked at how accurate the portrayal of the B52 cockpit was at the time. It's always been a favourite of mine (the movie, not the B-52!).

And of course, I have to say Airplane, because really, it's impossible to watch Airport without thinking of Airplane!

First movie that comes to mind is United 93.

Minus one exterior shot, the thing is near perfect for aviation accuracy. It's also a very moving film. Very well done.

I've read the original book, and tho' melodramatic, it intrigued me. Then, knowing of the Comet connection, and the technical background of the author makes it even more interesting.

Airport's one of my all-time favorite movies, and Joe Patroni was one of my heroes growing up. I do have two slight corrections to make, though...as I understand it, the 707 used in the film was actually leased from the Flying Tiger Line (N324F). Also, as I understand it (wasn't alive yet when it happened, so I could be mistaken), the film was released in 1970.

Broke my heart when I read Burt Lancaster's take on the film, calling it "the worst piece of junk ever made"...

Fate is the Hunter was a decent movie, but if you ever get a chance to read it, the book was PHENOMENAL!! I still need to see The High and the Mighty...and, of aviation movies, Airplane! comes in as a close second to me!

It was a Flying Tigers 707.

I love Airport, but it is The Right Stuff that made me fall in love with aviation. I saw it in the theater with my dad when it came out and I loved it and I still do.

Other favorites are:
High and the Mighty
12 O'clock High
One of Our Aircraft is missing (not that much flying, but the bailed out aircrew has to escape back to England)
Island in the Sky
The Hunters
Airport '75

I don't like the other Airport movies. Superfly and I have to agree to disagree on that one.

It isn't a aviation themed film, but "Hell up in Harlem" has some great TWA action in it.

There are two episodes of Adam 12 ('72 or '73 season I think) where Malloy and Reed are filling in for some vacationing cops at LAX. There is lots of great shots of LAX and some cool aircraft moving in the background. One of the episodes they tail a drug mule down the passenger pickup area and you can see all the signs for airlines long gone, plus many non US carriers. In that same episode there is a scene at a TWA gate and there is lots of cool signage.

There is also an episode of the A Team where a airliner gets hijacked and there is lots of ground and air shots of TWA L1011s and 747-100s.

"Always".

Though it is primarily a romance movie, it has some great aerial scenes with the water bombers.
