Poll: Do You Poop On The Plane? :)

Tue Feb 22, 2011 1:23 am

Time for a fun poll !!

After reading the intriguing and in some cases amusing quotes (below) from this thread, which was on a different topic, I thought it would be interesting to share opinions of why you will, or will not take a dump on the 37,000 foot throne. Aside from the quotes, I guess I should state my own opinion: I have had no problem with this on several flights. In fact, I have found most airplane lavatories to be much cleaner than the airport bathrooms, and usually have better toilet paper too.  When I find the toilets in the airport to be a mess, I will wait to use the toilet on the airplane. Something to do during the flight anyway...

Quoting travelavnut:
I still love aviation, the wonder of it, I still have those small moments when I'm on the toilet in an airplane and it just amazes me that I'm taking a dump while going at near trans-sonic speeds high in the troposphere
Quoting Coal:
You take a dump on the plane? I have to have a major case of the runs to take a dump on a a/c toilet, even in F!
Quoting travelavnut:
On a long haul flight which is not full and the toilets are clean? No problem whatsoever, when you gotta go, you gotta go.
Quoting CHRISBA777ER:
I'm with Coal on that one. Pooing on planes is nasty. Get it out of your system before you fly. I've had to go into a toilet after someone who had been for a crap too many times and thats just nasty. I'd hate the idea that anyone would be queuing up to go in after me and have to live with it. Urgh. I am 99% sure I've never had a poo on a plane ever in my life and thats in 323 flights including some very, very long ones. (17 hours DOH-IAH is prob the longest and I didnt even then, and the cabin only had a dozen or so other pax!).
Quoting falstaff:
I do all the time.... It isn't any nastier than taking a dump at the airport. I would say more people crap at the airport than in the air. The only thing I don't like about using the john on the plane is that I know other people are waiting and I need to hurry up, so I can't relax and read my newspaper.

A throne is a throne, so long as it's clean, I don't see what the problem is. Give me a choice of sitting in my bathroom looking around at the familiar furniture, or sitting at 40,000ft looking out at a shed load of awesome clouds and that deep blue infinity above.... then I know which I'd take.

As each is left to define his or her own hygienic standards, I look at it as a matter of courtesy to other passengers. The mere thought leaving the washroom knowing there will be someone outside who will have to endure a less pleasent visit to the loo would be enough for me to refrain from doing it.
Personally, it is NO because of lacking hygiene and discoustesy! Do what you have to do at home.

It depends on whether I need to or not. It is more likely on a long haul flight like PER - DXB than PER - SIN or PER - SYD as the former is 11 hours, while the latter are about 5 hours.

Keeping the toilets clean is among the cabin crew's duties and so far I have had no grounds for complaint. Depending on the route, you may get a minority of passengers who are less considerate than others but most seem to clean up as best they can afterwards. The only real downside is that most aircraft toilets are a bit cramped, even in F/J.

General access toilets at airports can be less hygienic but it all comes down to how frequently they are cleaned. Toilets in the lounge tend to be cleaner and more pleasantly outfitted.

I go if I have to go, it´s not like a goal of mine one way or the other. If I find a toilette that is too dirty to my taste I go look for another one. I seldom fly Y though, so except on the airlines where C is too big, I almost never have to look around for a clean toilette.

Taking a dump on LH F 744 is a completely different story though, because there is a window above the toilete, behind it.

So I suppose going to while in the ground is not an option but it does add aeronautical prestige to the gastro-intestinal maneuver.

If I gotta go I gotta go ... better to poop and enjoy the rest of the flight instead of pinching it in and racing off the plane to the nearest WC ...

But I do try to go before departure though.

Funny how shy many people are on the subject! Many want to read the opinions of others, but don't share theirs.

Everyone has an opinion, yours is welcome in this poll too!

If you're spending 23, 24 hours travelling from LHR to SYD and your "movement" is not timed with the SIN/BKK/HKG stopover, then it is inevitable, I am afraid.

Otherwise, no, I try to avoid use of the lavatories on aircraft. They are generally not very pleasant places to be.
I only turn left when boarding aircraft. Well, mostly. All right, sometimes. OH OKAY - rarely.

No problem to use the lav' for its intended purpose.
Only downside is its limited size / space available. Worst (= smallest) I have had on a long haul flight was the aft lav' on PrivatAir´s BBJ flying between AMS and IAH. Hardly any space to move in ...

Why not? If you need to go, you need to go. It's no different from any other public convenience with a restriced use, eg. in a restaurant or on a train. If anything, it's better, as it gets cleaned more often. Just don't go in barefoot!

Haha well my stance on this subject is already pretty clear   But I want to clarify that I'm not a serial-plane-pooper, some people might have gotten the impression that I actually enjoy going number 2 in an airplane. I don't. But you don't always control the calls that nature make. And if the occasion does arise I like to combine the vile act of actually using a toilet the way it was intended with some philosophical thoughts concerning incedible height, speed and a act that is as old as humanity.

