Do You Buy Duty Free On Board?

Thu Mar 17, 2011 2:55 am

This is a simple poll. Do any of you buy duty free on board, and if so, do you do it on a regular basis and what do you buy?

I buy stuff more often than not. Generally I buy cosmetics for my wife when I forget to pick them up at the airport. I have also bought two watches, a Kenneth Cole and a Hugo Boss (funny enough, at least 10 of my colleagues have both watches as well, bought on SQ and QF). I have bought a world electrical outlet adaptor too. And once I had to buy a box of chocolates on Air China as I was starving and they had no extra snacks on a +11 hour flight from PVG to MEL.

Cheers

I have only purchased model aircraft on-board (don't know if that counts for this). On-board an OS flight from VIE-ORD I got two metal models of the OS 777 and OS 320. Then on a flight from LGW-YYZ I bought a snap together Thomas Cook A330.

Only time I buy duty-free onboard is on AC because I can "pre-order" it. AC lets passengers order their duty-free up to 96 hours before departure and receive it, bagged and already paid, in flight. And it comes with a 15% discount...
What I buy? Booze. Bombay, XO, Patron,...

Does any other airline have a similar option?

I never buy duty free liquor because I usually have an additional domestic flight after my international flight. This requires that I place the liquor bottle ( > 3 ounces) into my checked bag after clearing customs and before re-checking my luggage for my domestic flight. The risk of breakage/leakage in my luggage is not worth saving a few bucks.

I don't fly too much internationally anymore. However, when i do, I usually take advantage of the duty free (mostly booze). I bought a bottle of scotch aboard of LH471 on my way to VIE 2 years ago. I had to do that (as opposed of buying it at YYZ), since the duty free shop at YYZ didn't offer a sealed package that would be allowed past security in FRA.
This year I'll have to find out how much is LX charging for booze and decide what to do.

I don't buy myself. But I have seen empirical evidence of my parents, uncles and parents of friends (who are seniors also) buy duty free a bit. What I've seen in common among those folks I know is they tend not to go to stores as much, and so the in-flight duty free is one of their few "shopping experiences". Which means they don't know enough to realize that the prices or products offered on board are not so great. They're also still used to buying from mail-order catalogs (a similar format to inflight dufry) in this day and age of online shopping.

I rarely buy on board unless its a really good deal. I mostly buy model aircraft. The last one was onboard MEA a A330 model which is the best so far for only $30 .

Alot of aftershave is the same price in stores or online these days so unless its saving me at least $20 I cant be bothered to carry it around.
