Lufthansa A-380 Downgraded To A-330 JFK-FRA!

Sat Feb 26, 2011 4:54 pm

Hi guys,

I am booked on LH401 New York/JFK - Frankfurt on Febuary 14th which was planned by an A-380. I especially booked this routing (Flying from Houston - Istanbul via NYC/FRA) and even do an airport change in New York just to fly the A380. Today I got an email from Expedia that the times have slighty changed and the seats were changed from Row 51 to Row 25. So I checked on Lufthansa.com my booking and it now states its an A-330. WTF. Why is Lufthansa doing that change as lots of people booked this flights as they were promoted as A-380 Flights!

I am very upset! Do I have any rights to change my travel plans?

It's already February 26th. How can you be booked on a flight on February 14th?

Certainly annoying, but it's hardly grounds to take it out on them, as it's just the way it has worked out. You book a ticket on a plane, not on a specific airplane type, so it's hardly going to be a compelling case to wave any potential fees you might incur for a change. It's unfortunate, but most conditions of purchase seem to make that fairly clear.

Sorry mean March 14th ! Sorry for confusing ! Its very annoying as they still promote this flights still on a380.lufthanss.com ! I am Star Gold (Lufthansa Senator) and did expect more from them. Sending me emails emails emails to fly this route and then they downgrade it to a boring 330 !

In the old days you might have made a reservation through a travel agent and then they could have gone to bat for you and called their rep to sort things out. I did stuff like that all the time but everybody wants computers and do it themselves because they have "control". I think people are starting to figure out who really has the control now... the big companies.

The rule of thumb was if the airline changed an itinerary and you did not like it you were entitled to a rebooking for free or a complete refund, nonrefundable or not. We took advantage of this all the time. Probably one of the reasons airlines hated us.

Anyway, give it a try. I think they will understand. Just tell them that you wanted the A380 and you would now like to cut out the JFK stop. They will be happy to streamline your trip for you. They may even need the seats out of JFK now because of the equip swap so treat it like you are doing them a favor.

You've paid an airline to bring you from A to B, and not to satisfy your needs to fly with a certain aircraft type.

You certainly always have the right to cancel your booking or try to rebook, but you have to pay the accruing charges, if this ain't booked in F or C.

Or as Coronado990 wrote. If you've booked this flight at an travel agency, they sometimes can make some calls and arre able to prevent the charges. Well, but with Expedia you're probably doomed.

If you´re Senator, it shouldnt be much of a problem to change that ticket.

Yes, im sure LH will be more than accomodating to you once you explain the situation - especially as you are a SEN.

depending on the ticket you have purchased penalties may apply, but as my previous posters said, you "only" bought transportation from A to B, but not a specific type

even a Senator has to follow the rules of a certain ticket.

if your travel plans allow you may rebook on the 11MAR which still shows an A380

Normally I would agree that passengers buy transportation from A to B, no more, especially in coach, but I would make an exception in this particular case.

I received marketing materials from LH that was clearly intended to get me to fly the A380 between JFK and FRA. If I had bitten and booked an A380 flight, I would very much expect to have the option of a refund if the aircraft I was enticed with was subbed. For all LH knows, the promise of an A380 flight got me to pass over a cheaper flight.

If airlines do not want the aircraft type to be a factor in the transaction value, then they shouldn't use the aircraft as bait. Once they do, they need to be prepared for the consequences, and they certainly cannot hide behind the "transportation from A to B" argument.

This being said, LH did announce quite some time ago that the A380 would not be flying the FRA-JFK route for the second half of March, and that it would return as 4x weekly only for a few weeks and back to daily in mid April only.

You have to deal directly with LH.

On CDG-LHR last summer and on CDG-JFK, when the scheduled A380 is replaced by another aircraft type, for whatever reason, Air France allows customers to change their reservation for another day/flight if they wish .... so I guess LH should do the same as they know that a lot of people chose this flight particularly for the A380 (check in the "trip report" section as a few A.Netters experienced the same problem last summer with AF on CDG-LHR-CDG).

Note that "legally", LH is not obliged to allow you to change your reservation. A change of aircraft type on one leg is not like a cancelled or rerouted flight. The contract you "signed" with LH when you bought the ticket is that they have to take you from IAH to IST and that's it.

I work in the air department of a tour operator and we had some passengers booked from FRA to JFK on A380 as well.
LH sent time changes and also marked a note "equipment chge to A330/A340 iso A380 FRA JFK FRA " or something.

Acutally, your travel agent (or LH themselves if you booked thru LH) was wel informed. This however gives you no right to rebook to another flight, since equipment is not part of the travel contract, although I understand this is quite sad since apparently you booked the flight especially to fly the A380.

I would recomment to call LH and explain the situation if you're willing to rebook on another date. Maybe they can rebooky you free of charge if the inventory class you have bookes is still available. If you booked through a travel agent and if they have a good contact to their LH agent service team, this could also help.

By the way, you're still lucky. Some of our guests have i.e. no seat assignments anymore, since the new airbus is showing completely full and no seats can be selected anymore.

Even worse, some guests have already now been bumped off the flight and rebook i.e. on a flight to EWR 1,5 hours later... On some dates the new equipment is appearently severely overbooked.