Don't forget people, we used to squat in the bushes, now we sit on a flying throne...let me repeat that; A FLYING THRONE!

While that is a good point if I have to go, and I don't, my body starts producing gas in copious amounts. This is not really a courtesy to my seat neighbours. I don't like using a smelly toilet, but hey, it's a freaking toilet!

I don't for a few reasons:

1. Usually there is uncleaned piss all over the seat from various passengers
2. Long lines of passengers waiting to use the bathroom -- I don't feel comfortable holding them up for a poop
3. Possible turbulence while in the bathroom

So between all those reasons I always do it before I board or after I land.

Isn't that why sterile seat covers are offered on reputable airlines? The same as there are in public toilets in many airports around the world?

Quoting TOMMY767 (Reply 12):

Unless you can go before departing for the airport, and even more in transit, the same may apply at airports on route.

Quoting TOMMY767 (Reply 12):

That might be a problem but as you are sitting down and ther poo will not usually fly up it shouldn't be too much of a problem, despite the lack of seatbelts.

My answer is a resounding no. Of course, necessity might drive my to do so, one day, but taking a dump on a plane is not high on my to-do list, you see. In fact, neither is taking a dump in the airport. In 10 years of travels, that only happened once, in a ATL Crown Club (Terminal E), circa 2003. I much prefer to do so at home.

Enough details for you?

I try to go before the flight, but not because I have a problem with pooping on the plane. It's because there's nothing worse than being stuck in your seat with the seatbelt sign on when you're already prairie doggin it. The same applies for using the lav before landing on long flights, it sucks having to pinch it when standing in an immigration line or something desperate to get to a toilet.

When nature calls one has to answer, wherever one happens to be at the time! That said, I believe that in all my years of flying, the only time I've ever done anything more than a quick pee on a plane was on a flight from LHR to NRT. It wasn't the relaxed affair that I usually prefer (although I did consider stuffing a copy of the inflight mag up my t-shirt before heading to the back of the plane), but I don't really see what the issue is with "sitting down" on an aircraft toilet. Granted I wouldn't have given the thought houseroom on my AI flight LHR-JFK in 1988 (I'll spare you the details as to why!), but even with a lack of proper seat covers, a few strategically placed sheets of toilet paper can work wonders!

I try to avoid pooping in any public place, including the facilities in my office building. And I always try to tend to my personal business before a flight. Having said that, however, there are times when nature calls and you have no other choice.

I still maintain that having a poop in the quiet of your own restroom and in the privacy of your own home is a sacred experience!

Hey, when you gotta go, you gotta go.

Generally, I take care of business BEFORE I get on the plane, but that doesn't preclude an urge to purge.

I feel bad for the pilots though... I've read a few posts of noxious smells wafting into the cockpit due to the close proximity of the forward lav to the cockpit. I know the damage I can do. The pilots should be able to collect hazard pay for having to deal with that!

This may have been a concern with the older recirculating (seat and bowl on the tank style) toilets, but with the vacuum toilet systems, enough air is sucked through the toilet bowl when the toilet is flushed to pull air from he cabin into the lav. If you were really worried about the next pax to use the lav, a second flush would exchange the air again.

Quoting HT (Reply 8):

Most space-deprived toilet I've used has been on the Dash 8, that's a tiny one, you have to decide if you are going to sit or stand before passing through the door, no room to turn once inside. Even the Beech 1900D has a larger lav!

While many have expressed the wonder of enjoying a full-course meal inflight (especially in the golden age of air travel), your original post makes us realize inflight 'disposal' is also an experience which is overlooked

That's one thing airplane lavatories certainly offer which public toilets in an airport do not... total privacy!! So maybe now I understand how it could be a 'sacred experience' inflight as travelavnut has pointed out.

Exactly how I've always looked at it. I guess same way I look at it when I am on an airplane, part of the cost of the ticket has paid for the facility and toilet paper to be there, so why not?

Quoting falstaff (Reply 27):

True. And when I've been in the lavs on WestJet flights, they are very clean, the toilet seats shine like a mirror. The FAs seem to keep them in good shape during the flight.

Or use the vacuum toilet on a plane and never worry about the risk of it being plugged.

I recently took an EK flight from DXB to NBO and I swear 3 or 4 people must have parked their breakfast in the lav behind my seat just during boarding. I actually think some people plan it!

I've flown on about 400 flights and aside from one curry related emergency before pushback (don't go out for an Indian a few hours earlier and ask for something extra, extra spicy ) I have never felt the need to do that. I usually opt to bake it until I reach my destination given the choice!

I wouldn't go out of my way to do it, but I would if I needed to. Actually, I find the lavatory on an airplane to be more private than those in an airport, which makes it seem like a better option to me.

