Delta First Class SAN - CUN - Is It Worth The $$?

Wed Feb 23, 2011 6:40 am

I'm taking a vacation to Cancun in April on Delta, flying the redeye (Flt 1792) from SAN to ATL (757 with avod) and then an MD-80 to CUN. The website offers a first class ticket for $700 more round trip. Is it worth the extra money? The photos of the first class seats look surprisingly like economy seats and I don't see a lot of room between the rows. What's up with Delta's domestic first class product and is it worth the extra money to fly first on this trip??

Your expertise is - as always - much appreciated!

I went to CUN x3 this past year, and always get upgraded to FC, and I will say, it is nothing special, but since you are flying so far, I think it would be worth it, and you will get more miles. Plus you are doing a redeye, so I would probably do it.

Nowadays I think the biggest difference between coach and first on any US domestic flight (which includes Mexico, Canada and the Caribbean for this purpose) is the wider seat. Pitch is bigger, but not that much, and certainly nowhere near even business class on most international flights.

If your hips/shoulders need the extra room, go for it. If they don't, save your money, sit in the back and buy a few cocktails. You won't miss much.

2 words, HELL NO. Especially since you're silver and you might luck out anyways, there's no way it's worth $700. Well, unless you're made of money, in which case why are you going to CUN Seats are a few inches wider and 2x2, which is the biggest difference. Other than that, 3-4 inches more legroom, and maaaaaybe a meal on your first leg, seriously doubt it on the second.

Well what's the difference between the Y and F tickets? If it's a lot, then I'd say, save the money and sit in DL's Y Class, it's actually a great product. Flew JFK-ATL-CUN-ATL-EWR and had a great time, though the seats on the MD88 can be a little uncomfortable.

Well, since you have status on DL then chances are you're going to be upgraded if there's an available seat, they usually do. IDK about ATL-CUN, it's always full especially during Spring Break.

It's an international flight, so chances are they will. IIRC They even served a light dinner on the ATL-EWR flight that I took, so I guess there's no reason for them to not serve any meals on the CUN leg. (PS: They also give out complimentary headsets and blankets on the ATL-CUN leg even in Y, which is a nice touch.)

According to their website, 900 miles is the cutoff. ATL-CUN is 880.
