Upset With Turkish Airlines (United Codeshare)

Mon Feb 28, 2011 1:59 pm

Today I was supposed to fly from Istanbul via London and Newark to Miami.
At the Check-In the Lady at the Star Gold Counter needed 35 minutes (with the help of an supervisor) to print Boarding passes (only to London) and the baggage tag (only to New York). The agents were unfriendly (and rather rude) and did not comunicate with me at all. After this they slammed the boarding pass on the counter and did not even say .. thanks for flying Turkish Airlines. Nothing.
I made my way to the Passport control, which was very full and then onto Gate 201. When I arrived at Gate 201 (12 minutes before takeoff) the flight was already closed and I was sent to the Transfer Desk, they sent me to the Ticket Desk and they did sent me to the Check-In Desk. There I was told that it was my own fault that I missed the flight and I had to contact United Airlines . United in Turkey could not help me and so I had to call the European Call Center. They need and info that the flight was due to Agent Error which TK refused to do. United booked me on the direct TK flight to Chicago but when the Info was given to United the flight was gone. So they wanted to reschudle me via London and Newark again on the later flights. United needed 30 minutes or so again to reissue Ticket and then the London Flight was closed as well.
Now finally I am booked on British Airways (not Star Alliance) to London awaiting the flight. Turkish Airlines totally lost my business and I don't understand why somebody can codeshare with them. They claimed till the very end its not their fault.

Leaving for my BA flight to London now. Update will follow!

What a mess!
There's one crucial element which you're not telling us: when you arrived at IST how much time was there before the flight was scheduled to depart?

Also, what do you mean to say in this sentence?

Quoting Delta777Jet (Thread starter):
They need and info that the flight was due to Agent Error which TK refused to do.

cheers Patrick!

You know codeshares are not quite seamless.

I had an issue not too long ago on a mixed UA/LH/LX itinerary. One leg of a connecting ZRH-LHR segment vanished totaly. My reservation had me arriving ZRH, and departing LHR, but no leg in between. In order not too loose time arguing at the ticket counter in Middle East, I boarded the flight for ZRH, and once in ZRH luckily was able to get my connecting ZRH-LHR back, but only after to speaking to both UA and LH reservations which had to push my ticket back to LX.

After I got back home, and with a little research by colleagues at the airport, it turns out that due to a previous delay in MUC a few days earlier where LH had rebooked me on another flights, the coupon segments got mixed up and the ZRH-LHR leg was erronously dropped. As the original ticket was with UA, LX had no way of seeing the missing leg until UA pushed it back to them.

So while, I don't know what TK did or did not do in your case, the mysterious world of computers and confusing ticketing procedures can throw the most experienced staff member for a loop.

Hope the rest of your trip is less stressful.

Sorry to hear of your experiences. In IST Im always there 2 and a half hours before and head to the gate 45-50 mins before the flight is due to depart. You need that to clear security at the gates. Your experience is a carbon copy of what another traveller posted on another forum a few months back. The thing is when things go wrong in IST it can often turn into chaos. I have had only good experiences but when things go wrong they go majorly wrong.

Being a Codeshare and a Star Alliance member TK staff should be well used to the different computer systems.

I agree with problems at IST and the time needed to pass through the airport. On top of the very rigorous security, I have found that there are often difficulties with the Turkish staff as well when handling other airlines. My worst experience with them was flying IST-SVO-LED in business class. Turkish handled Aeroflot and they could not figure out how to print the connecting boarding pass in SVO even though it was a simple connection. It took 10 minutes just to get a boarding pass for the SVO flight. You'd think that would be easy since they were all working the Aeroflot flight.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!