This is one of those things I'd never think of until someone asked... I actually have no idea whether I do or not. I do not have a "personal policy" against it, which must mean that I have done so at some point in the past, especially on a ULH or another...

Hi All!!!

A VERY strange topic, and all I have to say is, if you gotta go, do it and get it over with. Always better n an aircraft than in those scanky airport restrooms.

Cheers!!

Same here, but if I really have to go I have no problem with places that are cleaned multiple times a day, like airport and aircraft toilets. Before I actually go I'll check if it's clean enough.

Not me. I love taking a dump at work. The way I figure it I am using their toilet paper and water so I am saving money, plus at work I'm on their time not mine...

Only once, and that was coming back from DAR (twas the curried hippo for breakfast...) but I rarely even pee on a flight, even on the long YVR - LHR. IMO, it would be better if all sat down, theres not a lot one can do to aim well sometimes with the plane bumping around while trying to support yourself from falling over against the wall with one hand and holding your fire hose in the other while trying to avoid your shoes...

I always go right before boarding and its usually first port of call from the gate upon arrival. I can drop some pretty fragrant bombs  (I know you all wanted to know that) and IMO its better to do it in an airport bog where they may be just 2-3 people around who will catch a fleeting glimpse of you as you get the hell away from the carnage never to be seen again, rather than to endure a 12 hour flight with 350 other pax looking at you each time they walk by with that sour look on their face knowing you to be the guy who poisoned the air in the crapper...

I do however feel real pity when I meet the cleaner in the bathroom and the look of anguish on their face as they realize what is facing them.

We're going off topic now, but in my office we built in a cubicle in the corner of the open plan office, so there is no privacy, all is heard - and smelt! The guys dont bother with the sound og the #1 but the girls are really conscious of it and run the taps full blast to create some noise   For a real bad one, we usually go out on an impromptu trip to Starbucks or Walmart! My boss is lactose intolerant and its a standing joke when regular vendors come that he is not there, and has gone to Walmart. However, we just discovered recently (after a complex open house) our competition across the parking lot have communal male & female washrooms. I can assure you there is not many better feelings that to take a good dump in a bitter rivals washroom - and even better Falstaff, use their towels, water and soap!

When I was in the London office, in our boys washroom we would actually have a competition to see who could do the best dump and produce the best tiger stripes. I will always remember an email sent around by the CEO advising the last person to have used the bathroom to seek medical help immediately

Anyways, back on topic....

wow! the topic is just..................... interesting. Alright, I would contribute to this important post. I have never done that on an airplane, neither as a passenger or a crew member, knock on wood, the day to have that urgency, didn''t come yet. I learned to force my self to go to the toilet at the convinience of my own bathroom. its just something i can't imagine my self doing outside of my house.

Although it rarely happens, if I have to go, I'll go. If it's a regional jet or turboprop, I'll hold it in longer if I can (never had to do that though luckily).

Hey, when you gotta go, you gotta go.

Generally, I take care of business BEFORE I get on the plane, but that doesn't preclude an urge to purge.

Same here. I always try to take care of it before boarding, but if you gotta go, you gotta go. Because if you don't go when you have to go...well, you may eventually find out that you're already gone.

When a man's gotta go, a man's gotta go....

On long haul, I find my bowels will quite often need to be exercised, airline toilets are a bit cramped, but I've been in far far worse - in India for example, a dose of Delhi Belly means your quality threshold plummets, that mossie infested septic tank is suddenly paradise!

This - actually your entire post - is hilarious!

I find that I am much more pleasant if my business is not unduly delayed, so I'll go if I have to. Can't recall it actually happening, yet.

I have no sanitary qualms whatsoever, but one thing I do agree with is the awkwardness of running into people as you are departing the restroom. It's as if you are temporarily vulnerable to association with whatever evil has befallen the space until you can get some distance from it. Like a takeoff run...you want to get the gear up and accelerate out of there!

At work it's tough when you see a guy you know and respect go into the stall and commence a legendary battle of the titans with the Porcelain God. Worse if you know that he knows that you know. Awkward as hell for everyone concerned unless there's enough other guys present for some clown to snicker or shoot you a look about it which sort of dispels the situation.

So for those reasons I might "hold it" in the air when I otherwise wouldn't. Plus the simple fact that your most protracted disposal evolutions always seem to occur when the location is not ideal.

Haven't seen this one posted yet...for some reason when I fly I CAN'T drop one through the hoop. Even a 1 hour flight binds me up for a day or two. Even long haul, its just not happening. The mind is willing but the butt is unable. Probably a good thing for anyone uses the lav after I do.
If it's new and quiet, I don't want to fly it.

I try to avoid it - but when I flew LAX-AKL I had to. The concern on that flight was that I had exit row next to the toilets, and I was a little paranoid about what the people queuing would think. Ultimately - everyone does it, so get over it

Didn't stop me from going back to sleep in my comfy exit row!
