Most Legs / Distance With A Single Flight Number?

Fri Mar 11, 2011 1:46 pm

WN 1655 looks like a good contender in terms on number of stops

HOU-MSY-BWI-ISP-MDW-DEN-SAN-OAK

What about distance - looks to something like NZ 0001 - LHR-LAX-AKL

WN definitely seems to be the expert on taking one flight number and crisscrossing the country 26 times with it.

Can one really book that one all the way from HOU to OAK with all those stops?

From my understanding, it would require actually calling Southwest and having them book it, because the website won't let you book something like that - it would just route you HOU-OAK nonstop or via 1 or 2 stops.

It's good that WN doesn't charge per leg baggage fees !!!

I don't remember the exact routing. But I was once one WestJet flight from YVC to YYC and it will continue with a couple stops all the way to St. Johns. But don't know how many stops anymore. Too long ago.

Wideroe have some similarly long routes with multiple stops, maybe even more than Southwest.

Yeah, I know I looked it up. Wonder though what they would charge for that route. Might even call them to ask.

Most legs for a single flight - historical:
Braniff schedule for September 16, 1946 shows the follow single flight operated by a DC-3:
Braniff flight 53 routing:
Chicago > Moline > Burlington > Kansas City > Topeka > Wichita > Ponca City > Oklahoma City > Dallas > Fort Worth > Waco > Austin > San Antonio > Laredo

Lunch was served on the Topeka to Kansas City leg. A snack was served Waco to Austin.
The scheduled ground times were 5 minutes, except for Dallas which had 13 minutes.
The flight left Chicago at 8:50 am and arrived Laredo at 9:08 pm.

Since my first post got all weirded out....

AC33 YYZ-YVR-SYD (or AC34 SYD-YVR-YYZ). At 8552NM it doesn't beat NZ1, but it sure is up there!

Canadian regional carrier Air Inuit has some Dash 8 flights with as many as 6 stops between Montreal and remote communities in northern Quebec. One has an elapsed time between YUL and the last stop of over 10 hours.

KE061 ICN-LAX-GRU is at 19554km, which is 306km longer than NZ's AKL-LAX-LHR.

IIRC correctly UTA used to operate a service from CDG to LAX the long way around , didn't they ? Something along the lines of CDG-BAH-SIN-JKT-SYD-NOU-AKL-PPT-LAX ( I think that CMB also figured in the route at one time ? or did they break it up into separate flight numbers ?

Thanks for that , I didn't realise that it had a single flight number all the way from CDG - I wonder if anyone ever does the flight right through from beginning to end ... there are easier ways to get from CDG to NOU ( though not with the same aircraft/flight number all the way )

Yes. It looks like CDG-NRT/KIX-NOU on AF/Air Calin would be a quicker routing (though less interesting). It would be fascinating to find out what percentage of the CDG-RUN passengers on Air Austral continue onto SYD or NOU. In the unlikely event that the vast majority continue to NOU, it would seem that Air Austral could do CDG-RUN-NOU since the RUN-NOU distance is just over 6000nm and they use the 777-300ER for this route. But, SYD is probably essential for the route's success.

I think the flight number changed at least once (maybe twice).

I would agree, however no one has posted one yet....
