Best Seat Choice On LH 744 In Y?

Mon Mar 07, 2011 4:05 pm

When travelling in Y-class on LH744, what is the best seat choice, knowing that the exits can't be booked in advance.

I am travelling alone, and opted for now for seat 54A, the first row where config is 2-4-2. Is this a good choice, or would you advise not to do so?

Have you checked seatguru yet?
In this case, it would be a good idea, since there are three configurations listed for LH's B747 fleet. Seat 54A is reported to be a good seat in one of the configurations, however, there are some drawbacks in the two remaining ones. So it would be useful to to find out what subtype is going to operate your flight, so that you can eventually make a good seat assignment.

Thanks Luftfahrer.

I did the check. In my booking, economy starts at row 32, so the config which indicates 54A as good seat.
Although, just wanted to hear some opinions of people who have experience with it.

The seat is good if you are traveling as a couple. Keep in mind that with the A-seat you can't lean against the wall. There is actually quite a big gap between the seat and the wall/window. Furthermore you're close to the galley. There is no wall behind the last row, therefore you hear everything from the galley...If you travel alone you may prefer a regular aisle seat.

I am travelling alone, but want a window seat. So question is: would you prefer a window seat more in front, with 2 people between you and the aisle, or the few pairs of 2 seats?
by the way, it's a day flight, no overnight (though lasting 11.50hrs, FRA-MEX).

Don't sit too far in at the front, then you have the wing right underneath you and you don't see a lot then.
I don't know which version you get to MEX, but last time I flew to MEX it was with the smaller Y class (234 seats).
I don't know about the seats in Y class. But try to sit on the left side, then you have a nice view over the city during approach. Once you land there, the sun will set (well, depends when you are flying...) In summer it is still sunlight out there.

I don't see why the last three rows should differ within the three configs LH as on the 744.
Flying three times in one of these seats (always window) I definitely recommend them. There is more space next to you and less people in one row.
Distance to the galley is for all three versions the same, thus the comments on seatguru are not very consistent.

Flying to MEX you might be lucky and get on the one (and only) of LH's 744 with PTV (D-ABVK), even thought the plane has not been there lately:

Well, that's what seatguru said... in one configuration, this particular seat is marked green, in the two other ones, yellow. Upon closer inspection, you seem to be correct, though - there doesn't seem to be too much of difference, if any.

The galley is at Door 4, so row 54 is about as far away as you can get from it in Y-CL. Closer to the lavatories, which can get a bit noisy, when people queue in front or have their little private party in front of the door 5s, drinking and chatting. But generally, I would recommend 54 or 55, too. 54 with a window seat is probably a good bet.

I took the last row on my last BA 747 flight because I dread having two people sit next to me on a long haul flight, although the window is a few inches away from you, you still get a great view, just a bit harder to lean up your head against for a snooze. The seat doesn't recline all the way back but you can stretch your legs a bit in the gap between the seat infront of you and the wall. As far as I'm concerned, this is by far my first choice in seats on a 747 Y class.
