DL Platinum-No Upgrades?

Tue Mar 15, 2011 2:16 am

I have been Platinum on Delta for 10+ years. Last year and every other year I was getting upgrades from SAN/LAX to ATL 90% of the time. This year I have flown SAN-ATL 8 times without being upgraded once and I'm not in the lowest fares. Flew last week in M and still no upgrade. Any other Platinum's having similar troubles?

Paid F has been on a steady rise. Hence the reason why DL is ADDING F seats to the fleet. The 757s will go up to 28 from 24 and 26, the 76Qs are going to 30 from 24.

I've noticed the longer flights has an upgrade list a mile long. The problem for you guys is the Diamond's upgrade window is much wider so they may get their seat 3 days out where many others have to wait till day of departure. To answer your question, yes, PMs are still eligible for complimentary domestic upgrades but it's just harder becasue more folks are buying seats plus all the DMs and PMs that may be on a higher fare.

I understand what your saying. But wasn't there Diamond stauts last year? I can see a few extra seats being sold in F, but I have went from almost 100% upgrade to being 6-10 people down on the upgrade list. I am also Platinum on CO and they have still been easy to upgrade with. Might be the end of DL for me, as I don't fly enough to get 125K on DL and 75K on CO/UA.Will just have to go Star Alliance full time.

I'm Platinum on CO and am having the same experience as you are with DL... since the merger, no upgrades, even with using miles to upgrade and being put on upgrade standby weeks out. Pre-merger was a different story. Doesn't help I primarily fly between hubs now though (EWR/SFO/ORD).

Maybe it's just me, but... if you want F, wouldn't it just be easier to buy an F ticket...??

Purchasing F for company business travel is prohibited (unless there is absolutely no alternative) at most companies.

I can see Transpac's point. If you really want F, buy a ticket like the others that are doing so, causing upgrades for top Elites to be ever so hard. I understand "company rules" so really it's not their money. Rack up the miles on your employer's dime (nothing wrong with that; mile redemption is also perfectly legal for military personnel on paid tickets) get the upgrades when you can but use the miles for what they are intended for; to get free tickets.

Well, you're not the top tier status, so why does that seem strange??

Different routes have a different number of seats available, depending on tickets sold for F/C and number of FF's wanting those leftover seats.

Even if you were Diamond you might have the same problem ... no guarantees.

If there are 10 Diamonds and 20 Platinums, all going for 16 seats ...well, someone's gonna be disappointed!

Not only that, most airlines are offering confirmed upgrades for a small cost these days. For the fraction of the price of a full fare F-class ticket, you can confirm your upgrade to F.

I've never much understood the whole rationale of being offered something for free on an "as available" basis then getting upset when it's not available 24/7.

It's also annoying for those of us who work for airlines who do not do this upgrading-for-free business. Last week someone asked me for a free upgrade and when I said we do not offer those, he went on a tirade stating how UA does that fr him and we should be able to as well because of his elite status. Unfortunately for him, he was not flying United (or a Star Alliance carrier for that matter) on this particular occasion....

Nor was he flying on a domestic route.

I get that a lot too, elites asking for upgrades by virtue of simply being elite with any airline.

The LAX market is always full up front for the most part. We do very few upgrades on DTW-LAX, and they usually are DM's or a select few PM's if we do. With M class, you should be at the top of the PM list... the second highest priority.

The priority is as follows:

Diamond, Platinum, Gold, Silver, DL Companion (put in order of the Medallion member's status), Air France/KLM Flying Blue Elite, Alaska Air MVP. Companions, Air France/KLM, and Alaska are pretty much grouped together in one priority though. If you have a full-fare ticket, you may be able to bump ahead of a Diamond. The system is really weird. I've seen full fare Silver's jump ahead of everyone... so a lot is possible.

Oh, and there is DL inconvenienced too. They jump ahead of everyone, which I think is bull. Maybe jump them up one priority, but not to the top just because they were inconvenienced.

I would be pretty pissed off if I was involuntarily (or voluntarily) denied boarding and was rebooked on the following flight...but Y was full with plenty of F seats open. That pax should get first priority of the F seat. But that's just my opinion (Seems DL sort of shares the same). BTW, are you talking about B1s here or HKs?

How? Buying K+ fare and using 12.5K miles each way? It is cheaper than buying F but still too expensive for most people.

I fail to see why one can't complain when his upgrade success rate drops from 90% to 0%. And in the same sense, nobody should ever complain about DL's infamous award calendar and award availability -- nobody is entitled to low level award. Wanna fly delta in F? Buy F or use 300,000 miles.

No, HK's. B1's are on the "revenue" standby list, which excludes them from upgrades. HK's with an "UP2" status are the highest upgrade priority and have been inconvenienced in some way. It's mostly for misconnecting passengers. It shouldn't be done automatically in my opinion... should be more of a discretionary move.

flying out of EWR on CO I'm surprised you got any upgrades even PRE-MERGER!

Considering it was something that was NEVER guaranteed, you have only yourself to blame if you had come to expect it and feel entitled to it.

If DL is selling enough full-fare F seats or confirmed upgrades, that is excellent for them and is exactly why they are in business - to make money. Not to give away free seats.

Revenue management does take into account the upgrade factor in inventory allocation.

Per a speech from Richard yesterday to a select group of customers, Diamond/Plats/Golds spend far substantially more than what Paid F makes in the system.

That's surprising, i'm silver and fly SAN-ATL all the time and i'm always 1 or 2 away from an upgrade, but I usually travel on random days of the week. but the 767s with the extra first class seats are already slotted for this summer on SAN-ATL-SAN
