Daytrip Weekend Getaway From Tokyo Ideas

Sun Mar 06, 2011 11:18 pm

Hello

I will be in Tokyo from next week until mid April, and I was wondering what were some good ideas for weekend getaway trip from Tokyo. Of course I would love to fly somewhere (maybe even outside Japan) or take the trains which I know are super fast and efficient in Japan.
Any ideas are welcome!

Cheers

Well there are too many places to go within Japan, but I suppose the most obvious ones would be Kyoto, Osaka, etc.

If you are keen to fly Fri night to Sun night, why not consider Seoul, Beijing, or Shanghai?

Cheers

Thanks, however I am shocked that fares are upwards of 700USD for a weekend trip! And that for a 2-3 hour flight, I mean by comparison I booked a EWR-NRT return for just under 1100USD!

Also is it normal for domestic japanese return flight to be in excess of USD500??

Cheers

Just came back from Japan a few weeks ago. It does seem to be very expensive for domestic and even short-hop flights out there. Considering you are only there for a little over a month I would recommend getting to know Japan rather than going elsewhere. That way you'll leave in April with a firm understanding of what Japan stands for.

When I was out there for our short 10 days we flew into Osaka from San Francisco, took the train to Nara, train to Kyoto, and Shinkansen (bullet train) to Tokyo. Flew home from Tokyo.

There was so much more to see, but no time. Definitely make it out to Nara, what a beautiful city - I was blown away. Osaka was cool, but just like any other big metropolis - a few sites here and there, but generally just people going about their busy lives. Kyoto has wonderful temples and sites throughout the city.

I wish I had time to go out east to Hiroshima and Nagasaki and even north to Sapporo.

Basically... you have a lot to see out there, use the time wisely (I assume you'll be working there too).

Yes, unfortunately if you do not book well in advance.

To cut fares, have a look into Skymark's fares from HND. www.skymark.co.jp/en
CTS and UKB are options, also OKA could be an option, but it is a 3-hr flight.

For JL and HN, ITM appears to be the least expensive destination even on fairly short noctice.

Surface trips.
Hakone and Mt. Fuji
Nikko

Have a look into offers by japanican.com to get impressions on what is possible from Tokyo. Depending on how accustomed you are to travelling alone in Japan, individual travel would allow for more leisurely pacing.
Another good source of information and travel tips is japan-guide.com

Abroad:
DL flies from NRT to GUM, as does Air Mike (CO).
UA and DL fly to ICN.

Vielen Dank!

I will definitely take all things into account.
I actually have a friend who lives in Okinawa (Naha), so I will definitely will be heading there some time, despite the high ticket prices!

I will shortly post onto the A.net meeting forum, likelihood though that I could only make it on Sunday, as I have a previous engagement on Saturday.

Cheers,

For TYO - OKA you appear to be limited to Skymark, JAL and ANA.
While Skymark should be least expensive, getting a better seat for this 3-hr flight on JAL could be an option. Fares on their domestic Business Class often is only marginally more expensive than standard Eco.

See you during the meeting either somewhere downtown on Saturday evening or on Sunday at HND.

Go to Chofu Airport, on the outskirts of Tokyo, and fly the Dornier 228 of NCA to some of the islands in Tokyo Bay. That´s a nice flying adventure and not soo expensive, around 120 EUR return I think. They fly several times a day, most flights go to Oshima.
